Campgrounds near Polkton, North Carolina
Polkton sits in Anson County in the southern Piedmont of North Carolina, roughly an hour east of Charlotte and close to the South Carolina line. The town itself is small, so most RV travelers use it as a launch point for the Uwharrie Lakes Region to the north and the Sandhills of the Carolinas to the south. Campground choices span private RV parks, North Carolina state park campgrounds, and South Carolina state park facilities within an easy drive.
To the north, Norwood Campground sits near the Uwharrie Mountains with access to Lake Tillery, while Morrow Mountain State Park offers a mix of primitive, electric, and cabin options across three loops in rolling Piedmont terrain. Cotton Patch RV Campground near New London provides a smaller, quieter option close to Badin Lake.
South of Polkton, across the state line near Cheraw, South Carolina, Cheraw State Park is part of one of South Carolina's oldest state park systems, and its campground features 17 sites with individual water and electric hookups. Just next door, H Cooper Black Jr Memorial Recreational Area caters to equestrian campers and dog-training events.
Things to do near Polkton
Water is a major draw north of town. Lake Tillery is fed by the Pee Dee and Uwharrie Rivers and holds bluegill, channel catfish, flathead catfish, white bass, striped bass, largemouth bass, crappie, and yellow perch. Boat ramps, rental canoes, and shoreline fishing are available at Morrow Mountain State Park, which also offers hiking, horseback riding, and a seasonal swimming pool built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.
On land, the surrounding Uwharrie National Forest supports mountain biking, OHV trails, hunting, and horse riding. Town Creek Indian Mound, a state historic site, sits within easy reach and works well as a rain-day stop for families.
For riders and dog-sport enthusiasts heading south, H Cooper Black Jr Memorial Recreational Area covers thousands of acres of longleaf pine forest and hosts field trial and retriever competitions, with miles of trails and sand roads for horseback riding.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV camping around Polkton. Daytime highs are mild, insects are lighter than in midsummer, and the surrounding forests carry either wildflowers or hardwood color. Morrow Mountain State Park stays open year round, so shoulder-season trips are practical for campers who want cooler nights and easier reservations.
Summers run hot and humid. Most events at H Cooper Black Jr Memorial Recreational Area run in the spring and fall because midsummer heat limits equestrian and dog-training activity. Expect afternoon thunderstorms, and plan water activities for morning hours. Reservation demand at private parks like Norwood Campground peaks from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when pool access and organized weekends draw families.
Winter is quieter but still viable. Cheraw State Park stays open year-round for camping, with park gates open 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily from November through February. Snow is uncommon in the region, though overnight freezes occur, so RV renters should confirm winterization needs with their rental provider.
How to book campgrounds near Polkton
North Carolina state park sites, including Morrow Mountain, are booked through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance. Holiday weekends carry a two-night minimum on Friday/Saturday or Saturday/Sunday, applying to Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends.
South Carolina state parks use a separate system. Reservations may be made up to 13 months in advance, and requests less than one day before check-in must be made directly through the park. Check-in is 2:00 p.m. and check-out is 12:00 p.m. Camping reservations at Cheraw State Park require a minimum of two nights.
Private parks such as Norwood Campground and Cotton Patch RV Campground take bookings directly through their own sites or partner platforms, and lakefront or full-hookup sites tend to sell out first for summer weekends.
What to expect
The terrain around Polkton is rolling Piedmont farmland transitioning into pine and hardwood forest. Sites at state parks tend to be shaded and reasonably private. Morrow Mountain's campground spreads across three loops with paved roads and sites ranging from primitive to electric hookup, and the wooded setting provides ample shade and spacing between most sites. Some sites present leveling challenges due to slope, so bring blocks.
At Cheraw State Park, pull-through sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, back-in sites up to 34 feet, and six sites sit directly on Lake Juniper. Cell coverage in the Sandhills and Uwharrie areas can be spotty, and grocery runs generally mean driving to Albemarle, Wadesboro, or Cheraw.
Wildlife includes deer, turkeys, and waterfowl. Firewood restrictions apply in South Carolina: all firewood brought into South Carolina State Parks must be from within the state and from less than 50 miles away.
