The surrounding Appalachian foothills of southern Ohio hold a dense network of state forests, small lakes, and hardwood ridges that shape most of the camping options in the area.
Rockwater Campground and Big Bear Lake Family Resort are among the closest full-service options, with Walnut Creek Campground and Resort adding another private choice within easy reach. For a public-land experience, Scioto Trail State Park is a 218-acre state park just south of Chillicothe, nestled within the 9,000-acre Scioto Trail State Forest in Ross County. Long's Retreat Family Resort, west of Piketon near Latham, rounds out the mix with a resort-style property.
Together, these campgrounds cover the typical range an RV renter needs: electric and full-hookup pads, primitive tent areas, and cabin rentals for mixed groups.
Things to do near Piketon
Water recreation anchors most trips. Caldwell Lake at Scioto Trail State Park holds bluegill, bass, catfish, and trout, with a valid Ohio fishing license required for anglers 16 and older. Big Bear Lake Family Resort and Rockwater Campground also lean on lakefront swimming and fishing.
Families traveling with kids often build a day around Long's Retreat Family Resort. The property covers over 400 acres of Southern Ohio's scenic hills and features a swimming beach and splash pad, canoes and paddle boats, waterslides, miniature golf, go karts, a kiddie train, bounce houses, basketball, tennis, and an arcade.
Off-site, hikers use the Scioto Trail State Forest road and trail network, while history-focused travelers visit Serpent Mound and the Hopewell Culture National Historical Park near Chillicothe.

The core RV season in southern Ohio runs from spring through late fall. Long's Retreat Family Resort operates from April 1 to October 31, and most private resorts near Piketon follow a similar April-to-late-October window. Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day weekends draw the heaviest bookings and often sell out weeks in advance.
Spring brings green-up and steady rain, with forest trails lined by flowering dogwood and redbud. Summer is warm and humid, and lakes reach peak use for swimming and paddling. Fall delivers cooler nights and hardwood color across the ridges, making September and October a popular quieter window.
Winter camping is limited. Scioto Trail State Park itself remains open year round, though facilities scale back and under the proper winter conditions, visitors can enjoy ice fishing. Most private resorts close for the season, so RV renters planning a late-fall or winter trip should confirm which loops, restrooms, and dump stations remain open before booking.

Shirley was amazing to work with!! We had rented another camper from a different host (Joey) on this site and when we arrived at the campsite there was no camper! Shirley swooped in in the eleventh hour to save us! She bent over backwards to accommodate us so our weekend wasn’t ruined!! Her communication was top notch and the camper was exactly what we needed! THANK YOU SHIRLEY!!! Highly recommend!

How to book campgrounds near Piketon
State park sites use Ohio's centralized reservation system. Reservations are required and can be made online or by calling (866) 644-6727. For Scioto Trail State Park, reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to six months in advance.
Private resorts, including Rockwater Campground, Big Bear Lake Family Resort, Long's Retreat Family Resort, and Walnut Creek Campground and Resort, take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Long's Retreat, for example, accepts reservations for its cabins, while campsite policies vary by property. Holiday weekends and prime summer Saturdays should be locked in as early as possible, with midweek and shoulder-season stays typically available on shorter notice.
What to expect
Expect wooded, hilly terrain with a mix of gravel and dirt pads. State park sites tend to be shaded and rustic: the family-sized wooded campground near Caldwell Lake at Scioto Trail offers electric campsites, the camp area near Steward Lake offers primitive, hike-in sites, pets are permitted on all sites, and vault latrines, pressurized water, a dump station, fire rings, and picnic tables are provided. Larger rigs should check site length and low branches before committing.
Private resorts offer more hookups and family amenities but can be busy on summer weekends. Cell coverage is spotty in the hollows, which some visitors treat as a plus for unplugging. Bring drinking water, insect repellent, and a plan for groceries before turning off the main highway.
