Campgrounds near Southport, NC
Southport sits at the mouth of the Cape Fear River on North Carolina's southern coast, within easy reach of Oak Island, Bald Head Island, and the beaches of Brunswick County. RV travelers use it as a base for barrier-island days, ferry rides, and fishing on the Intracoastal Waterway. Wilmington and its airport are roughly a forty-five minute drive north.
Campgrounds cluster on the beaches and back roads around town rather than in downtown Southport itself. Oak Island Campground sits closest to the surf on Oak Island, while Winner's RV Park and Snow's Cut RV Retreat serve travelers heading toward Carolina Beach and Fort Fisher. Holden Beach RV Campground and Sea Mist give access to the quieter beaches west of the Cape Fear.
Most parks in this area are privately owned and offer full hookups suited to travel trailers, fifth wheels, and Class A rigs. State-park camping is limited on this stretch of coast, so private grounds handle most of the demand during beach season.
Things to do around Southport
The Southport-Fort Fisher ferry crosses the Cape Fear River several times daily and connects the city to Kure Beach, Fort Fisher State Recreation Area, and the North Carolina Aquarium. Bald Head Island is reachable only by passenger ferry from Deep Point Marina, with golf carts as the main transport once ashore.
Oak Island offers open Atlantic beaches, a public fishing pier, and the Oak Island Lighthouse. Anglers work the surf, the piers, and charter boats out of Southport's small-boat harbor. Kayakers paddle the salt marshes and blackwater creeks feeding the river.
In town, the waterfront district holds the North Carolina Maritime Museum at Southport, historic homes, and small shops along Howe and Moore Streets. Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site preserves colonial and Civil War ruins a short drive north.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when beach traffic, humidity, and campground demand all peak together. Oceanfront and near-beach sites at parks like Oak Island Campground and Holden Beach RV Campground often book out weeks in advance for summer weekends and holidays. Weekday stays are easier to secure.
Spring and fall are the most comfortable stretches for RV travel. March through May brings mild days, lower humidity, and blooming azaleas, while September through November delivers warm ocean temperatures with thinning crowds after Labor Day. Atlantic hurricane season officially runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in late August and September; travelers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories and confirm evacuation policies with the campground.
Winters are mild but wet and windy. Some smaller private parks reduce hours or amenities from December through February, though several coastal campgrounds stay open year round for snowbird traffic moving between the Northeast and Florida.

Booking and reservations
Private campgrounds near Southport take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and most require a deposit at booking. Summer weekends, the July 4 holiday, and fall shoulder-season fishing tournaments are the hardest windows to secure, so booking two to three months out is reasonable for those dates.
North Carolina State Parks, including Carolina Beach State Park north of the river, take reservations through the state parks ReserveAmerica portal, with a rolling window that lets campers book up to six months ahead of arrival. Fort Fisher State Recreation Area allows limited beach driving and day use but does not offer traditional RV camping.
Check length, slide, and hookup limits before booking, since older beach-area parks may have tight interior roads and 30-amp-only sites. Pet policies, age restrictions on rigs, and minimum-stay rules vary by park.
What to expect on the ground
Coastal Brunswick County terrain is flat, sandy, and heavily wooded with live oak and loblolly pine. Sites at beach-area parks tend to be closer together than inland grounds, and shade varies from full canopy to open sun on the barrier islands. Bring leveling blocks; some sandy pads settle.
Biting insects are active from late spring through early fall, especially mosquitoes and no-see-ums in the marshes at dawn and dusk. Salt air is hard on chrome and exposed metal, so a rinse-down after a beach-week stay is worthwhile.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across Southport, Oak Island, and Holden Beach, though it can drop in the marshes and on Bald Head Island. Grocery, propane, and RV supply runs are easiest in Southport itself or in nearby Leland and Wilmington.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Southport, NC
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Southport, NC?
RV rental in Southport is an affordable alternative to coastal hotels, especially when you split costs with family or friends. On RVezy you can expect roughly $90 to $175 per night for travel trailers, $150 to $250 for Class C motorhomes, and $200 to $350 for larger Class A coaches, with hosts setting their own nightly rates and mileage allowances. For a cheap RV rental Southport travelers love, book a travel trailer with delivery so you can skip towing fees entirely. Pro tip: shoulder months like late April, May, and October bring mild days, fewer crowds, and the lowest rates of the year.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Southport%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Southport?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Southport, with no commercial or special endorsement required in North Carolina, even for larger Class A motorhomes. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens securely through the booking platform in just a few minutes. Visiting from overseas? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) issued in your home country before you fly in. Most first time renters are pleasantly surprised at how simple the process is, you can often be approved and booked the same afternoon.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Southport RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy comes with a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the Cape Fear coast knowing you're covered. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your trip, and at checkout you choose the coverage level that fits your comfort, from a basic option to premium plans with lower deductibles. This isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides real peace of mind whether you're parked at Carolina Beach State Park or driving NC 211 into Southport. Pick your protection level at booking and you're set, with no extra phone calls or separate policies to chase down.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Southport RV trip?
Booking your Southport RV trip is low risk thanks to RVezy's standardized cancellation policy, which includes a money back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip you are at the time of cancellation. Because RVezy (not the host) manages cancellations, the process is consistent across every listing you browse, and if a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides travel credit. Pro tip: book early for July 4th fireworks over the Cape Fear River and the NC 4th of July Festival in Southport, both fill up fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Southport RV rental?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Southport options are plentiful on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see listings whose hosts welcome dogs. Southport is a great dog town: the Waterfront Park and Riverwalk are leash friendly, and Oak Island allows leashed dogs on the beach year round with seasonal time restrictions in summer. Most local RV parks allow leashed pets with proof of rabies vaccination, so confirm pet rules with both your host and your chosen campground. Pack a towel for sandy paws after Caswell Beach walks, and your pup will probably enjoy this trip even more than you do.
oakislandnc.gov/279/Beach-Strand-RulesCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Southport?
Yes, RV delivery Southport is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you've never towed before. Many RVezy hosts will drop the RV directly at your chosen campground, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter by Delivery on the search page to see hosts who offer it, with delivery fees typically based on mileage from their location. This is ideal for first timers, families flying into Wilmington International Airport (ILM), and anyone who'd rather skip driving a 30 foot rig into a beach town for the first time.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Southport%2C%20North%20CarolinaHow far can I drive on a Southport RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You'll find plenty of flexibility, with some Southport hosts offering RV rental with unlimited mileage and others including a generous daily allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day) plus a small per mile fee beyond that. From Southport you're well positioned for short hops and longer adventures: Wilmington is about 30 miles north, Myrtle Beach roughly 50 miles south, the Outer Banks around 230 miles northeast, and Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway about 320 miles west. Check each listing's mileage policy before booking, and if you're planning a bigger loop, message the host directly to ask about a custom mileage package.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Southport%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhere are the best campgrounds near Southport for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Southport. Popular options include Oak Island Campground on Long Beach Road (just a few miles from downtown Southport and a short walk to the beach), Wildlife Woods Campground in Bolivia, and Holden Beach RV Park nearby in Supply. About 45 minutes north, Carolina Beach State Park offers marina access, hiking, and 50 amp sites managed by NC State Parks. For something farther afield, Sun Outdoors Sunset Beach delivers a full resort vibe. Pro tip: Carolina Beach State Park books up months ahead for summer weekends, so reserve as soon as your dates lock in.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/carolina-beach-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Southport, NC?
Southport is one of the few coastal towns where you can comfortably RV almost year round. Late April through early June is the sweet spot, with highs in the low 70s to mid 80s, lower humidity, and far fewer crowds than peak summer. July and August bring tropical heat (highs near 88 F, heat index often over 100 F) plus the most rain, though ocean swims and Bald Head Island ferry rides make it worth it. September and October are local favorites with warm water and dry days. Winters are mild (highs in the mid 50s, lows around 40 F), so a Southport RV trip in February is genuinely pleasant.
weather.gov/ilm/climateI've never driven an RV before. Is renting in Southport a good idea for first timers?
Southport is one of the friendliest places in the country for first time renting an RV. The town is small, traffic is mellow outside of summer Saturdays, and most campgrounds are within a 20 minute drive of downtown. Your RVezy host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering leveling, slide outs, water systems and propane, and you can text them any time during your trip. If towing a travel trailer feels intimidating, choose a Class C motorhome or book a delivery-only host who brings the RV to your site. By night one you'll be grilling shrimp at the campground like you've done it for years.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you have a flat tire on NC 211, run into battery trouble at Holden Beach, or need a tow back to Southport, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is also a direct text away for questions like how to reset the inverter or free up a stuck awning, and RVezy's customer support team is reachable before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: snap a quick photo of the RV's VIN and the propane tank location during your walkthrough, it speeds up any roadside call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip routes from Southport?
An RV road trip from Southport opens up some of the East Coast's best coastal driving. Popular routes include the 30 mile cruise up US 17 to historic downtown Wilmington and the USS North Carolina Battleship, a 50 mile run south to Myrtle Beach for boardwalk fun, a short hop to Wrightsville Beach for surfing, a 230 mile drive northeast to the Outer Banks for Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, and a longer 320 mile westward push to Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway. Cross border travel into South Carolina is allowed and easy, just confirm with your host. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance coverage limits.
ncdot.gov/travel-maps/Pages/default.aspxWhat fuel costs should I budget for a Southport RV trip?
Fuel is usually the second biggest line item after the rental itself, but it's easy to budget. Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon, travel trailers tow at 10 to 14 MPG depending on your tow vehicle, and campervans can hit 18 to 22 MPG. North Carolina gas prices tend to run near or slightly below the national average, and you'll find affordable stations on Howe Street in Southport and along NC 211 toward Supply. For a typical 7 day loop covering 400 to 600 miles, budget around $180 to $350 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Bolivia or Supply rather than on Oak Island for a few cents savings per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Southport?
For peak summer weekends (Memorial Day through Labor Day) and the NC 4th of July Festival in Southport, book your campsite 4 to 6 months ahead, the Cape Fear coast fills up fast. Carolina Beach State Park, run by NC State Parks, opens reservations well in advance through its online system and books out quickly for July weekends. Private parks like Oak Island Campground and Holden Beach RV Park typically open booking windows farther out. For spring and fall trips, 4 to 6 weeks is usually plenty. Pro tip: pair an RVezy delivery host with a state park site you've already reserved, that's the locals' move.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/carolina-beach-state-parkWhat are driving conditions like around Southport?
Driving an RV around Southport is refreshingly stress free compared to most coastal destinations. Roads are flat, well maintained, and traffic stays light outside of summer Saturdays when beachgoers stream onto Oak Island via the G.V. Barbee Sr. Bridge. The bridge easily handles any RV on the RVezy platform. Watch for afternoon thunderstorms from June through September, they pop up fast and can drop heavy rain in minutes. During hurricane season (June through November), check the National Weather Service Wilmington forecast each morning. Avoid driving the historic downtown grid in anything over 25 feet, park at the Southport Waterfront Park lot and walk the few blocks of Howe and Moore Streets instead.
weather.gov/ilm/What amenities do Southport area campgrounds offer?
Most RV parks near Southport offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer) at every site, which means you can stay plugged in all trip. Oak Island Campground typically provides 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, bathhouses, and a dog area, with easy access into town. Holden Beach RV Park adds WiFi, walking trails, and a playground. Carolina Beach State Park offers 50 amp sites, hot showers, and a marina. If you're moving between sites and need a public dump station or potable water, several Brunswick County parks accommodate that for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water before crossing to Oak Island, the island's water has a slight mineral taste many visitors notice.
ncparks.gov/state-parks/carolina-beach-state-park/campingWhat's included inside a typical Southport RV rental?
Southport rentals come well equipped for the coastal climate. Expect a fully stocked kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning (essential for July and August humidity), heating for cool winter nights, and comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 depending on the layout. Most listings include linens, towels, a flat screen TV, and seatbelted seating for travel. Campervans and Class B motorhomes are great for couples, Class C and travel trailers suit families, and Class A coaches deliver house-on-wheels comfort. Many hosts add WiFi hotspots, outdoor chairs, beach umbrellas, and bikes as included or low cost extras, perfect for an Oak Island day trip.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Southport%2C%20North%20CarolinaWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Southport RV rental?
Hosts offer add-ons that make a Southport RV trip even easier. Common extras include delivery and setup (usually mileage based from the host's location), kitchen and linen packages, generator use (sometimes included, sometimes hourly), bike racks, beach chairs, kayaks, paddleboards, and grills. Pickup is typically at the host's location with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough, and dropoff times are often flexible if you message ahead. Mileage policies vary by listing, so check the details before you book or ask the host directly. Pro tip: a host's beach gear package usually beats buying chairs and umbrellas at Oak Island shops and hauling them home.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Southport%2C%20North%20CarolinaHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. You pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, and your funds are held safely until your trip begins. Most listings require a refundable security deposit (amount varies by RV class), which is authorized on your card before pickup and released after dropoff once the host confirms the RV is returned in good shape. To avoid deposit issues, take photos at pickup and dropoff, return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement, and empty the gray and black tanks at an approved dump station before returning the rig.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre campervan rentals available in Southport for couples?
Yes, campervan rental Southport options are growing on RVezy, and they're a perfect fit for the Cape Fear coast. A Class B motorhome lets you park easily near the Southport Marina, drive on for the Southport-Fort Fisher ferry, and slip into smaller wooded sites at Carolina Beach State Park that a Class A simply can't reach. Expect 18 to 22 MPG fuel economy, a compact kitchen, a wet bath, and a queen or convertible bed. Filter by Class B or Campervan on RVezy to see availability, and book 2 to 3 months ahead for spring and fall weekends, these compact rigs are in high demand for romantic getaways.
