Campgrounds and RV parks near Wanchese, NC

The Wanchese harbor and seafood docks are the local draw, with charter boats running out of Oregon Inlet Fishing Center just across the bridge. Anglers target red drum, bluefish, and offshore species; kayakers put in from sound-side launches and creek access points around the island. Roanoke Island itself covers most family stops in a single loop: Roanoke Island Festival Park, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, the Elizabethan Gardens, and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. Beach days are a short drive over the causeway to Nags Head and South Nags Head, with Jockey's Ridge State Park and the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills further north. South along NC 12, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge offers birding, boardwalk trails, and undeveloped beach walks.

Summer is peak season on Roanoke Island and the surrounding Outer Banks. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, camping at Oregon Inlet is limited to 14 days within a 30-day period, and private parks near Wanchese, Manteo, and Kitty Hawk typically book weeks or months in advance for weekends. Warm, humid days and crowded beaches are the norm from June through August. Spring and fall are the practical shoulder windows for RV renters. April through mid-June and September through early November offer milder temperatures, easier reservations, and strong fishing, though September is historically the wettest month and coincides with the peak of Atlantic hurricane season. Oregon Inlet and Ocracoke campgrounds are open year-round, while Cape Point and Frisco run a seasonal schedule from early April through late November. Winter is the quiet season. Many private OBX campgrounds reduce operations, cold and windy weather off the sound is common, and some ocean-side services scale back. Year-round options, including Oregon Inlet and select private parks, remain available for off-season stays.

Sites near Wanchese fall into two camps. Private parks such as The Refuge on Roanoke Island, Beechland Campground, OBX Campground, and Kitty Hawk RV Park offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, bathhouses, laundry, WiFi, and often a pool, dock, or pond. Oregon Inlet Campground is a different experience. Its sites are spread across three loops (A, B, and C), each with a bathhouse featuring flush toilets, potable water, and heated showers; forty-seven sites include electric, water, and sewer hookups, and all sites are exposed with no shade trees, with sandy soil requiring longer tent stakes. A dump and water fill station are located directly across Highway 12 at Oregon Inlet Fishing Center and are free of charge for campers. Wood fires are not permitted; only charcoal cooking fires are allowed in a grill, stove, or other self-contained unit. Expect wind, sun exposure, sand, and mosquitoes in summer and fall. Bring longer stakes, bug spray, and shade if camping on the ocean side.
