RV camping near Marblehead, Ohio
Marblehead sits at the tip of the Marblehead Peninsula on Ohio's Lake Erie shore, in Ottawa County. The village is best known for Marblehead Lighthouse, the oldest lighthouse in continuous operation on the Great Lakes, which has guided sailors along the rocky shores of Marblehead Peninsula since 1822, and it functions as a mainland base for ferry service to the Lake Erie Islands. The area draws RV travelers with a mix of state park campgrounds, private lakefront resorts, and quick access to Cedar Point in nearby Sandusky.
The closest full-service RV options cluster on the peninsula itself. The family campground at East Harbor is the largest in the Ohio State Park system and is conveniently located a short drive or bike ride from a family-friendly swimming beach on Lake Erie. Private grounds include Surf Motel and RV Campground and Kamp Kozy, while Camper Village Lighthouse Point sits at Cedar Point across the bay.
For island camping, the campground fills quickly between Memorial Day and Labor Day at Kelleys Island State Park, reached by ferry from Marblehead.
Things to do around Marblehead
Lake Erie access defines most trips. East Harbor State Park offers swimming, boating, fishing, multi-use trails, picnicking, and disc golf, plus a launch ramp for campers. Anglers target walleye, yellow perch, and smallmouth bass; Lake Erie is known as the walleye capital of the world.
Marblehead Lighthouse State Park anchors the peninsula's east end, with picnic grounds and seasonal tower tours. Ferries from the Marblehead area reach Kelleys Island, where campers find a swimming beach, a double-lane boat launch ramp and courtesy dock on the island's north shore, and hiking trails. Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island is a short additional hop.
Families with older kids typically pair a campground stay with Cedar Point in Sandusky, roughly a half-hour drive around the bay.

The main RV season runs from spring through mid-fall. Most amenities at Ohio state parks operate seasonally: at East Harbor, a seasonal camp store operates from April through October, selling firewood, ice, camping supplies, and ice cream, and the full utility season centers on the warmer months. The campground itself operates year-round on 1,831 acres near Lakeside Marblehead, offering full hookups, electric-only sites, and primitive options.
Summer is peak season. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill early, especially around Cedar Point openings and July 4th. Weekday arrivals and early-summer or post-Labor-Day stays offer more site choice and cooler nights. Fall brings mild days, thinner crowds, and quieter ferry runs.
The Kelleys Island State Park campground closes for the winter season. Ferry service between Marblehead and the islands is reduced outside the main season, so trip planning changes considerably once fall winds down.

How to book a campsite
Ohio State Parks use a single reservation system, ReserveOhio. Reservations are required for all sites and may be made six months in advance online or by calling (866) 644-6727. The six-month rolling window applies to both East Harbor State Park and Kelleys Island State Park; reservations open from 7am, six months in advance, and popular sites can book up fast, so booking as early as possible is wise for peak season or holiday weekends.
For summer weekends, plan to book close to the six-month mark. Holiday weekends at East Harbor and any full-hookup site at Kelleys Island are the first to go. Yurts and Sherman cabins have limited inventory.
Private options such as Surf Motel and RV Campground, Kamp Kozy, and Camper Village Lighthouse Point are booked directly through the operator. Cedar Point's Camper Village and Lighthouse Point tend to fill on Cedar Point event weekends.
What to expect on-site
East Harbor is a large, family-oriented state park campground. It offers a wide variety of camping options including 23 full hookup sites, over 350 electric sites, and nearly 200 primitive sites, and two Sherman Cabins (one ADA-accessible) and an ADA-accessible yurt are also available. Expect a bustling atmosphere in summer with kids on bikes, a busy beach, and a working boat ramp.
Amenities are consistent with a modern state park. The campground features modern amenities including flush toilets, hot showers, potable water, and a dump station, and free WiFi is available for registered campers. Sites vary in tree cover and spacing; the electric loops tend to be shadier than the open primitive loops.
Kelleys Island requires ferry planning for RVs and trailers, and vehicle space on the boat is limited. Camper Village Lighthouse Point at Cedar Point runs more like a resort, with beach access and paid park shuttles.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Marblehead, OH
How much does an RV rental in Marblehead cost?
RV rental in Marblehead is one of the most affordable ways to experience Lake Erie's Vacationland. On RVezy, travel trailers near Marblehead typically start around $90 to $150 per night, while Class C motorhomes generally run $175 to $300 per night, depending on size, age, and amenities. To find a cheap RV rental Marblehead option, book midweek stays in May or September, when Cedar Point crowds thin out. Use the price filter and sort by lowest to compare quickly. Pro tip: travel trailers are often the best value because many local hosts include delivery to East Harbor State Park, so you skip towing entirely and keep your trip budget in check.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Marblehead%2C%20OhioWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Marblehead, Ohio?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Marblehead. Ohio does not require a commercial driver's license (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for personal motorhomes or towable trailers used recreationally, no matter the class. To book on RVezy, you simply need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and you'll confirm your ID through the platform during checkout. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license. That's it, no DMV trips, no extra paperwork standing between you and the Marblehead Lighthouse.
bmv.ohio.gov/driver-licensing-id/dl/driver-licenseIs the RV protected if something happens during my trip?
Yes, every RVezy booking in Marblehead automatically includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the lake views instead of the what-ifs. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the RV during your rental, giving you real financial peace of mind without needing to buy a separate policy. During checkout, you choose from different protection plan tiers, so you decide the level of coverage that fits your trip. Whether you're parked at Marblehead Lighthouse State Park or driving the Lake Erie Coastal Trail, you're covered from pickup to drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Marblehead RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets and manages the cancellation policy on every reservation, not the individual host, so you get consistent, predictable terms across every listing in Marblehead. You can receive a full refund if you cancel within 24 hours of the host accepting your booking (provided the trip is more than 24 hours away). After that, refund amounts depend on how far out your trip is: cancel more than 30 days before the start date and you forfeit only RVezy's service fee and tax; cancel 8 to 30 days out and you forfeit 50% of the rental amount; cancel within 7 days and the rental amount is non-refundable. If the host cancels for any reason, you receive a full refund. Full details and natural disaster exceptions live in the RVezy Help Center, and support is available before and during your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Marblehead RV trip?
Absolutely, and Marblehead is a fantastic dog destination. To find a pet-friendly RV rental Marblehead hosts offer, just check the Pet-Friendly filter when you search on RVezy, and you'll see listings that welcome dogs (some hosts charge a small pet fee or extra cleaning fee, which is always shown upfront). Once you're here, East Harbor State Park has leashed-dog-friendly trails and a designated pet beach area on Lake Erie, and the grounds around Marblehead Lighthouse State Park are also leash-friendly for walks. Many local campgrounds, including East Harbor State Park's campground, allow pets at most sites. Pro tip: pack a long lead so your pup can splash in the shallow Sandusky Bay water.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-harbor-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Marblehead?
Yes, RV delivery Marblehead is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's perfect if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow the trailer or motorhome straight to East Harbor State Park, Forest RV Park in Lakeside Marblehead, or even a private lakefront driveway, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. To book it, use the Delivery filter, enter your campground address, and the listing will show the delivery fee based on distance. Pro tip: delivery is a game-changer for families heading to Cedar Point, because you skip the towing learning curve and go straight to vacation mode.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-harbor-state-parkHow far can I travel from Marblehead on an RV road trip?
Plenty far, and Marblehead sits in a sweet spot for a Lake Erie loop. From Marblehead, Cedar Point in Sandusky is about 15 miles away, Put-in-Bay (via the Miller Ferry from Catawba Island) is about a 10-mile drive plus a quick ferry, Cleveland and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is roughly 75 miles east, Toledo is about 60 miles west, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park is around 90 miles. Each host sets their own mileage policy, including some who offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a multi-stop Marblehead RV trip. Check the listing's mileage section before booking, and message the host with your route if you want a custom allowance.
nps.gov/cuva/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Marblehead to park my RV?
You have excellent options for RV camping Marblehead within a short drive of the lighthouse. East Harbor State Park, the largest campground in the Ohio State Park system, offers more than 550 campsites including non-electric, electric, and full-hookup sites, a swim beach, a boat launch, and miles of multi-use trails. Forest RV Park on East Harbor Road offers full-hookup seasonal and nightly sites with a pool, open mid-April through mid-October. Meadows by the Bay sits along Sandusky Bay with full hookups and large pull-throughs. Surf Motel and RV Campground in Marblehead offers full and partial hookup sites seasonally. Pro tip: book East Harbor as soon as the six-month reservation window opens for the best lakefront loops.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-harbor-state-park-campgroundWhen is the best time to visit Marblehead in an RV?
Late May through mid-September is the sweet spot, with daytime highs typically in the mid-70s to mid-80s Fahrenheit and Lake Erie warm enough for swimming by late June. July and August are peak season, when Marblehead's population swells with boaters and Cedar Point traffic, while June and September offer easier campground availability and lower nightly rates. Fall is genuinely special: late September into mid-October brings vineyard harvest season on the Lake Erie Shores & Islands wine trail and stunning foliage on the peninsula. Winters are cold with lake-effect snow, and most private campgrounds close by November. Pro tip: target the second week of September for warm water, fewer crowds, and grape-picking weather.
weather.gov/cle/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Marblehead?
You'll do great, and Marblehead is honestly one of the easier places to learn. Roads on the Marblehead Peninsula are flat, well-signed, and rarely congested outside July weekends, and the main route, State Route 163, is a straight two-lane road perfect for first-timers. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, and the propane and water systems before you take the keys. You can also message the host beforehand from the listing page with any questions. If towing makes you nervous, choose a Class C motorhome or simply book delivery and let the host handle the driving entirely. Pro tip: arrive at your campground before 4 p.m. for easier daylight parking.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/ohio-byways/lake-erie-coastal-trailWhat if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy rental in Marblehead includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the standard protection plan, covering things like tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. If something goes wrong, you call the roadside assistance line and they coordinate help to your location, whether you're on the Thomas A. Edison Memorial Bridge to Sandusky, parked at Marblehead Lighthouse, or heading to Put-in-Bay. RVezy customer support is also reachable before, during, and after the trip for non-roadside issues like host communication or booking questions. Cell coverage is strong across the Marblehead Peninsula, so help is always a quick call away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Marblehead RV rental into Canada or another state?
Yes to other states, and often yes to Canada, with one quick step. Most RVezy hosts allow interstate travel across Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and beyond, making an RV road trip from Marblehead to Niagara Falls (about 250 miles east) or Mackinaw City, Michigan (about 290 miles north) very doable. Cross-border trips into Canada (Windsor or the Niagara region) are sometimes allowed depending on the host and their insurance, so message the host before booking to confirm and request written approval in your reservation thread. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: bring your passport (or enhanced license) and the host's insurance card if heading north of the border.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Marblehead RV trip?
Fuel is one of the most predictable parts of your budget. Class C motorhomes near Marblehead average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg) on gas, while smaller travel trailers towed by your own truck or SUV pull mileage down to roughly 10 to 14 mpg. Campervans (Class B) are the efficiency champs at 15 to 20 mpg. Ohio gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, and you'll find convenient fill-ups at Circle K and Marathon stations along State Route 163 and U.S. Route 250 near Sandusky. For a relaxed week looping Marblehead, Put-in-Bay, and Cedar Point (under 200 driving miles), most renters spend $80 to $150 on fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Port Clinton, where prices are usually a few cents cheaper than on the peninsula.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Marblehead?
For peak summer weekends (mid-June through Labor Day), book your campsite 4 to 6 months ahead, especially for East Harbor State Park's lakefront loops, which fill quickly through the ReserveOhio system. Ohio State Parks open reservations on a rolling six-month window starting at 7 a.m., so set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your target arrival date. Private parks like Forest RV Park, Meadows by the Bay, and Surf Motel and RV Campground take direct reservations through their websites or by phone and tend to book up by April for holiday weekends. Shoulder-season trips (May, September, early October) can often be booked just 2 to 3 weeks out. Pro tip: midweek stays open up dramatically after Labor Day.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-harbor-state-park-campgroundWhat are driving conditions like around Marblehead?
Driving around Marblehead is refreshingly easygoing. The peninsula is flat (elevations around 580 to 600 feet), roads are straight, and the main artery, State Route 163, has wide lanes friendly to RVs up to 40 feet. Summer brings predictable traffic spikes on Friday afternoons heading toward Cedar Point and on Sunday evenings as boaters return, so plan arrivals for mid-morning or late evening. Watch for low-clearance areas near the historic downtown (most local bridges clear 13 feet 6 inches, but always check your RV's height card from the host). Winter brings lake-effect snow squalls from November through March. Pro tip: the Thomas A. Edison Memorial Bridge gets gusty, so reduce speed if you're towing a tall trailer.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/ohio-byways/lake-erie-coastal-trailWhat hookups and amenities will I find at Marblehead campgrounds?
Most Marblehead-area campgrounds are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. East Harbor State Park offers 30 and 50 amp electric hookups at many sites, a dump station, potable water at the check-in office, plus a camp store, swim beach, showers, and free WiFi for registered campers. Utilities are available April 1 through November 1, with select electric sites (B1 through B64) open year-round. Forest RV Park provides full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50 amp electric) along with a pool and playground. Meadows by the Bay and Surf Motel and RV Campground both offer full hookups with pull-through options. To know where to park an RV in Marblehead with full hookups versus electric-only, check the campground's site map before booking. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank at the check-in office before claiming your site, it saves a trip back.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-harbor-state-park-campgroundWhat should I expect inside the RV I rent in Marblehead?
You'll be impressed by how home-like modern rentals feel. A typical motorhome rental Marblehead listing on RVezy includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds (sleeping 4 to 8), a full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, microwave, and sink, and a private bathroom with a shower and toilet. Most also feature air conditioning, a furnace, a TV, and many include WiFi hotspots or onboard generators, which is perfect for warm Lake Erie July afternoons. Class B campervan rental Marblehead options are more compact but still include a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Every RV must have seatbelts for the number of guests it sleeps. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity icons and message the host if you need specifics like a coffee maker or outdoor grill.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/seat-beltsWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Marblehead?
Hosts in the Marblehead area offer a great range of add-ons to make your trip turnkey. Common extras include linen and bedding kits ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, outdoor chairs and tables, bikes or kayaks (handy for paddling Sandusky Bay), generators, and even pre-stocked propane. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Marblehead, Port Clinton, Sandusky, or Catawba Island, and many offer delivery to East Harbor State Park or your rental cottage. Mileage policies vary: some listings include 100 free miles per day, others offer unlimited miles for a slightly higher nightly rate. Each listing spells everything out clearly. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a kayak add-on, and your family steps straight into vacation mode at the campsite.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/find-a-property/east-harbor-state-parkHow does payment and the security deposit work for my Marblehead RV rental?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure: you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card at booking, and your money is held safely until your trip begins, no cash or off-platform transactions needed. A refundable security deposit is collected separately (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV), automatically authorized about 3 days before pickup, and released after drop-off once the host confirms the RV came back in the same condition. To avoid any deposit issues, take date-stamped photos of the interior and exterior at both pickup and return, follow the host's fuel and dump-station instructions, and clean up after yourself. Pro tip: a quick rinse at the East Harbor dump station before drop-off keeps everyone happy and your deposit refund quick.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Marblehead during the winter?
You can, and winter on the Marblehead Peninsula is a quiet, beautiful adventure if you come prepared. Lake-effect snow and temperatures from the teens to low 30s Fahrenheit are normal December through March, so look for RVezy listings labeled four-season or with heated holding tanks, an enclosed underbelly, and a reliable furnace. Most private campgrounds (Forest RV Park, Surf Motel and RV Campground, Meadows by the Bay) close mid-October to mid-April, but East Harbor State Park keeps electric sites B1 through B64 open year-round, and you'll have the lighthouse views nearly to yourself. Message the host before booking to confirm winter readiness and shore-power compatibility. Pro tip: catch the ice fishing shanties on Sandusky Bay in February, it's a uniquely Ohio bucket-list experience.
