Bethesda camping overview
Bethesda sits in Belmont County in eastern Ohio, on the western edge of the Appalachian Plateau. The area is defined by rolling wooded hills, reservoir lakes built by the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District (MWCD), and one nearby state park. Most campgrounds within a short drive are lakeside, with a mix of electric, full-hookup, and primitive sites for RVs and tents.
The closest option is Barkcamp State Park, an Ohio State Parks campground on Belmont Lake just south of town. A short drive west puts travelers at Piedmont Marina CG - MWCD and Clendening Marina Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist, both MWCD lake campgrounds run out of Freeport. Sparkman Lake and Zion Retreat and RV Park round out the immediate cluster, giving travelers several ways to base a trip within roughly 30 minutes of Bethesda.
The surrounding region is quiet and rural. Expect two-lane state highways, small towns for groceries and fuel, and destinations built around fishing, boating, and hiking rather than tourist strips.
Things to do near Bethesda
Water recreation drives most trips. Belmont Lake at Barkcamp State Park allows non-motorized craft and boats with electric motors on its 117 acres, plus a swim beach, fishing for bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, and saugeye, and an archery range in the park. Piedmont Lake, at 2,270 acres with a 10 hp motor limit, is known for muskellunge, saugeye, and catfish, and the marina rents boats and kayaks.
Clendening Lake, the largest undeveloped lake in Ohio, has more than 40 miles of shoreline, a 10 hp limit, and a reputation for bass fishing and solitude. Land-based options include hiking and bridle trails at Barkcamp, hunting on designated MWCD lands during posted seasons, and day trips to nearby Belmont County towns.

The main camping season in eastern Ohio runs from April through October. MWCD lake campgrounds such as Piedmont Marina CG - MWCD and Clendening Marina Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist operate on a seasonal schedule roughly April through October, with the seasonal camping permit period running April through October. Cabin rentals at these marinas typically follow a Friday-to-Friday booking pattern in peak weeks.
Barkcamp State Park Campground is open year-round with electric service available all seasons. From November through early April, the shower house and dump station operate on a reduced basis and the B Loop is closed, so winter campers should plan for cold-weather conditions and limited facilities. Hunting is permitted in designated areas of the park during posted seasons in fall and winter.
Summer weekends and holidays fill fastest at lakeside sites. Fall brings cooler nights, changing foliage across the Appalachian hills, and lower occupancy midweek.

How to book campgrounds near Bethesda
Barkcamp State Park uses the Ohio State Parks reservation system at reserveohio.com. Sites are back-in only, some accommodating rigs up to 80 feet, and pet sites must be requested at booking because pets are only allowed on designated campsites. Shelterhouses can also be reserved online or by phone through the state central line.
MWCD campgrounds, including Piedmont Marina CG - MWCD and Clendening Marina Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist, book through the MWCD reservation portal or by calling the individual marina office. Zion Retreat and RV Park and Sparkman Lake are private operations, so book directly through the operator. For summer weekends, reserve well in advance; last-minute openings are usually cancellations.
What to expect at Bethesda campgrounds
Sites in this area lean rustic. At Barkcamp State Park, expect a 10-foot cement pad, fire ring, and picnic table at each site, with 150 electrified sites plus a smaller number of full-hookup sites and separate loops for tent, equestrian, and group camping. All sites are back-in, so drivers of longer rigs should plan approach and leveling accordingly.
MWCD marina campgrounds mix full-hookup 50-amp sites with electric-only and primitive spots, and both Piedmont Marina CG - MWCD and Clendening Marina Muskingum Watershed Conservancy Dist have shower houses, dump stations, and on-site marinas selling fuel, bait, and snacks. Cell coverage is spotty in the hills, Wi-Fi is generally limited to marina buildings, and the closest full-service groceries are in St. Clairsville or Cambridge.
