Camping near Pickerington, Ohio
Pickerington sits in Fairfield County just southeast of Columbus, putting RV travelers within a short drive of lakes, state parks, and full-service private campgrounds. The surrounding terrain is gently rolling farmland and woodlots typical of Ohio's glaciated till plain, with several reservoirs and small state parks scattered across the region.
Options close to town range from family-focused private parks with pools and cabins to quieter state-park campgrounds on stocked lakes. Jackson Lake Park and Lancaster RV Campground offer convenient bases for exploring the Pickerington area, while Buckeye Lake, a large reservoir east of the capital city, draws boaters and anglers to the Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA Holiday nearby.
For a more natural setting, AW Marion State Park sits about an hour south near Circleville and wraps around 145-acre Hargus Lake. Lakeview RV Park and Campground rounds out the nearby choices for travelers who want hookups without driving far from Interstate 70 or US 33.
Things to do near Pickerington
Water activities anchor most trips in this area. Hargus Lake at AW Marion State Park allows hand-powered vessels and boats with electric motors, and anglers target largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. Buckeye Lake, by contrast, permits powerboats, making it the regional draw for boating and water sports.
On land, AW Marion has approximately four miles of hiking trails and multiple picnicking locations, plus a designated off-leash lake access area for dogs. Families staying at the Buckeye Lake KOA can use the on-site pool, which opens Memorial Day weekend, along with mini golf, an inflatable jumping pad, and a weekend recreation program that runs through the warm season.
Columbus attractions are close: the zoo, science center, and the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington itself all work as easy day trips. Dawes Arboretum, Hocking Hills State Park, and the shops around Lancaster and Circleville add more options within an hour's drive.

Central Ohio's main RV season runs from spring through fall. AW Marion State Park Campground operates seasonally from late March through early November, with reservations available through ReserveOhio. Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA Holiday operates from April 1 through November 1, and most of its recreational amenities are available across that window, with the pool opening Memorial Day weekend.
Summer is peak season. Weekends around Independence Day and Labor Day fill first, and popular sites at state parks are often gone months ahead. Late spring and early fall are quieter and cooler, and fall foliage in the surrounding hills typically peaks in mid to late October.
Winter camping options are limited. Most water systems are winterized from November through March, so RVers traveling in the cold months should confirm which loops remain open, plan for dry camping, and expect freezing overnight temperatures throughout the region.

How to book campgrounds near Pickerington
State park sites go through ReserveOhio, the state's central booking portal at reserveohio.com. Reservations can be made for today's date and up to six months in advance, and can also be arranged by phone through the state reservation call center at (866) 644-6727, open 7am to 7pm daily. Popular summer weekends at AW Marion State Park often sell out soon after the six-month window opens.
Private parks book directly. Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA Holiday takes reservations through the KOA website or by phone, and holiday weekends fill early. Jackson Lake Park, Lancaster RV Campground, and Lakeview RV Park and Campground each handle their own bookings and typically release inventory well ahead of summer.
For peak weekends, aim to book two to three months out at minimum. Midweek stays and shoulder-season trips are usually available closer to arrival.
What to expect at Pickerington campgrounds
Sites in the region are a mix of full-hookup, electric-only, and non-electric. AW Marion State Park offers 58 campsites along the shores of 145-acre Hargus Lake, with 29 sites carrying 50-amp electric hookups and the remainder non-electric. State-park sites include a fire ring and picnic table, plus access to flush restrooms, vault latrines, and a dump station. There are no water or sewer hookups at individual sites.
Private parks lean toward big-rig friendly setups. The Buckeye Lake KOA offers long, level pull-through sites, full and partial hookups, cabins, and a primitive tent area, with easy on and off access from Interstate 70.
Expect wooded or partially shaded sites at most locations, mosquitoes near lakes in midsummer, and occasional muddy pads after heavy rain. Cell coverage is generally strong across Fairfield and Licking counties.

experiencecolumbus.com/things-to-do/sports/ohio-state-buckeyes/What license do I need to rent an RV in Pickerington, Ohio?
Good news, a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Pickerington. Ohio does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement for personal-use motorhomes or travel trailers. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally required to be at least 25 years old, and your ID is verified through the platform during checkout, so there's no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring your home driver's license plus an International Driving Permit. With requirements this simple, most first-time renters are surprised how quickly they're on the road toward Hocking Hills.

Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see which Pickerington hosts offer this service and what their delivery radius and fees look like. ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/reserve-a-place-to-stayWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Pickerington?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot. May through October offers the most reliable weather for a Pickerington RV trip, with daytime highs from 70°F in May to the mid-80s in July and August, then cooling into the 60s and 70s for stunning fall foliage in October. Hocking Hills is especially magical in mid-October when the hardwoods peak. Summer brings occasional thunderstorms, so build flex into your itinerary. Shoulder seasons (late April or early November) mean fewer crowds and lower nightly rates, while a few hosts even keep four-season rigs available for winter trips to see frozen waterfalls at Old Man's Cave. Check the forecast a few days out and you're set.
weather.gov/iln/I've never rented an RV before. Is renting in Pickerington beginner-friendly?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Pickerington is honestly easier than most people expect. Every host on RVezy provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, tanks, propane, and driving tips, so you're never left guessing. The roads around Pickerington are flat and forgiving, with wide lanes on US-33 and Refugee Road, making it a great place to get comfortable behind the wheel before heading into Hocking Hills' hillier terrain. If driving still feels intimidating, choose a host who offers delivery and skip the driving entirely. Pro tip: filter by smaller Class C motorhomes or campervans for your first trip, they handle much more like a standard truck or van.
transportation.ohio.gov/programs/highway-safety/safety-tipsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or roadside issue on my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Pickerington, OH through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tow service. If something goes wrong on I-70 heading to Columbus, or out on the winding roads through Hocking Hills, one phone call gets help dispatched. Pro tip: snap a photo of the RV's VIN and roadside assistance number before you leave the host's driveway so you have it handy if you ever need it. Most renters never use it, but it's reassuring to have.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Pickerington RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcomed and easy. Most hosts in Pickerington are happy for you to cross into Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, or Michigan, which opens up routes like the Great Smoky Mountains (about 6 hours south) or Niagara Falls (about 5.5 hours northeast). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message the listing directly to confirm before you book if Canada is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: keep a paper copy of your rental agreement in the glove box for any border crossing, it makes things smoother.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Budgeting is straightforward once you know the ranges. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 MPG, Class C motorhomes deliver 10 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A coaches average 7 to 10 MPG. Most travel trailers don't burn fuel themselves, but your tow vehicle will see a 25 to 35 percent drop in MPG. Ohio gas prices around Pickerington typically run slightly below the national average, and you'll find affordable stations along Refugee Road, Hill Road, and at the Pilot off I-70 in nearby Hebron. For a weekend Hocking Hills loop (roughly 150 miles), expect $50 to $90 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up before leaving the metro, rural Ohio stations can run a bit higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Pickerington?
Sooner is better, especially for summer. Ohio State Parks open campground reservations exactly six months ahead through the ReserveOhio system, and prime weekends at Alum Creek and Hocking Hills can sell out within hours of the booking window opening. For July and August stays, aim to book in January or February. Private parks like Buckeye Lake KOA and Cross Creek Camping Resort typically open earlier and have a bit more flexibility. Weekday stays and shoulder-season trips (May or September) are easier to grab last minute. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly 6 months before your desired arrival date, log in 30 seconds before the booking window opens, and you'll have your pick of sites.
ohiodnr.gov/go-and-do/plan-a-visit/reserve-a-place-to-stayWhat are driving conditions like around Pickerington?
Driving here is genuinely friendly, even in a large motorhome. Pickerington sits in flat-to-rolling terrain east of Columbus with well-maintained four-lane roads like US-33, SR-204, and Refugee Road. The biggest things to watch are I-270 rush-hour traffic (4 to 6 PM weekdays) and the winding two-lane sections on SR-664 into Hocking Hills, where you'll want to take it slow. Winter (December through February) can bring snow and ice, so check ODOT's OHGO traffic map before heading out. Summer thunderstorms can roll in fast, especially in late afternoon. Pro tip: avoid downtown Columbus in a big rig, several bridges along High Street have low clearances, and the I-270 outerbelt is a much easier route.
ohgo.com/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Pickerington?
Most campgrounds in the area are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Alum Creek State Park offers electric hookups at every site, dump stations, potable water fills, hot showers, and a camp store. Buckeye Lake KOA has full hookups (water, sewer, 30/50-amp electric), Wi-Fi, a pool, and propane refills on site. Hocking Hills State Park Campground provides electric sites, modern restrooms, and a dump station near the entrance. For overnight pit stops on the Ohio Turnpike, eight service plazas offer dedicated RV parking with electric and dump stations for a $20 fee. Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving Pickerington at the Travel America in nearby Hebron, it has a free dump and fill station for paying customers.
ohioturnpike.org/travelers/service-plazas/overnight-parking-for-rvs-and-travel-trailersWhat features and amenities come with a typical Pickerington RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Pickerington comes with a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control via roof AC and propane furnace, a dinette that converts to extra sleeping space, and seatbelted seats for safe travel. Many listings also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and onboard generator for boondocking. Wi-Fi is sometimes available as a host add-on, and listings clearly note sleeps count so you can match the RV to your family size. Pro tip: filter by sleeps count and review the listing's amenity icons carefully, every host details exactly what's included.
rvia.org/rv-typesWhat add-ons and pickup options do hosts in Pickerington offer?
Hosts make customizing your trip easy. Popular add-ons for a campervan rental in Pickerington and larger motorhomes include kitchen kits ($25 to $50), bedding and linen packs ($25 to $50), camp chairs and outdoor mats, bike racks, generators, and portable grills. For pickup, most hosts are based within 20 minutes of central Pickerington, with several near Reynoldsburg, Canal Winchester, and east Columbus. Mileage policies vary, but typical allowances are 100 to 150 miles per day, with options to pre-purchase extra miles or unlimited mileage for longer road trips. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during checkout rather than adding them later, hosts often offer better combined pricing on accessory packages booked upfront.
experiencecolumbus.com/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and transparent. When you book your motorhome rental in Pickerington through RVezy, you pay securely on the platform using a credit or debit card, no cash exchanges with the host. A refundable security deposit is collected separately from your booking payment and typically ranges from $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value, shown clearly on the listing before you confirm. The deposit is released back to your card after the host confirms the RV is returned in good condition. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick video walkaround at pickup and return, follow the fuel and tank-emptying instructions, and report any small issues right away.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV in Pickerington if I'm not at a campground?
You've got a few solid options for in-town stops. The Cracker Barrel on Winderly Lane in Pickerington is well-known for allowing one-night RV parking with permission from the manager, perfect for a quick overnight before heading out. Local ordinances in Pickerington restrict long-term street parking of RVs in residential districts, so plan to stage longer stays at a nearby campground like Buckeye Lake KOA or Alum Creek State Park. The Ohio Turnpike also offers paid overnight RV parking with hookups at eight service plazas across the state. Pro tip: always call ahead to confirm overnight permission at any business lot, and avoid extending slides or awnings, those are reserved for actual campgrounds.
