Camping near Collins, Ohio
Collins sits in Huron County in north-central Ohio, about a 20-minute drive south of the Lake Erie shore and the Sandusky and Milan area. The village is small and rural, but its location puts RV travellers within easy reach of Cedar Point, Lake Erie beaches, and the historic town of Milan, birthplace of Thomas Edison.
RV options near Collins range from full-hookup parks geared to Cedar Point traffic to quieter riverside properties along the Huron River. Huron River Valley Campground and Marina and Riverview RV Park and Marina both sit on the water and cater to boaters, while Sandusky Milan RV Park is positioned for families heading to the amusement park. Timber Ridge Campground offers a wooded setting, and Freedom Valley Gay Campground in nearby New London serves LGBTQ+ travellers.
Ohio State Parks are also within driving distance, giving visitors a mix of private and public options for weekend and week-long stays.
Things to do near Collins
Cedar Point in Sandusky is the anchor attraction. The park features 18 roller coasters, a mile-long Lake Erie beach, an outdoor water park called Cedar Point Shores, and Camp Snoopy for younger children. Castaway Bay, an indoor water park resort, sits off the peninsula in Sandusky.
Beyond the amusement park, the Lake Erie Shores and Islands region includes Put-in-Bay, Kelleys Island, Marblehead Lighthouse, and the Jet Express ferry. Milan offers the Edison Birthplace Museum and the Milan Historical Museum. Closer to Collins, the Huron River supports fishing, kayaking, and boating, and Sheldon Marsh State Nature Preserve is a quiet spot for birding and shoreline walks.

The prime RV season in this part of Ohio runs from Cedar Point's opening in early May through Labor Day, followed by weekend-only park operation through Halloween during HalloWeekends. Summer weekends near Sandusky book out first, and campgrounds along the lake and river fill fastest on holiday weekends.
Spring brings mild temperatures, blooming trees, and softer demand, though rainfall picks up through May and some private parks open only partway through the month. Fall is a strong shoulder season with crisp air, foliage, and lighter crowds midweek, while HalloWeekends draws traffic back on Fridays and Saturdays into late October.
Winter is cold and snowy along the Lake Erie shore, and most private campgrounds and Cedar Point close for the season. Some Ohio State Park campgrounds stay open year-round, but expect limited services and closures based on regional weather.

How to book
Private campgrounds in the Collins and Sandusky area are booked directly through each property's website or reservation line. For Cedar Point weekends in July and August, booking several months ahead is strongly advised, and holiday weekends often fill earlier.
Ohio State Parks use a single centralized system at reserveohio.com, or the reservation call center at 866-644-6727, which is open from 7am to 7pm daily except some holidays. Campsite reservations open six months before the arrival date, while cabins open twelve months ahead. Parks in the state system no longer offer walk-in campsites, with Jesse Owens State Park the only exception for first-come, first-served camping. Same-day one-night stays are allowed within seven days of arrival if a site is open.
What to expect on arrival
Private RV parks in this corridor typically offer full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service, dump stations, laundry, and Wi-Fi of varying quality. Riverfront and marina sites at Huron River Valley Campground and Marina and Riverview RV Park and Marina add boat access, which is a draw during peak fishing weeks.
Roads from I-80/90 and US-250 into Collins are RV-friendly, but the two-lane county roads closer to some campgrounds can be narrow. Cedar Point traffic backs up along the Route 4 and US-6 corridors on summer Saturday mornings and Sunday evenings, so plan arrivals and departures accordingly.
Mosquitoes and biting flies are common near the river and marsh areas in mid-summer. Pack repellent, and expect cool evenings even in July given the lake influence.
