Campgrounds and RV parks near Stoutsville, OH

Water recreation anchors most trips. Hargus Lake at AW Marion State Park provides 145 acres of water with boat launching, public docks, and boat rentals; electric motors only are permitted, and anglers target largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, and channel catfish. Hiking is strongest in the Tar Hollow area. The park offers the Ross Hollow Hiking Trail near the campground and the 21-mile Logan Backpack Trail, both of which enter the surrounding state forest. A section of the blue-blazed Buckeye Trail also passes through the area, and there are roughly 25 miles of white-blazed bridle trails plus a 2.5-mile mountain bike trail. At Jackson Lake Park, all sites are within walking distance of the amenities, and campsite reservations include use of the lake with a signed waiver, disc golf, planned activities, and a swimming pool, which suits families with kids.

Ohio state park campgrounds in this area operate on extended calendars, though usage is heavily seasonal. AW Marion State Park lists its campground as open year round, and Tar Hollow's campground also stays open through winter, though full services concentrate in the warm months. Private parks vary: Jackson Lake Park treats October through April as its off-season, with the lake and pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day. Spring brings wildflowers and rising water. Dogwoods, redbuds, and a variety of wildflowers color the hillsides, and fall's color across the Tar Hollow ridges is a well-known draw. Spring and fall are also Ohio's wildfire seasons in the state forests, so open fires outside developed sites should be checked against current conditions. Summer weekends fill fastest. The Tar Hollow campground fills quickly during the summer months, and peak demand runs from April into October. Winter camping is possible at state park loops but expect limited water service and cold overnight lows.

Facilities vary widely between public and private options. The AW Marion campground offers electric and non-electric sites and a dump station, and this small, pet-friendly campground has flush restrooms, ball courts, and a camp store as well as vault latrines. At Tar Hollow, Ross Hollow sites are paved while Logan Hollow sites are not, and the Logan Hollow sites can get muddy after extended rain. Connectivity is limited in the state forest. Cell reception inside Tar Hollow is weak or absent for many carriers, so plan on downloading maps before arrival. The Tar Hollow camp office and store is generally open Friday through Sunday with basic supplies, firewood, and pedal boat and bicycle rental. Quiet hours are enforced at state park loops from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM, with a maximum of two vehicles per site; a camping trailer or motorhome counts as one vehicle.
