Campgrounds and RV parks near Canal Winchester, OH

Water recreation anchors most trips. Hargus Lake at A.W. Marion State Park allows the use of hand-powered vessels and boats with electric motors, and anglers target largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish, while the park has approximately four miles of hiking trails and multiple picnicking locations. Lakeview RV Park offers fishing for bass, bluegill, catfish, and crappie, swimming in clean spring water, and scuba diving in the 60-foot-deep quarry with on-site tank refill services. Families traveling with kids will find on-site amenities at the private parks. The Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA offers a swimming pool, jump pillow, mini golf, shuffleboard, corn hole, and a game room, plus a fenced pet area. Off-site day trips reach downtown Columbus in about 25 minutes for the Columbus Zoo, COSI science center, and German Village. Hocking Hills State Park sits about an hour southeast for waterfalls and rock formations.

Columbus has a humid continental climate, characterized by humid, hot summers and cold winters, with no dry season. The prime RV camping window runs from late April through mid-October, with peak demand on weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day. A.W. Marion State Park's campground operates seasonally from late March through early November, and Lakeview RV Park has seasonal sites available April 15 to October 31. Spring brings unsettled weather and green-up, along with frequent rain that can leave lower sites muddy. Spring and autumn are unsettled seasons with fairly frequent rains and sudden changes in temperature, though there are also stable and pleasant periods, and Ohio is part of the area where tornadoes can form, most likely in spring but occasionally in autumn as well. Summer delivers warm days ideal for swimming and lake use, along with humid nights and afternoon thunderstorms. Fall is often the most comfortable stretch for RV travel, with cool nights and foliage color from mid to late October. Winter camping is limited. Snowfalls are frequent and at times can be abundant, with about 72 centimeters (28.3 inches) of snow per year on average, and water lines at private campgrounds are typically winterized.

Site quality varies. The Ohio State Parks campground offers a more rustic experience: twenty-nine sites have 50-amp electric hookups while the remaining sites are non-electric, each with a fire ring and picnic table, and the campground provides flush restrooms, vault latrines, and a dump station. Expect no full hookups, and cell service can be spotty in the woods around Hargus Lake. Private parks lean toward full-hookup RV camping. Lakeview RV Park has 70 level sites with 30 and 50 amp electric and full hook-ups available, and 30/50 amp electric hookup sites include concrete patios. The Buckeye Lake KOA features full or partial hookup campsites that are big rig friendly for RVs of up to 85 feet, many of which accommodate slide-out RVs, with free WiFi, cable TV, and a dump station. A.W. Marion has flush restrooms, ball courts, and a camp store as well as vault latrines, plus a designated non-fenced area that allows off-leash access to the lake for supervised dogs.
