Popular hiking areas near Granville include Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve, the Dawes Arboretum, and Buckeye Lake State Park, all within a short drive. The Dawes Arboretum spans nearly 1,910 acres of plant collections, gardens and natural areas, with approximately 12 miles of hiking trails and roadways for a four-mile driving tour, and the Cypress Swamp is one of the northernmost bald-cypress swamps in North America. On the water, the 3,100-acre Buckeye Lake is designated as an unlimited horsepower lake, but pontoons, sailboats, canoes, and rowboats are also common, and anglers enjoy catches of perch, bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, channel catfish, and bullhead catfish. The T.J. Evans Trail links Granville with Newark and Johnstown for easy family cycling. At the campground level, Lazy River At Granville runs a swimming pool, activities, and family-oriented weekends that keep kids busy on rainy afternoons.

Central Ohio has a four-season climate, and camping demand tracks it closely. Summers are warm and humid, winters are cold with periodic snow, and skies are partly cloudy year round. Late spring through early fall is the core RV season, with the busiest weekends running from Memorial Day through Labor Day and again in early October for fall color. Spring brings green-up and higher rainfall, with wet ground at tent sites into April. Summer is peak family season, when private resorts like Lazy River At Granville and Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA Holiday run themed weekends and pool days; sites at popular parks can book weeks ahead for holidays. On Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, the minimum stay at Ohio state park campgrounds is 3 nights, so plan trips around those blocks. Fall weekends draw visitors for foliage along the Licking River and harvest events at Dawes Arboretum. Winter is quiet. Some private parks reduce services or close sections, and Ohio state park campgrounds shift to limited winter operations. Calling ahead for hours and site availability is recommended.

Sites in this area range from full-hookup pull-throughs at family resorts to primitive tent pads at rustic parks. Sites at private RV parks near Granville may have full hookups or water and electric only, some may include cable, and most include picnic tables and fire rings. Common amenities include restrooms and showers, laundry, a dump station, propane refills, and WiFi near the office and common areas. Expect a family-heavy crowd on summer weekends, with activities aimed at kids and evening quiet hours enforced. Cell coverage is generally usable across the Welsh Hills, but expect some dead spots in the deeper valleys and inside Blackhand Gorge. Firewood is typically sold on-site, and bringing wood from outside the county is discouraged to limit the spread of tree pests.
