Camping near Fairfield Beach, Ohio
Fairfield Beach sits on the south shore of Buckeye Lake in Fairfield County, Ohio, on Lake Shore Drive in Walnut Township. The community is roughly 33 miles east of downtown Columbus and about 4 miles northwest of Thornville. The lake it fronts is 3,100 acres and anchors Buckeye Lake State Park, Ohio's oldest state park, built around a reservoir originally constructed in 1826 as a feeder lake for the Ohio and Erie Canal. Fairfield Beach itself includes a public swimming area, a boat ramp, a shelter house, and playground equipment.
RV travelers have a mix of options in the surrounding area. Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA Holiday, just off Interstate 70, is the closest full-service RV park and offers pull-through and back-in sites, cabins, and tent sites. The Grove By The River near Newark and Lazy River At Granville in the Welsh Hills add more resort-style choices within a short drive.
Further out, Lancaster RV Campground serves travelers heading toward Hocking Hills to the south, and Hidden Hill Campground rounds out the smaller, quieter options. Buckeye Lake State Park itself is day-use only, so overnight stays happen at these private campgrounds around the lake.
Things to do around Fairfield Beach
The lake drives most activity. Buckeye Lake is designated unlimited horsepower, so powerboats, waterskiers, and jet skis mix with pontoons, sailboats, kayaks, canoes, and rowboats. Nine launch ramps ring the lake, including the Fairfield Beach ramp on the south shore. Anglers target largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, perch, channel catfish, bullhead catfish, and muskellunge, and a valid Ohio fishing license is required for anyone 16 or older.
On land, a 4.1-mile paved multi-use path known as the Buckeye Lake Dam Trail runs along the dam from the Liebs Island trailhead on the south shore to the North Shore, good for walking, jogging, and cycling. Cranberry Bog State Nature Preserve, a rare floating sphagnum island, sits offshore and can be reached only by boat.
Families staying at Lazy River At Granville can add two heated pools, a sprayground, mini-golf, a zipline, and a BMX track without leaving the campground.

Peak camping season runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, which is also when the public swimming beaches at Fairfield Beach, Brooks Park, and Crystal Beach are officially open. Summer weekends fill quickly at private campgrounds around the lake, and holiday weeks around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are the tightest. Booking two to three months out is recommended for those dates.
Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots for RV renters who want milder temperatures and fewer crowds. Days are warm, evenings are cool enough for a campfire, and the lake stays busy but not overwhelmed. Themed weekends at Lazy River At Granville run April through October, and all week long in June, July, and August, extending the family-friendly season.
Winter is quiet. Buckeye Lake State Park stays open year-round for day use, and ice fishing, ice skating, and ice boating are possible when conditions permit, but most private campgrounds shift to limited or seasonal-only operation. Confirm winter availability directly with each campground before planning a cold-weather trip.

How to book a campsite near Fairfield Beach
Buckeye Lake State Park is day-use only, with no overnight campground, so RV stays happen at the private campgrounds nearby. Shelter houses at Fairfield Beach and elsewhere in the park can be reserved online through the Ohio State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica or by calling 866-644-6727, and reservations can be made up to 12 months in advance.
Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA Holiday takes bookings directly through the KOA website or app, with pull-through, back-in, cabin, and tent options. Lazy River At Granville, The Grove By The River, Lancaster RV Campground, and Hidden Hill Campground each accept reservations by phone or through their own websites and third-party platforms.
For summer weekends, reserve early. Site inventory at the smaller private grounds is limited, and holiday weekends routinely sell out.
What to expect on-site
Sites near Buckeye Lake range from full-hookup RV pads with 30- and 50-amp service to water-and-electric and tent-only sites. Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA offers deluxe patio sites, standard hookups, rustic and deluxe cabins, and tent sites in a wooded layout about 1.5 miles from Interstate 70. Lazy River At Granville accommodates big rigs with slide-outs and includes cable TV on many sites, WiFi, a dump station, propane, and laundry.
Expect typical private-campground amenities: hot showers, flush toilets, laundry, camp stores, playgrounds, and pool access at the larger properties. Personal golf carts at the KOA require a signed waiver and a permit purchased through the office.
Cell service is generally reliable across the Buckeye Lake area given the proximity to Columbus, and grocery stores, fuel, and lakeside restaurants are within a short drive of Fairfield Beach.
