Camping near Galena, Ohio
Galena sits in Delaware County, Ohio, about 30 minutes north of downtown Columbus and directly adjacent to Alum Creek Reservoir. The village is a practical base for RV travelers who want lake access, state-park amenities, and quick highway connections back to Columbus attractions.
The surrounding area is dominated by Alum Creek State Park, one of central Ohio's largest and busiest public campgrounds. Alum Creek State Park offers electric and full-hookup sites operated by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, with a 3,000-foot swim beach, boat ramps, and marked trails. Private options round out the mix: Berkshire Lake Campground and Berkshire Campgrounds are close-in options with RV sites, while Cross Creek Camping Resort and Sunbury / Columbus North KOA Holiday sit a short drive away with resort-style amenities.
Most sites in the area accommodate large RVs, and 30- and 50-amp service is standard at the state park and the private resorts. Reservations are strongly recommended in summer.
Things to do around Galena
The main draw is Alum Creek Reservoir, a 3,387-acre lake open to unlimited-horsepower boating, waterskiing, sailing, kayaking, and fishing for bass, bluegill, crappie, walleye, and muskie. The park's swim beach stretches about 3,000 feet and is the largest inland beach in Ohio, with a separate four-acre lakeside dog park nearby.
On land, Alum Creek State Park has miles of hiking trails, roughly 14 miles of mountain-bike routes, and about 38 miles of bridle paths served by a primitive equestrian camp. Playgrounds, volleyball, horseshoe pits, and miniature golf inside the campground are practical for families with kids.
Off the park, downtown Sunbury and historic Delaware are short drives with restaurants and shops. Polaris Fashion Place and the Columbus Zoo are both reachable within about 30 minutes, useful rainy-day backups.

Peak camping season at Alum Creek State Park runs from April through October. The main campground stays open year-round, but off-peak service from November 1 to April 15 is limited: only Area 2 and the A, B, and G rows are available, full-hookup sites have sewer but no water, and restrooms are closed. Plan for self-contained RV use in that window.
Summer weekends and holidays fill quickly. Reservations at Alum Creek open six months in advance through ReserveOhio, and popular waterfront and full-hookup sites often book at the six-month mark for Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day weekends.
Spring and early fall offer milder temperatures, lower crowds, and good fishing. Late spring and early summer bring the highest rainfall totals in central Ohio, so expect afternoon thunderstorms. Winter brings freezing temperatures, occasional snow, and closed beach and boat-rental facilities.
