Campgrounds near Lakeside, Ohio
Lakeside sits on the Marblehead Peninsula on Lake Erie's south shore in Ottawa County, Ohio, with a cluster of RV-friendly campgrounds within a short drive. East Harbor State Park Campground is located at 1169 North Buck Road in Lakeside-Marblehead, placing the region's largest public campground within minutes of downtown Lakeside. It is the largest campground in the Ohio State Park system and offers full hookup, electric, non-electric, and ADA sites, plus two Sherman Cabins and group camping.
Just west of the peninsula on Catawba Island, Cedarlane RV Park sits near Port Clinton with easy reach to Sandusky, Put-in-Bay, and Cedar Point ferries. Closer options include Surf Motel and RV Campground in Marblehead and Kamp Kozy, both within a few miles of Lakeside proper.
For an island experience, Kelleys Islands State Park sits on Kelleys Island in the western basin of Lake Erie. The campground offers full-hookup, electric, and non-electric sites, with two furnished yurts and two Sherman Cabins as alternatives. The park is reached by ferry from Marblehead, roughly a 20-minute crossing.
Things to do near Lakeside
The peninsula packs a lot of activity into a small footprint. East Harbor features a 1,500-foot sand beach on Lake Erie, with swimming permitted in designated areas. Trail users have options too: multiple trails total more than 10 miles, and all trails are multi-use and allow hiking, biking, and snowmobiles. East Harbor also has a disc golf course near the Lockwood Shelterhouse.
Lake Erie is a fishing draw year-round and is known as the walleye capital of the world, with strong catches of yellow perch, bass, and catfish as well. Boaters can launch from East Harbor's marina, and campers registered at the park can use campground-only ramps.
On Kelleys Island, families ride bikes and rented golf carts to the Glacial Grooves, Inscription Rock, quiet beaches, and the small downtown. Birders visit East Harbor and the North Pond on Kelleys Island during spring and fall migration.

December - February
34° / 25°F 53 mmCold and windy; most campground utilities shut off
The Lake Erie shore has a short but intense camping season. East Harbor is open year-round, but utilities are available April 1 to November 1; from November 1 to April 1 only electric sites B1 through B64 stay open, with the dump station and water at the check-in office. Most private parks run a similar April-to-October window, and resort pool amenities typically run Memorial Day to Labor Day.
Summer weekends are the peak. Sites at East Harbor fill quickly on holiday weekends, and Kelleys Island bookings tighten further because ferry capacity for RVs is limited. Spring and fall bring cooler temperatures, strong birding along the migration corridor, and easier availability, though water utilities may be shut off outside the April to November window.
Kelleys Islands State Park campground closes for the winter season, and if ice forms on the lake the ferry stops running, so off-season access depends heavily on weather. Winter camping remains possible at East Harbor without full hookups, but expect cold, wind, and lake-effect snow.

How to book Lakeside campgrounds
Ohio's two state park campgrounds in the area use a single reservation system. Campers can reserve East Harbor's 563 campsites, including non-electric, electric, and full hookup sites, cabins, and yurts, via the Reserve Ohio website. Campsite reservations open at 7am, six months in advance, and all sites can be reserved online. Phone reservations for both East Harbor and Kelleys Islands State Park go through (866) 644-6727.
Campsites can book up fast, so reserve as early as possible for peak season and holiday weekends. For Kelleys Island, book the ferry crossing separately from Marblehead once the site is confirmed, and check RV length limits before reserving. Yurts and Sherman Cabins at the state parks are limited in number and tend to go first.
Private parks such as Cedarlane RV Park, Surf Motel and RV Campground, and Kamp Kozy are booked directly through each operator.
What to expect at Lakeside campgrounds
State park sites vary widely in shape and shade. At East Harbor, reviewers report level, tree-shaded sites in some loops and tighter, grid-style layouts in others, with a mix of full hookup, electric, and non-electric options. Campground Loops A and B have ADA-accessible campsites. A seasonal camp store, dump station, showerhouses, flush toilets, and free Wi-Fi for registered campers are on site.
Cedarlane RV Park leans resort-style, with 30/50 amp service, pull-through sites, pool areas, cabin rentals, a camp store, laundry, playground, and a fish cleaning facility. Surf Motel and RV Campground and Kamp Kozy are smaller operations closer to Lakeside itself.
On Kelleys Island, expect a slower pace. Site spacing is tight, cell coverage on the island is inconsistent, and most local travel is by bike or golf cart.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Lakeside, OH
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Lakeside, OH?
RV rental in Lakeside is more affordable than you might expect, especially compared to a Marblehead Peninsula hotel during Chautauqua season. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs range from $250 to $400 per night. For a cheap RV rental in Lakeside, book a travel trailer mid-week in May or September, when rates often drop 20 to 30 percent compared to peak July weekends. Pro tip: use the price filter on RVezy and message hosts about multi-night discounts. Many owners offer better weekly rates for week-long Chautauqua programs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakeside%2C%20OhioDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Lakeside, Ohio?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Lakeside, Ohio. Ohio does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal recreational vehicles, even larger Class A motorhomes, as long as you're driving them non-commercially. To book on RVezy, you'll need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and you'll verify your ID through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home-country license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is, you can be road-ready for the Marblehead Lighthouse in minutes.
bmv.ohio.gov/driver-license/dl/license-classes-restrictions-endorsementsWhat protection is included when I book an RV in Lakeside?
Every RVezy booking in Lakeside includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on enjoying Lake Erie sunsets instead of worrying about what-ifs. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV during your trip, giving you real financial peace of mind. During checkout, you choose your coverage level (not the host), so you can pick the plan that fits your comfort zone. Whether you are parked at East Harbor State Park or driving toward the islands ferry, you are covered. Pro tip: review the protection options side-by-side at booking, the upgraded tiers significantly lower your responsibility for damage.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Lakeside RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not the host), and every reservation includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your Lakeside Chautauqua week with confidence. If something unexpected comes up, like a Lake Erie storm warning, a family emergency, or a change of plans, the amount refunded depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. If a host cancels, you are refunded or offered travel credits. Pro tip: book early to secure pet-friendly and delivery-ready RVs around Marblehead, then use the grace period to finalize your dates. Reach out to RVezy support anytime if your plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Lakeside RV trip?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Lakeside options are plentiful on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers from hosts who genuinely welcome four-legged co-pilots. Lakeside itself is wonderfully dog-friendly outside the gated Chautauqua grounds during peak season, and the surrounding Marblehead Peninsula has tons to offer pups: East Harbor State Park has leashed-dog beach access at the swim beach pet area, and the trails at Lakefront Lodge and Johnson's Island are leash-friendly. Many local campgrounds, including Forest RV Park and Peninsula Motel & RV Park, accept dogs. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and whether they keep a bowl or leash hook ready, many do.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-harbor-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Lakeside?
Yes, RV delivery in Lakeside is one of the most popular options on the platform, and it is a game-changer if it is your first time renting an RV. Many Marblehead Peninsula hosts will tow or drive the rig directly to East Harbor State Park, a private campground, or even a driveway near the Chautauqua gate. They will level it, hook up water, sewer, and electric, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see which hosts offer it and their typical radius. Pro tip: ask for a setup at East Harbor State Park, you will wake up steps from the Lake Erie shoreline without ever needing to back in a trailer.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakeside%2C%20OhioHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Lakeside?
Hosts set their own mileage policies, and many Lakeside listings include a generous daily allowance, with some even offering RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips. From Lakeside, you're perfectly positioned for short, scenic drives: Cedar Point in Sandusky is about 25 minutes (15 miles), Put-in-Bay ferry at Catawba Island is 10 minutes (5 miles), Cleveland is around 75 minutes (70 miles), Toledo is about 60 minutes (55 miles), and Cuyahoga Valley National Park is roughly 90 minutes (85 miles). Pro tip: when you message a host, share your rough itinerary, many will raise the included mileage cap or quote a flat add-on if they know your plans upfront.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/byways/lake-erie-coastal-ohio-trailWhere are the best campgrounds near Lakeside, OH?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping Lakeside style. East Harbor State Park (about 5 minutes away) has 570+ sites with electric hookups, a swim beach, and miles of trail along Lake Erie's shore. Forest RV Park in Lakeside-Marblehead offers 100+ full-hookup sites with 50-amp service, a pool, and a camp store, open mid-April through mid-October. Peninsula Motel & RV Park on East Harbor Road is right next to East Harbor State Park with full hookups. Kelleys Island State Park (ferry access) is a bucket-list lake island stay. Pro tip: book East Harbor State Park 6 months ahead through the Ohio State Parks reservation system, summer weekends fill the same week reservations open.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-harbor-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for a Lakeside, OH RV trip?
Late May through mid-September is the sweet spot for a Lakeside RV trip, when daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit and Lake Erie warms up enough for swimming by late June. The Lakeside Chautauqua summer season runs roughly mid-June to Labor Day, with concerts, lectures, and shuffleboard tournaments daily. September and early October are an insider favorite, the crowds thin, lodging rates drop, and the peninsula's tree canopy turns brilliant gold and red. Winters here are cold (often 20s to 30s F) with lake-effect snow, so most local campgrounds close mid-October to mid-April. Pro tip: aim for the week after Labor Day for warm water, fewer people, and the best RV availability.
weather.gov/cle/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay around Lakeside?
You're going to do great, Lakeside is genuinely one of the most beginner-friendly RV destinations in Ohio. The Marblehead Peninsula has flat terrain, wide rural roads, and short driving distances between attractions, so first time renting an RV here feels nothing like wrangling a Class A through downtown Chicago. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, slide-outs, leveling, water systems, and dump procedure before you ever turn a key. If you'd rather skip the drive entirely, choose a delivery-included listing and your RV will arrive set up at your campsite. Pro tip: pick a Class C motorhome or smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they handle like a big van and are easy to back into East Harbor sites.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat happens if something breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Ohio State Route 2 or a dead battery near the Kelleys Island ferry is a phone call, not a trip-ender. Roadside help covers towing, tire changes, jump starts, lockouts, and fuel delivery. For anything mechanical or appliance-related (a finicky fridge, a stuck slide), message your host directly through the RVezy app, they know their rig best and can often talk you through a quick fix. RVezy support is also available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: snap photos of the propane shutoff and breaker panel locations during your walkthrough, it speeds up troubleshooting calls.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Lakeside rental on an RV road trip to other states or Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Lakeside is a fantastic way to use your rental, you're sitting right on the Lake Erie Coastal Ohio Trail with easy access to multiple states. Popular routes include heading east to Presque Isle in Erie, PA (about 2 hours), south to Hocking Hills State Park (about 3 hours), or west to Indiana Dunes National Park (about 3.5 hours). Cross-border trips to Canada (Niagara Falls is about 4 hours away) are sometimes allowed but require the host's written approval in advance for insurance reasons, so message them before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: confirm cross-border plans before you book so the host can flag it on the listing agreement.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/byways/lake-erie-coastal-ohio-trailWhat should I budget for fuel on a Lakeside RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, but a Lakeside RV trip is gentle on the wallet because distances are short. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get roughly 8 to 12 MPG, and Class A rigs and large trucks pulling fifth wheels average 6 to 10 MPG. Ohio gas prices typically run close to or just below the national average, and you'll find competitive pricing at stations in Port Clinton, Marblehead, and Sandusky. A typical 4-night Lakeside trip from Cleveland in a Class C usually costs $80 to $140 in fuel. Pro tip: top off in Port Clinton before heading onto the peninsula, prices there tend to beat the smaller stations closer to the lighthouse.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Lakeside?
For summer weekends, book 4 to 6 months ahead, Ohio State Parks like East Harbor and Kelleys Island open reservations exactly 6 months in advance through the ReserveOhio system (reserveohio.com), and the best lakeside loops fill within hours. Private parks like Forest RV Park and Peninsula Motel & RV Park also book up fast for July and Lakeside Chautauqua weeks. Mid-week stays in June or September are far easier and you can often book a few weeks out. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your target Friday night, log into ReserveOhio at 9:00 a.m. Eastern, and you'll have your pick of waterfront sites at East Harbor State Park.
reserveohio.com/What are driving conditions like around Lakeside and the Marblehead Peninsula?
Driving an RV around Lakeside is refreshingly easy. The peninsula is flat, roads like East Harbor Road and State Route 163 are wide and well-maintained, and traffic only gets noticeable on summer Friday evenings as visitors head to Cedar Point and the Put-in-Bay ferry. A few things to watch: the Thomas A. Edison Bridge to Sandusky has a 14-foot clearance which is fine for any standard RV, and downtown Marblehead has a couple of tight historic-village turns near the lighthouse where you'll want to slow down. Winter brings lake-effect snow and ice, so most renters stick to April through October. Pro tip: avoid Route 2 westbound between 5 and 7 p.m. on summer Sundays, take Route 163 through Oak Harbor instead.
transportation.ohio.gov/wps/portal/gov/odot/travelWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Lakeside?
Campgrounds near Lakeside are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. East Harbor State Park offers electric hookups (no full sewer on most sites), a dump station, potable water fill, hot showers, and a camp store. Forest RV Park and Peninsula Motel & RV Park both provide full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi in common areas. Kelleys Island State Park has electric sites and a dump station near the entrance. Cell signal is generally strong across the peninsula on major US carriers. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank at your campground before heading to Kelleys Island, ferry weight matters and most island sites have limited water fill access during peak summer weekends.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-harbor-state-parkWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Lakeside?
Lakeside motorhome rental and travel trailer listings on RVezy come stocked for a real vacation. Expect a queen or king bed, bunks or convertible dinette for kids, a fully equipped kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge, and basic cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, a furnace, and seatbelts for every traveling passenger. Most rigs include a TV, and many offer Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, and onboard generators for boondocking. Class B campervan rental Lakeside options are popular for couples, while Class C and travel trailers shine for families heading to Cedar Point. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list for things like a Blackstone griddle or kayak rack, ideal for grilling perch by the Marblehead Lighthouse at sunset.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/rv-safetyWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Lakeside RV rental?
Lakeside hosts offer a fantastic menu of add-ons to make your trip turn-key. Common options include delivery and setup, generator usage packages, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards (perfect for East Harbor's quiet inlets), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, propane refills, and linen and kitchen kits so you arrive with nothing to pack. Pickup is typically at the host's home with dropoff at the same location, though delivery to East Harbor State Park or other nearby campgrounds is widely available. Mileage policies vary by host and are clearly listed on each page. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a linen kit on your first rental, you will roll in, unpack groceries, and be on the beach within an hour.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Lakeside%2C%20OhioHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy at booking with a credit or debit card, no cash changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV class) shortly before your trip starts, and it is released after dropoff once the host confirms everything is in good shape. To avoid surprises, walk through the rig with your host at both pickup and return, take date-stamped photos of the interior, exterior, and odometer, and return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted in your agreement. Pro tip: empty your black and gray tanks at the East Harbor State Park dump station before returning, many hosts charge a dump fee otherwise.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the must-do day trips from Lakeside, OH?
A family RV trip Lakeside style is all about the day trips. Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky is 25 minutes away (15 miles) and tops most lists. Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island is a quick ferry from Catawba Point (about 5 miles to the dock) for wineries, Perry's Victory Memorial, and golf-cart cruising. Kelleys Island (ferry from Marblehead, 10 minutes by boat) has glacial grooves and quiet beaches. Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is about 75 minutes (70 miles) east. Magee Marsh, world-famous for spring warbler migration, is 35 minutes (25 miles) west. Pro tip: park your RV at East Harbor State Park, then take the Miller Ferry day trips, the parking saves you ferry vehicle fees that can run $40+ round trip.
