Campgrounds near Thurston, Ohio
Thurston is a small village in Fairfield County in central Ohio, positioned between Lancaster to the south and Buckeye Lake to the north. The location puts RV travelers within a short drive of two distinct camping regions: the lakefront parks around Buckeye Lake, a large reservoir popular for boating and fishing, and the wooded private campgrounds along the US 33 corridor toward Lancaster and the Hocking Hills.
The closest developed RV base is Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA Holiday, a wooded, family-oriented park roughly 1.5 miles off Interstate 70. South of Thurston, Lancaster RV Campground and Lakeview RV Park and Campground sit near the US 22 and US 33 corridor, providing full-hookup access to the Lancaster area.
Additional options include Jackson Lake Park in Canal Winchester, a mid-sized family campground with RV sites, tent sites, cabins, and a lake, and The Grove By The River for travelers looking for a smaller riverside stay. Together these parks cover most RV configurations, from big-rig pull-throughs to tent-friendly sites.
Things to do near Thurston
Buckeye Lake is the dominant draw north of Thurston. Anglers target perch, bluegill, crappie, largemouth bass, and channel catfish, and boating, water skiing, and swimming are all standard on the lake. Cranberry Bog State Nature Preserve, a National Natural Landmark, is a floating sphagnum island reachable only by boat with a permit from the state.
Day trips from the Buckeye Lake KOA reach Columbus attractions easily. The Columbus Zoo, The Wilds preserve for endangered animals in nearby Cumberland, and COSI science center are all within driving range. Families staying at Jackson Lake Park have on-site swimming, disc golf, fishing, and a game room, while the Hocking Hills state parks lie a short drive south for hiking and waterfalls.

Winter camping options in the immediate area are limited, so cold-weather travelers should confirm hours directly with each operator.
Summer is peak season. Weekends around Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day book out early at lakefront and family-oriented parks, and Buckeye Lake sees heavy boat traffic through July and August. Late spring brings the wettest stretch of the year, with May recording the highest average rainfall in Lancaster.

How to book
Reservation systems vary by operator. Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA Holiday takes bookings through the KOA website, app, and call center, with KOA Rewards members receiving a member discount at checkout. Jackson Lake Park uses Campspot for online reservations, and its site map shows RV sites, tent sites, cabins, pool, and lake areas that guests can select during booking. Lancaster RV Campground, Lakeview RV Park and Campground, and The Grove By The River are booked directly through the operators.
For nearby state park campgrounds, Ohio State Parks use the ReserveOhio system, which opens the booking window 6 months ahead of arrival and accepts same-day reservations subject to availability. Popular holiday weekends fill early, so confirm rig length, hookup type, and pet rules with each park before arrival.
What to expect
Expect a mix of family resort-style parks and quieter, smaller RV campgrounds. Buckeye Lake / Columbus East KOA Holiday sits on about 40 acres with mature trees, a pool open Memorial Day through Labor Day, mini golf, shuffleboard, and a fenced dog area. Personal golf carts require a signed release waiver and a permit to operate on the property, which is common at lake-area campgrounds.
Site surfaces are typically gravel or grass, and full hookups with 30 and 50 amp service are widely available at the KOA and other private parks. Cell coverage is generally solid across Fairfield County, and grocery, fuel, and RV supply stops are easy to find along US 33 and I-70. Summer humidity and thunderstorms are routine, so plan awnings and outdoor gear accordingly.
