Campgrounds and RV parks near Richlands, NC

Water is the main draw. The White Oak and New Rivers, Bogue Sound, and the Intracoastal Waterway offer kayaking, fishing, and boat access, and the lakes at The Lakes RV & Cabin Resort are set up for swimming, fishing, and boating. Beach days at Emerald Isle, Topsail Island, and North Topsail Beach are all under an hour from most campgrounds. For hiking and wildlife, the Croatan National Forest has several trails, including the Neusiok Trail and the Tideland Trail at Cedar Point, a short loop through coastal marshlands. Families can add day trips to Hammocks Beach State Park, where a seasonal passenger ferry runs to Bear Island, plus historic New Bern to the north and downtown Wilmington to the south.

Camping runs year-round in this part of coastal North Carolina, but each season brings tradeoffs. Spring (March through May) and fall (September through November) offer the most comfortable temperatures for RV travel, with mild days, lower humidity, and easier campground availability outside holiday weekends. Summer is peak season. Days are hot and humid, afternoon thunderstorms are common, and both private RV parks and public campgrounds fill quickly around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day. It is also Atlantic hurricane season, which runs June through November and peaks in late summer, so travelers should watch forecasts and confirm park status after named storms. Winter stays mild by regional standards, and most private RV parks near the coast remain open. At Hammocks Beach State Park, the Simmons Mainland Campground operates year-round, while access to Bear Island depends on the seasonal ferry and weather, and campers should confirm current facility status with the park before arriving.

Terrain around Richlands is flat and sandy, sitting on the coastal plain, which makes for easy RV leveling at most sites. Expect a mix of shaded, wooded inland campgrounds and more open waterfront parks closer to the sound and Intracoastal Waterway. Cell service is generally good near town and along US 17 and NC 24, but can weaken inside the Croatan National Forest. Bring insect repellent from late spring through fall, since mosquitoes and biting flies are active near marshes and pine flats. At Hammocks Beach State Park, during sea turtle nesting season from approximately May through October, white lights are prohibited on the Bear Island beachfront at night and only red-lens lights are allowed. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is nearby, so occasional aircraft and training noise is normal in the area.
