Campgrounds near Gallipolis, Ohio
Gallipolis sits on the Ohio River in Gallia County, along the West Virginia border in the Appalachian foothills of southeastern Ohio. The area gives RV renters access to state parks, private resorts, and a KOA within roughly an hour's drive, plus a well-known regional festival directly across the river in Point Pleasant, West Virginia.
Close-in private options include Kountry Resort Campground and, during the annual festival, the Mothman Festival Campground in Point Pleasant. For hookups and family amenities on the West Virginia side, the Huntington / Fox Fire KOA Holiday is the nearest KOA property.
Jackson Lake State Park is a small public recreation area centered on 242-acre Jackson Lake in Jackson County, Ohio, with activities including camping, boating, fishing, swimming, and picnicking. Farther north, 292-acre Lake Alma State Park sits in the rugged, scenic hill country of Vinton County, with a quiet 60-acre lake and a gentle creek meandering through a wooded valley.
Things to do near Gallipolis
Water recreation anchors most trips. Jackson Lake State Park centers around 242-acre Jackson Lake, which provides a 200-foot sand beach, fishing, and an ADA-accessible boat launch.
At Lake Alma, paddling is the main draw. Hand-powered vessels and boats with electric motors only are permitted on the lake, a boat launch ramp is located at the northeast edge, and the Lake Alma Boathouse rents canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats, and pontoon boats in spring, summer, and fall.
On land, families can hike wooded trails at both state parks, ride the paved path around Lake Alma, and cross the river to Point Pleasant for the Mothman Museum and riverfront parks. Gallipolis City Park hosts community events along the Ohio River.

Peak camping season runs late spring through early fall. Jackson Lake State Park Campground operates seasonally, roughly early April through mid-December, so shoulder-season stays there are limited to those months. Lake Alma State Park is open year round, though boat rentals and full services taper off after fall.
Summer weekends fill fastest, especially around the Fourth of July and Labor Day. The Mothman Festival in Point Pleasant is held on the third weekend of September and draws thousands of visitors, so lodging and campsites across the river in Gallia County book out well in advance during that weekend. Fall brings strong hardwood color across the Appalachian foothills through mid to late October.
Winter camping is possible at Lake Alma, but expect cold nights, occasional snow, and reduced amenities. Full-hookup sites provide electric only during winter months. Spring can be wet, with higher river flows and muddy trails after storms.
How to book campgrounds near Gallipolis
Ohio state park sites use a single centralized system. Reservations are required for all Ohio State Park campgrounds and can be made through ReserveOhio.com or by calling (866) 644-6727. Reservations may be made six months in advance online or by phone.
Private campgrounds book directly. Kountry Resort Campground and the Huntington / Fox Fire KOA Holiday take reservations through their own websites or by phone, with KOA sites also bookable through the KOA app. The Mothman Festival Campground operates around festival weekend and typically requires advance registration tied to the event.
For summer holiday weekends and the September festival weekend, book two to three months out. Confirm rig length limits before booking, as several state park loops have short or narrow pads.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain in this part of southeastern Ohio is hilly and heavily wooded, so approach roads to the state parks include grades and tight turns. Jackson Lake State Park's campground has 34 electric sites with 50-amp service, accommodating tent campers and RVs up to 35 feet in length. Sites include fire rings and picnic tables, and the campground offers vault toilets, potable water, and a dump station.
Lake Alma has 81 campsites, 72 of them RV friendly, with six full-hookup sites, 67 electric-only sites, and ten primitive sites. Sites can be close together and some pads are sloped, so expect a social, family-oriented atmosphere rather than backcountry quiet.
Cell service is spotty in the hollows. Stock groceries in Gallipolis, Jackson, or Wellston before heading to a park, and carry cash for smaller private campgrounds and festival vendors.

Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the nightly rate, but it's easy to plan for. Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get around 10-14 MPG, Class A rigs typically run 7-10 MPG, and a truck towing a travel trailer lands around 10-12 MPG. Ohio gas prices generally track close to the national average, and Gallipolis stations along US-35 and OH-7 (Marathon, Speedway, Circle K) are convenient for fill-ups. For a 300-mile weekend loop in a Class C at $3.30/gallon, expect roughly $75-$100 in fuel. Pro tip: download GasBuddy and fill up in Gallipolis or Jackson before heading into Wayne National Forest where stations thin out.

Pro tip: for the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival in early September, reserve a Gallipolis-area site by April or you'll be camping 30+ miles out.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/reserve-a-place-to-stay/state-park-camping-and-lodgingWhat are the driving conditions like around Gallipolis?
Driving an RV around Gallipolis is generally easy and scenic. US-35 is a modern four-lane highway connecting you to Charleston, WV and Dayton, OH with gentle grades. OH-7 hugs the Ohio River with beautiful but winding stretches, take it slow in a larger Class A. The Appalachian foothills mean some hilly two-lanes east of town, and winter (December-February) can bring ice and occasional snow, so heated tanks matter if you travel off-season. Summer afternoon thunderstorms occasionally cause flash flooding in low-lying creek areas. Pro tip: avoid downtown Gallipolis's narrow First Avenue streets in big rigs and stick to OH-7 and US-35; locals know the Silver Memorial Bridge into West Virginia has plenty of clearance for any motorhome.
