Camping near Vass, North Carolina
Vass sits in Moore County within North Carolina's Sandhills region, a rolling landscape of longleaf pine, wiregrass, and small farm ponds south of Raleigh and north of Fayetteville. The town drains toward the Little River and lies in the Cape Fear River watershed, which shapes the fishing ponds, creeks, and equestrian trails that dominate local recreation.
RV renters use Vass as a base for the Pinehurst and Southern Pines area, home to golf, horse country, and longleaf pine preserves. Nearby private campgrounds include Daily Walk Stables and Campground, Farm Pond Campground, Idlewild Farm Stays, Sycamore Lodge Resort, and Lake Waldos Beach Campground, giving renters a range of full-hookup resorts, farm stays, and rustic pond-side sites.
The closest state park with camping is Raven Rock State Park in Lillington. Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve near Southern Pines and Carvers Creek State Park near Fayetteville are day-use only, useful for hiking rather than overnight stays.
Things to do around Vass
The Sandhills reward slow days outside. Families fish farm ponds, ride horses through pine forest, and swim at private lakes. Sycamore Lodge Resort caters to families with pools and organized activities, while Lake Waldos Beach Campground and Farm Pond Campground focus on swimming, paddling, and fishing.
Day trips are short. Weymouth Woods Sandhills Nature Preserve protects old-growth longleaf pine and offers easy interpretive trails and ranger-led walks. Carvers Creek State Park adds multiuse trails through longleaf pine and access to a historic millpond.
Golf, tennis, and equestrian events fill the calendar in nearby Pinehurst and Southern Pines. Downtown Southern Pines has restaurants, breweries, and a walkable train-town core suited to an evening off the campground.

When to visit Vass

March - May
72° / 48°F 90 mmPrime shoulder season; dogwoods bloom, sites fill fast.
- summer
June - August
88° / 68°F 115 mmHot and humid; afternoon thunderstorms common.
- fall
September - November
72° / 50°F 95 mmClear skies; tropical remnants possible in September.
- winter
December - February
52° / 34°F 85 mmMild days, cold nights; light snow possible.
Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel. March through May brings mild days, blooming dogwoods, and the horse-country show season around Southern Pines and Pinehurst. September and October cool off after the humid summer and often deliver the clearest skies of the year.
Summer is hot and muggy. Afternoon thunderstorms are common from June through August, and late summer is one of the wettest stretches in the Sandhills. Air-conditioned rigs, shaded sites, and pond swimming make it manageable, and school-break demand is heaviest at family resorts like Sycamore Lodge Resort.
Winters are short and generally mild, with occasional freezes and light snow. Many private campgrounds stay open year round, though seasonal amenities such as pools and splash pads typically close from late fall through early spring. Statewide burn bans can be issued during dry stretches, so check North Carolina State Parks and county fire notices before planning a campfire.

We had a great time with our camper van rental. It was very clean and well maintained. The van was completely stocked with everything we needed to enjoy a weekend by the lake. The owner gave us a thorough orientation of all of the vans systems. We highly recommended renting “Roy” the Solis camper van.

Booking a campsite near Vass
Private campgrounds near Vass, including Daily Walk Stables and Campground, Farm Pond Campground, Idlewild Farm Stays, Sycamore Lodge Resort, and Lake Waldos Beach Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites, by phone, or through third-party listing platforms. Book early for holiday weekends, USGA events at Pinehurst, and steeplechase weekends in Southern Pines.
For state-run camping, the nearest option is Raven Rock State Park in Lillington. North Carolina state park reservations are processed through ReserveAmerica, either online or by phone. Check the current booking window on the ReserveAmerica portal before your trip.
For an RV rental, confirm site length, hookups, and any big-rig turning limits at farm-based sites before booking.
What to expect on the ground
Expect sandy soil, tall longleaf pines, and quiet rural roads. Sites at resort-style parks such as Sycamore Lodge Resort tend to be level with full hookups, paved or gravel pads, and family amenities. Farm-based options like Daily Walk Stables and Campground and Idlewild Farm Stays are smaller and more rustic, with limited hookups and hands-on farm experiences.
Cell service is generally usable but patchy in wooded pockets. Groceries, propane, and RV supplies are easy to find in Southern Pines, Aberdeen, and Sanford, all within a short drive.
Bugs are part of the deal in warm months. Mosquitoes, chiggers, and ticks are active from spring through fall, so bring repellent, treat clothing, and check for ticks after hiking in the pine woods.

Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually 10 to 14 mpg combined. North Carolina gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and you'll find plenty of large-canopy stations along US-1, US-15/501, and I-95 that handle taller RVs easily. Pro tip: fuel up in Aberdeen or Sanford rather than tiny country stations where pumps and canopies can be tight.
