Campgrounds and RV parks near Stem, NC

Stem is a small town in Granville County, in the northern Piedmont of North Carolina, roughly a half-hour drive from Durham and Raleigh. The area sits directly above Falls Lake, a large US Army Corps of Engineers reservoir that anchors most of the region's public camping. The lake and its surrounding state recreation area are the closest RV-friendly destinations for travelers based in Stem. Falls Lake State Recreation Area is located in Durham and Wake counties about 15 miles east of downtown Durham and provides seven access areas to the reservoir. More than 300 campsites are distributed among these accesses, with a mix of drive-in RV loops, tent areas, group sites, and boat-in options. Rolling View and Holly Point are the two developed campgrounds closest to Stem and carry most of the RV traffic. Additional options in the corridor include BW Wells Group Campgrounds for larger parties, William B Umstead State Park closer to Raleigh, and the privately operated Triangle RV Park for full-hookup stays. Together they cover most trip styles, from lakefront sites to serviced RV pads within reach of Research Triangle attractions.

Falls Lake and William B Umstead sites are reserved through the North Carolina State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Reservations must be made at least one day ahead of arrival and can be booked up to six months in advance, which is the practical planning window for peak summer and holiday weekends. At least one adult 18 or older must accompany each group, and each site is generally limited to one RV, trailer, or pop-up plus one tent, or two tents. Each site accommodates up to six people. Group sites at BW Wells Group Campgrounds follow separate group-camping rules and are booked as whole facilities. Triangle RV Park handles bookings directly with the operator and is a fallback for full-hookup needs when state park sites are sold out or closed for maintenance.
