Campgrounds near Fremont, Ohio
Fremont sits in Sandusky County in northwest Ohio, along the Sandusky River and about a 20 to 35 minute drive from Lake Erie ports at Port Clinton, Marblehead, and Sandusky. The area works well as an RV base for exploring the Lake Erie islands, Cedar Point, and the marshes of the western basin, while offering quieter inland camping away from the coastal crowds.
Private parks close to town include Leafy Oaks RV Park and Campground and Portageview RV & MH Resort, both handy for travelers using Fremont as a hub. Closer to the water, The Resort at Erie Landing caters to RVers who want quick access to the bay. Paradise Acres Camp Grounds and Camp Sabroske round out the nearby options with a more traditional family-campground feel.
Fremont itself is best known as the home of the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums, a 25-acre estate with the Hayes home, museum, and tomb. The location also puts campers within reach of the Ohio Turnpike at Exit 91, making it an easy stop on longer regional routes.
Things to do near Fremont
The Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums anchors most Fremont visits, with guided tours of the president's Victorian home, a renovated museum, and walking paths through Spiegel Grove. Fremont Speedway at the Sandusky County Fairgrounds runs sprint car and dirt truck racing on a dirt oval and is popular family entertainment.
Outdoors, the Sandusky River bisects the city and is used for canoeing and smallmouth bass fishing. The North Coast Inland Trail runs through Sandusky County as a paved rail-trail suitable for cycling and jogging.
Day trips are the real draw. Cedar Point in Sandusky sits about 35 minutes away, the Miller Ferry to Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island leaves from Catawba Point a short drive north, and Marblehead Lighthouse is another easy jaunt along the lake.

Peak RV season in the Fremont area runs from late spring through early fall, when Lake Erie attractions, Cedar Point, and the island ferries are all in full operation. Many Ohio State Park campgrounds in the region are open year-round, but most facilities scale back sharply in the colder months, with limited electric loops, closed showerhouses, and reduced water service.
Spring brings heavy songbird migration to the Lake Erie marshes, making April and May a strong window for birders visiting places like Magee Marsh and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge. It is also a wet stretch of the year, and low-lying campsites near the lake can be soggy after storms.
Summer is prime for beach days, boating, and Cedar Point, but weekends fill quickly at both public and private parks. Fall offers cooler temperatures, waterfowl migration, and easier reservations, though many camp stores and marinas close by late October.

How to book campgrounds near Fremont
Ohio State Park campsites in the region are booked through reserveohio.com or by calling the state reservation line at 866-644-6727. Reservations open up to six months in advance for campsites and unique getaway rentals, and up to twelve months in advance for cabins and day-use facilities. Walk-in camping is not offered at Ohio State Park campgrounds, so a reservation is required before arrival.
Stays are capped at 14 nights within any 30-day period at a given state park. Private campgrounds around Fremont, such as Leafy Oaks RV Park and Campground, Portageview RV & MH Resort, and The Resort at Erie Landing, take reservations directly through their own offices or websites and generally require a deposit at booking.
For summer weekends and holidays, book as early as the six-month window allows, particularly for full-hookup and lakeside sites.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Fremont is flat farmland and river bottom, transitioning to marsh and beach along Lake Erie. Sites at lake-adjacent parks can be low and slow to drain after heavy rain, so leveling blocks and a good doormat help. Mosquitoes and biting flies are common near the marshes from late spring through summer.
Cell coverage is generally solid across Sandusky County and the Lake Erie shore. Most private parks near Fremont offer full hookups, while state park campgrounds range from full-hookup to electric-only and non-electric sites. Off-season stays at state parks typically mean the showerhouse is closed and water is only available at the dump station or check-in office.
Quiet hours at Ohio State Parks run 10 p.m. to 7 a.m., pets are allowed at most sites on a leash, and fires are permitted only in the provided rings.

Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy to see local options, then message the host with your destination, whether that is Camp Sandusky, East Harbor State Park, or a backyard family reunion. Pro tip: ask about pickup at the end of your stay too, so you can simply lock the door and head home.

For an Ohio State Parks stay, reserve through ReserveOhio well in advance. Pro tip: many of these fill up fast on summer weekends, so book early and consider midweek arrivals for the best site selection.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/reserve-a-spotWhen is the best time of year for a Fremont, OH RV trip?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a Fremont, OH RV trip. June through August brings warm Lake Erie swimming weather with highs typically in the low to mid 80s F and lively festival energy downtown. September is a local favorite with comfortable 70-degree days, fewer crowds at Cedar Point, and golden harvest light along the Sandusky River. Spring (April to May) brings green landscapes and bird migration through the Lake Erie marshes, though you will want layers for chilly 40 to 50 degree nights. Pro tip: time your visit with the Sandusky County Fair in late August for a true small-town Ohio experience just minutes from your campground.
weather.gov/cle/I have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving one around Fremont?
Yes, Fremont is one of the friendlier places to learn. The roads here are flat, traffic is light outside of Cedar Point peak weekends, and your host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, hookups, holding tanks, and slide-outs. If you are nervous about navigating US-20 or merging onto I-80 (Ohio Turnpike), choose a smaller Class C or campervan, or simply book a host who offers delivery so you can skip the drive entirely. Most first time renting an RV guests tell us it felt easier than expected after the first hour. Pro tip: do a quick parking-lot practice loop at a quiet spot like the Sandusky County Fairgrounds before heading out.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or flat tire during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Fremont, OH on RVezy comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included with the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are on the Ohio Turnpike, parked at East Harbor State Park, or rolling toward Put-in-Bay. The service covers things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing to the nearest qualified service location. RVezy support is also reachable to coordinate with your host if needed. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before pickup and snap a photo of the RV tire pressure sticker so any service tech has the info they need fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my RV from Fremont across state or international borders?
You can absolutely travel across state lines. RV road trips from Fremont easily reach Michigan (Mackinaw City is about 4.5 hours north), Pennsylvania (Presque Isle in Erie is about 2 hours east), Indiana, and Kentucky, all covered under standard RVezy bookings. Heading to Canada? Cross-border travel into Ontario via the Detroit-Windsor crossing may be allowed depending on the host and insurance setup, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: a popular Lake Erie loop from Fremont takes you through Cleveland, Erie PA, and Niagara Falls in about a week.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I expect?
Plan smart and you will be fine. Most Class C motorhomes around Fremont average 8 to 12 mpg, Class B campervans get 16 to 20 mpg, and towing a travel trailer with a pickup usually lands around 10 to 13 mpg. Ohio gas prices generally run a bit below the national average, and Fremont has plenty of easy-access fuel stops along US-20 and SR-53, including truck-friendly stations near the Ohio Turnpike exits. For a 3-day trip with 300 miles of driving in a Class C, budget roughly $100 to $150 in fuel depending on current prices. Pro tip: use a fuel price app like GasBuddy to scout prices before fueling up, and fill up before entering the turnpike where prices can be higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campsite near Fremont?
Earlier is better, especially for summer. Ohio State Parks like East Harbor, Maumee Bay, and South Bass Island open reservations up to six months in advance through the ReserveOhio system, and prime Lake Erie weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) often book out within days. Private campgrounds such as Camp Sandusky and Portage Trail typically take reservations directly on their websites or by phone. For a stress-free Fremont, OH RV trip in July or August, aim to lock in your site 2 to 3 months ahead. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday to Thursday) give you a much better shot at waterfront sites and quieter neighbors.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/reserve-a-spotWhat are driving conditions like around Fremont?
Driving around Fremont is generally relaxed and RV-friendly. The terrain is flat farmland with elevations around 600 feet, making it ideal for newer drivers, and major routes like US-20, SR-53, and I-80 (Ohio Turnpike) are well-maintained with wide shoulders. Watch for two seasonal quirks: summer thunderstorms can roll in fast off Lake Erie, and winter brings lake-effect snow that can quickly reduce visibility. Traffic spikes on Cedar Point weekends along US-250 in Sandusky, so consider back routes like SR-412. Pro tip: avoid driving during late afternoon summer thunderstorms, when crosswinds along open farm stretches can affect taller RVs.
weather.gov/cle/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds around Fremont?
You'll find well-equipped sites within minutes of town. Most established campgrounds near Fremont (Camp Sandusky, Portage Trail, East Harbor State Park, Maumee Bay) offer 30 and 50 amp electric, water hookups, and sewer at full-service sites, plus clean restrooms, hot showers, and on-site dump stations. State parks like East Harbor add laundry, camp stores, swimming beaches, and bike rentals. Need to top off water or dump tanks mid-trip? Most parks let day visitors use the dump station for a small fee. Pro tip: when booking, ask about pull-through versus back-in sites and max RV length, because some older Ohio campgrounds top out around 35 feet for comfortable maneuvering.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-harbor-state-parkWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Fremont?
More than you'd expect, and often more than a hotel room. A typical campervan rental in Fremont sleeps 2 to 4 and includes a kitchenette with fridge, stove, and sink. Class C motorhomes step up with a queen bed, bunk space, full bathroom with shower, dinette, AC, furnace, and outdoor awning. Travel trailers and fifth wheels often sleep 6 to 8 with similar amenities. Many listings include a generator or solar setup, USB charging, smart TV, and even outdoor speakers for tailgating at Fremont Speedway. Pro tip: each listing has a detailed amenities checklist, so filter by what matters most (sleeps count, bathroom, generator) before reaching out to the host.
energy.gov/energysaver/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Add-ons make your trip easier and more fun. Common extras for RV rental Ohio bookings include camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, bike racks, kayaks, generators, propane fills, and pet cleaning fees, with pricing set by each host. Pickup is usually at the host home in or near Fremont, with delivery available to spots like Camp Sandusky or right at your driveway for an additional fee based on distance. Mileage policies vary by listing, with most including 100 to 150 free miles per day and unlimited mileage available as an upgrade. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen package on your first booking so you can arrive empty-handed and start your trip relaxed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106554-Mileage-and-generator-usageHow does payment and the security deposit work?
It is all secure and handled through the platform. When you book an RV rental in Fremont, OH on RVezy, you pay through the website with a credit or debit card, and the booking total is processed according to RVezy payment terms. A refundable security deposit is authorized separately (amount shown on the listing) and released after return as long as the RV comes back in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkaround with photos at pickup, follow the host mileage and tank-dumping instructions, and return on time. Pro tip: keep your fuel and dump station receipts to easily show you followed return requirements.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat is a great family RV trip itinerary starting from Fremont?
You are in the perfect launchpad for a family RV trip in Fremont. Start with two nights at Camp Sandusky and spend a full day at Cedar Point (about 25 minutes away, known as the Roller Coaster Capital of the World). Next, head about 30 minutes north to East Harbor State Park for Lake Erie swimming and a side trip to the Marblehead Lighthouse. On day four, catch the Miller or Jet Express ferry to Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island for cave tours and family-friendly biking. Wrap up back in Fremont with the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library and Museums, the first presidential library in the United States. Pro tip: buy Cedar Point tickets online in advance and arrive at opening to maximize ride time before afternoon lines build.
