Campgrounds and RV parks near Buckeye Lake, OH

Buckeye Lake allows unlimited-horsepower boating, so water skiing, powerboats, and pontoons share the water with sailboats, canoes, and kayaks. Anglers pursue largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, channel catfish, bullhead catfish, and perch from the shore, from boats, and from a fishing pier on Mud Island. Two public swimming beaches, Fairfield Beach on the south shore and Crystal Beach on the north, operate from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Cranberry Bog State Nature Preserve, a sphagnum island and National Natural Landmark just off the north shore, is accessible only by boat and permit. The Greater Buckeye Lake Historical Society runs seasonal tours, and an annual open house is typically held in June. Off-water options include Dawes Arboretum and the Newark Earthworks, both within a short drive, plus day trips into downtown Columbus.

Peak season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, when the beaches are staffed, the water is warm enough for swimming, and lakeside restaurants and bars are in full swing. July and August average daytime highs in the low 80s Fahrenheit with high humidity, and weekends fill quickly, so booking a private campground four to eight weeks ahead is prudent. Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. May brings wildflowers and pleasant paddling weather, while September and October deliver mild days, changing foliage, and lower rates at most private parks. Expect scattered thunderstorms in late spring and early summer, and occasional lake advisories during algae blooms in late summer. Winter effectively closes overnight camping around the lake. Buckeye Lake State Park stays open for day-use, and ice fishing, ice skating, and ice boating are permitted when conditions allow, but most private campgrounds shut down or operate on a limited basis from November through March.

Most sites near Buckeye Lake are level gravel or grass pads with 30 and 50 amp electric, water, and sewer. The KOA offers pull-through, back-in, and patio RV sites plus rustic and deluxe cabins, along with a camp store, laundry, mini-golf, shuffleboard, and a fenced dog park. Cell service is generally strong across the area, and Wi-Fi is available at most private parks though speeds vary. Expect a mix of transient RVers and seasonal residents at the lake-area parks. Weekends can be lively, with music from lakeside bars carrying across the water, so travelers seeking quiet may prefer parks a few miles off the shoreline like Lazy River At Granville or Hidden Hill Campground. Pets are welcome at most sites on leash. Firewood is typically sold on-site, and importing outside wood is discouraged to limit invasive pests.
