Campgrounds and RV parks near Scotch Meadows, NC

Water and forest are the main draws. At Cheraw State Park, campers can fish and paddle on Lake Juniper, walk the lakeside boardwalk, and explore trails through cypress wetlands. The park offers an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Tom Jackson, extensive hiking and equestrian trails, kayak and canoe rentals, fishing from a lakeside boardwalk, and opportunities to explore the surrounding cypress wetlands. Closer to Scotch Meadows, small lakes at Bass Lake RV Campground and Bass Lake Campground give kids somewhere to fish and cool off after a travel day. Farm-based stays such as Idlewild Farm Stays suit families wanting animals, open space, and a slower pace. Day trips stretch the itinerary: historic downtown Cheraw, the Carolina Sandhills National Wildlife Refuge, and Lumber River paddling are all within about an hour.

The Sandhills climate is humid subtropical, with a long usable RV season. In Laurinburg, the summers are hot and muggy, the winters are short and cold, and it is wet and partly cloudy year round. Over the course of the year, the temperature typically varies from 34°F to 90°F and is rarely below 22°F or above 97°F. Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for camping. Summer brings the biggest crowds and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The wettest month is usually September, coinciding with peak Atlantic hurricane season, so travelers watching tropical systems should stay flexible on inland detours. Fall cools quickly after early October and delivers drier, clearer days useful for hiking and fishing. Winter camping is realistic here. Nights drop near freezing but daytime highs are mild, and private parks generally stay open year round. Cheraw State Park is open year-round for camping. Park gates open 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily from November through February.

Sites in this area are mostly level and gravel or grass, with easy access for larger rigs. At Cheraw State Park, each campsite is packed gravel and has individual water and electrical hookups. The pull-through sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, others up to 34 feet. The campground is convenient to restrooms with hot showers. Sites 4 and 5 offer full hookups including sewer. A dump station is available for RVs. Cell coverage is generally good along the I-95 corridor. Expect some highway noise at interstate-adjacent parks and quieter conditions at farm stays and state park sites. Bring bug spray from late spring through early fall, plan for afternoon storms in summer, and pack layers for winter nights that can dip below freezing.
