Campgrounds near St. Pauls, North Carolina
St. Pauls sits in Robeson County along the I-95 corridor between Lumberton and Fayetteville, putting RV travelers within easy reach of both interstate campgrounds and Coastal Plain state parks. The town is a practical base for overnight stops, weekend trips, or longer stays exploring the Lumber River and Cape Fear region.
Closest options include Lake Waldos Beach Campground and Spacious Skies Sandy Run for lakeside private-park camping, plus the Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey for a full-service stop right off the highway. For state-park camping, Jones Lake State Park sits about an hour east, covers 2,208 acres including the Carolina bay lakes of Jones Lake and Salters Lake, and was established in 1939 as one of the oldest state parks in North Carolina. To the south, the Princess Ann access of Lumber River State Park offers primitive and paddle-in sites along a designated Wild and Scenic river.
Together these options cover the full range: hookup sites for larger rigs, family-friendly resort amenities, and rustic tent or paddle-in camping for travelers who want quieter nights on the water.
Things to do near St. Pauls
Water recreation is the main draw. The Lumber River runs 115 miles and earned federal designation as a National Wild and Scenic River, the only blackwater river in the state to hold that honor, and the Princess Ann access offers a boat ramp, paddling routes, and fishing for bass and panfish. At Jones Lake State Park, families can swim at a sandy beach, rent small craft, and fish two natural Carolina Bay lakes.
On land, both state parks maintain hiking loops through longleaf pine and bald cypress forest. Cyclists and drivers use the flat Coastal Plain roads to reach nearby Elizabethtown, White Lake, and historic downtown Lumberton. Rainy-day options include shopping and dining along I-95 exits and the small-town cafes and museums in Fayetteville, about forty minutes north.

Spring and fall are the strongest seasons for RV travel in this part of North Carolina. From late March through May, daytime highs sit in the seventies, humidity is low, and biting insects are manageable. October and early November bring cool nights, drier air, and clear paddling conditions on the Lumber River.
Summer is hot and humid, with average July highs in the upper eighties and afternoon thunderstorms common. Peak summer weekends fill campgrounds quickly, especially those with swim beaches like Jones Lake and Lake Waldos Beach.
Winter camping is quiet and workable, with average January highs in the low fifties and overnight lows near freezing. State-park campgrounds in the area remain open year-round, though rangers may reduce hours and some private parks scale back amenities. How to book
North Carolina state parks use a single centralized reservation system. Reservations must be made 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 6 months in advance at Lumber River and Jones Lake state parks. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis if not reserved.
For summer weekends at either state park, book as early as possible. Private campgrounds along I-95, including the Lumberton / I-95 KOA Journey and Spacious Skies Sandy Run, take reservations directly through their own websites or brand apps and generally offer more flexibility for last-minute trips.
Group campsites are available by reservation only, and reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance.
What to expect
Expect a flat Coastal Plain landscape of pine forest, cypress swamp, and blackwater rivers. Cell coverage is generally good along I-95 and in Lumberton but can drop inside state-park boundaries. Site quality varies widely: each of the 20 wooded campsites at Jones Lake State Park is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring or grill, with drinking water and a bathhouse nearby, and six sites have full RV hookups for electric, water, and sewer, while the Princess Ann access offers a small set of primitive walk-to tent sites near the Lumber River.
Mosquitoes, ticks, and biting flies are active from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent and long layers for evenings. Pets are allowed at the park and campsites, except inside buildings, and must be on an attended leash of no longer than 6 feet at all times.
State-park front gates close and lock at posted closing times, with no exiting or entering after that time. Plan grocery runs and fuel stops before returning to your site in the evening.
