Campgrounds and RV parks near Rocky Point, NC

The Wilmington Riverwalk along the Cape Fear River offers a walkable stretch of restaurants, shops, and access to the Battleship North Carolina, a World War II museum ship moored across the river. Airlie Gardens and Greenfield Lake Park add easy half-day options for families, and Poplar Grove Plantation in nearby Scotts Hill covers regional history from the 1800s. Carolina Beach State Park, about 30 miles south, is known for its trails through longleaf pine and one of the only native habitats on Earth for the Venus flytrap and other carnivorous plants. The park also operates the only state-managed marina in North Carolina, with boat access to the Cape Fear River and Intracoastal Waterway. Beach days are straightforward from Rocky Point: Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, and the Topsail Island communities are all within roughly a 30 to 40 minute drive.

Rocky Point has a humid subtropical climate with hot, humid summers and short, mild winters. Summer highs run into the upper 80s and low 90s Fahrenheit, and afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August. Late summer is typically the wettest stretch, and annual rainfall at the Wilmington station now exceeds 60 inches under the 1991 to 2020 normals. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, humidity drops, and sea breezes moderate afternoons along the coast. These shoulder seasons also tend to have better campsite availability than the June through August peak, when school-break demand pushes both private parks and Carolina Beach State Park toward full occupancy on weekends. Winter is quiet and usable for RVers who tolerate cooler nights. Sub-freezing lows occur periodically from December through February, but sustained hard freezes are rare, snowfall averages under an inch per year, and most private campgrounds stay open year-round. Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with peak activity in September, so travelers should monitor National Hurricane Center advisories when booking late-summer and early-fall trips.

Expect flat coastal-plain terrain, sandy soils, and a mix of pine woods and farmland around Rocky Point. Roads to the private campgrounds are generally easy for larger rigs, and Wilmington KOA Holiday offers level full-hookup sites suited to first-time RV travelers. Lake Leamon Campground provides RV sites with full hookups on a small private lake, along with a bathhouse and laundry, though facilities are functional rather than resort-style. Summer brings heat, humidity, and mosquitoes, particularly at wooded sites near water, so bring repellent and plan outdoor activity for mornings and evenings. Carolina Beach State Park closes and locks its front gate at posted closing times, so late arrivals should plan around that. Cell coverage is generally reliable across Pender and New Hanover counties, groceries and fuel are easy to reach along US 17 and I-40, and Wilmington International Airport is about 20 minutes from Rocky Point for travelers flying in.
