Campgrounds and RV parks near Rougemont, NC

Falls Lake anchors most trip plans. Kayaking and canoeing are popular, with some campsites allowing direct water access for launching. A designated swimming beach with a marked-off safe area is good for families. Fishing is available from both the shoreline and small boats, particularly around the coves. Hiking trails wind through the area, including a shaded path to the boat launch. Hikers and cyclists can also head to William B Umstead State Park. There are 22 miles of hiking trails, and six of the fifteen hiking trails are multiuse trails where both horseback riding and biking are allowed. Rowboats and canoes can be rented at the boathouse on Big Lake, with rentals available daily throughout the summer and on weekends during spring and fall.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in this part of the Piedmont, with mild days and lower humidity. Summer brings heat, humidity, and afternoon thunderstorms, and the water at Falls Lake becomes the main draw. Winter is cool but generally mild, with occasional light snow. Operating seasons vary by park. At William B. Umstead State Park, the tent and trailer campground is open from April 1 through October 31. Falls Lake campgrounds run longer, but ongoing infrastructure work has affected several areas. Falls Lake SRA is currently in the construction phase of a project to upgrade wastewater systems. During construction some bathrooms, facilities, and camping areas will be closed. Currently construction is progressing in Beaverdam and Holly Point Recreation Areas. Other facilities are operating under their normal schedule. Holiday weekends carry extra rules. A two-night minimum stay applies on Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day holiday weekends. Peak summer weekends at the lake fill quickly, so booking as early as the window allows is strongly advised for June through August.
