Campgrounds near Vander
Vander is an unincorporated community in Cumberland County, North Carolina, located just east of Fayetteville along the US 301 and I-95 corridor. The area sits in the Sandhills region of the coastal plain, with flat, sandy terrain and stands of longleaf pine. Most RV travelers use Vander as a low-traffic base for visiting Fayetteville, Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), and the Carolina bay lakes to the southeast.
RV options within roughly a 30-minute drive include Spacious Skies Sandy Run, which sits just off I-95 and is popular with north-south travelers, and Fayetteville RV Resort and Cottages, which caters to extended stays and military families. Closer to the city, Lake Waldos Beach Campground offers full-hookup sites with lake and pool access, and RV Campground and Storage Tucker Lake serves travelers looking for a smaller, quieter setup.
For a state-park experience, Jones Lake State Park is about 40 miles southeast of Fayetteville in Bladen County and offers wooded sites, including a handful with full RV hookups, on a natural Carolina bay lake.
Things to do near Vander
Fayetteville anchors most day trips from Vander. The Airborne and Special Operations Museum, the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex, and the Cape Fear Botanical Garden are all within a short drive. Families often pair a museum visit with the Cape Fear River Trail or a stop at Fascinate-U Children's Museum.
Outdoor time centers on water and pine forest. Jones Lake State Park has a swim beach, a four-mile Bay Trail loop around the lake, and canoe and paddleboat rentals from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Only motors of 10 horsepower and under are allowed on the lake, which keeps it calm for paddling and fishing.
Carvers Creek State Park, west of Vander, adds longleaf pine trails and a historic millpond for a low-key half-day hike.

This is peak season for Lake Waldos Beach Campground and for swimming at Jones Lake State Park, but sites at popular parks fill in advance, especially on holiday weekends. We had a great time with our camper van rental. It was very clean and well maintained. The van was completely stocked with everything we needed to enjoy a weekend by the lake. The owner gave us a thorough orientation of all of the vans systems. We highly recommended renting “Roy” the Solis camper van.

How to book campgrounds near Vander
Private RV parks in the Fayetteville area, including Spacious Skies Sandy Run, Fayetteville RV Resort and Cottages, and Lake Waldos Beach Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Extended-stay and monthly rates are common in this market because of military traffic tied to Fort Liberty, so short weekend windows can be tight and are worth booking a few weeks out.
Jones Lake State Park uses the North Carolina State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Family sites can be booked up to six months in advance, and unreserved sites are released on a first-come, first-served basis. The primitive group campsite is available by reservation only, must be booked at least 48 hours ahead, and holds a maximum of 35 people.
What to expect on the ground
Expect flat, sandy terrain and pine shade at most sites. Private parks near Vander typically offer level gravel or paved pads, 30/50-amp service, water, sewer, and Wi-Fi, with some sites reserved for big rigs. Lake Waldos Beach Campground adds a pool and lake access, and several nearby parks welcome pets on leash.
At Jones Lake State Park, the campground has 20 wooded sites arranged in a loop around a central bathhouse, each with a picnic table, fire ring, and paved parking spur. Six of the sites offer full hookups for electric, water, and sewer; the rest are non-electric. Check-in is 3:00 p.m. and checkout is 12:00 noon, and the park does not have a dump station.
Cell coverage is generally reliable across Cumberland County, but expect a weaker signal deeper into Bladen County near Jones and Salters lakes. Grocery, fuel, and RV supplies are easiest to handle in Fayetteville before heading out to the state parks.
