Campgrounds and RV parks near Oak Hill, OH

Water activities anchor most trips. Jackson Lake supports a 200-foot swimming beach, fishing, and an ADA-accessible boat launch. Non-powered watercraft and boats with electric motors only are permitted on Lake Alma. Bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish are common catches on both lakes. The Ohio River, reached at Holiday Point Marina, opens up powered boating and larger-water fishing. On land, a 2.5-mile hiking trail winds through the woodlands at Jackson Lake, and three picnic shelters are available for day use. Lake Alma adds a paved bike path circling the lake, a dog swim area, and connections to the surrounding Vinton County forests. Nearby attractions include Buckeye Furnace State Memorial, the Leo Petroglyphs, and the Hocking Hills region to the north.

The two nearest state park campgrounds run on different calendars. Jackson Lake State Park Campground is open seasonally from April through December, with reservations required through ReserveOhio.com and no walk-in or self-registration available. Lake Alma State Park Campground operates year-round, so it is the option for late-winter and early-spring trips when Jackson Lake is closed. Summer weekends and holiday periods fill quickly at both state parks, and site turnover is limited. The ReserveOhio system opens campsite reservations six months prior to the desired arrival date, so peak dates should be locked in as soon as the window opens. Fall brings cooler nights, hardwood color across the Appalachian Plateau, and lower campground occupancy through October and November. Winter camping is possible at Lake Alma, and under the right conditions ice skating and ice fishing are possible on the lake. Expect vault toilets and reduced services during shoulder months, as showers and flush facilities are typically winterized.

State park sites in this area lean rustic. Jackson Lake offers 34 electric sites with 50-amp service, fire rings and picnic tables, vault toilets, potable water, and a dump station. Lake Alma has a mix of full-hookup, electric, and non-electric sites plus a shower house, with a paved loop that stays walkable for kids and bikes. Sites at both state parks are known to be close together and small, creating limited privacy, and some campers report noise carrying between sites on busy weekends. Cell service is spotty across this part of the Appalachian Plateau, so download maps and reservations in advance. Pack for insects and variable weather: bring bug spray, layers, and rain gear. Do not bring firewood from outside Ohio; buy locally to help protect the surrounding hardwood forest from invasive pests.
