Campgrounds near Massieville, Ohio
Massieville sits in Ross County just south of Chillicothe in the Scioto River valley, putting RV travellers within a short drive of several state parks in the Appalachian foothills of southern Ohio. The terrain here is hilly and wooded, a transition zone between glaciated plains to the north and west and the sandstone ridges of the Appalachian Plateau to the south and east.
The closest public option is Scioto Trail State Park, a 218-acre park set inside the much larger Scioto Trail State Forest south of Chillicothe. Great Seal State Park lies north of Chillicothe on hilly, forested terrain named for the landscape depicted on the Ohio state seal. Ross Hollow at Tar Hollow State Park sits east in one of Ohio's largest state forests, with paved sites tucked into a wooded hollow.
Private options round out the area. Walnut Creek Campground and Resort and Lake Hill Campground both operate near Chillicothe, giving RVers a mix of full-hookup private parks and rustic state-park loops within roughly a half-hour of Massieville.
Things to do near Massieville
Hiking is the main draw. Trails at Scioto Trail State Park climb ridgetops with views over the Scioto River valley, while the Ross Hollow Hiking Trail at Tar Hollow State Park is a 3.5-mile yellow-blazed loop with moderate terrain, and the 21-mile Logan Backpack Trail traverses the park and adjacent forest. A section of the Buckeye Trail also passes through the Tar Hollow area.
Water activities centre on small lakes. Caldwell Lake at Scioto Trail State Park offers boating for hand-powered vessels and electric motors, plus fishing and swimming, and Pine Lake at Tar Hollow has a 500-foot beach within walking distance of the campgrounds. Bluegill, bass, catfish and trout are common catches, and a valid Ohio fishing license is required for anglers 16 and older.
History-minded travellers can explore the Hopewell mound sites and museums in nearby Chillicothe, Ohio's first state capital.

Southern Ohio has a humid climate with long, warm summers and short, cold winters. Summer is peak camping season, with warm days, humid nights and the busiest weekends at Scioto Trail, Tar Hollow and Great Seal. Weekend sites at the electric loops fill early, especially around Memorial Day, Independence Day and Labor Day.
Spring brings wildflowers to the hillsides at Tar Hollow, with dogwoods and redbuds coloring the ravines, though trails can be muddy and rain is frequent. Fall is prime for colour, with a spectacular hardwood display through October across the Scioto and Tar Hollow forests; nights turn cold and bookings drop off after peak leaf weekends.
Winter access varies. Ohio State Parks note that most campgrounds reduce sites and amenities from November through March, and full-hookup sites often shift to electric-only during the coldest months. Ice fishing is possible on Caldwell Lake when conditions allow, and quiet-season stays reward campers willing to plan around limited services.
How to book a campground near Massieville
Ohio state park campgrounds, including Scioto Trail, Great Seal and Tar Hollow, are managed by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources through the ReserveOhio system. Reservations can be made online at reserveohio.com or by phone at 866-644-6727. Reservations are required at all Ohio state park campgrounds, and Ohio does not charge state-park entrance fees.
Standard campsite reservations open up to six months in advance, with lodges and cabins bookable up to one year ahead. Great Seal State Park's primitive walk-in sites are reservable through the same system.
Private parks such as Walnut Creek Campground and Resort and Lake Hill Campground take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines. Book summer weekends and October fall-colour weekends well ahead.
What to expect at campgrounds near Massieville
Expect a mix of rustic state-park loops and full-service private resorts. Scioto Trail State Park's Caldwell Lake Campground offers electric and non-electric sites, with a dump station and pressurized water, but no showers. Ross Hollow at Tar Hollow offers 28 paved sites with 50-amp electric and water hookups, plus hot showers, a dump station and laundry nearby. Great Seal is primitive: 15 walk-in sites arranged around a grass hill near Sugarloaf Mountain, with pressurized water and vault latrines, and no hookups.
Sites at state parks are wooded and set on hilly terrain, so longer rigs should confirm site length and manoeuvring room before booking. Pets are allowed on leash at the state parks noted, but not on swimming beaches.
Cell coverage is workable but uneven in the hollows. Firewood is often sold on-site or at nearby stands; bringing outside firewood is discouraged to limit pest spread.
