Campgrounds and RV parks near West Union, OH

The headline attraction is Serpent Mound, a National Historic Landmark near Peebles and the largest surviving serpent effigy mound in the world, sitting on a bluff above Ohio Brush Creek. The Edge of Appalachia Preserve protects roughly 20,000 acres of forests, prairies, and rock formations with hiking trails and rare plant communities, and the smaller Chaparral Prairie State Nature Preserve showcases a remnant prairie ecosystem. Water and trail options run south into Shawnee State Park and Shawnee State Forest, where Turkey Creek Lake and Roosevelt Lake support fishing, swimming, and boating, and the adjacent forest carries more than 70 miles of bridle trails plus a long backpack loop system. Adams Lake State Park on the edge of West Union adds a quieter lake for kayaking and shoreline walks, and the Wheat Ridge Amish community offers bakeries, furniture shops, and markets.

Late spring through early fall is the core RV season around West Union. April through June brings wildflower blooms in the Edge of Appalachia and Chaparral Prairie preserves, and Shawnee State Park runs an annual trout derby at Turkey Creek Lake on the fourth Saturday in April. Summer weekends fill up quickly at Shawnee, so booking well ahead is wise for July and August stays. Autumn is a strong shoulder season. The Appalachian foothills carry a long hardwood color window from early October through early November, and cooler nights make hiking the backpack loops and bridle trails more comfortable. Hunting is not permitted inside Shawnee State Park itself, but it is allowed in the adjacent Shawnee State Forest during posted seasons, so check dates if traveling with pets or hiking off-trail. Winter camping is possible but limited. Some private parks close or reduce services, temperatures routinely drop below freezing, and hilly roads can be icy. Confirm which loops and hookups are open before booking a December through February trip.

Roads into the campgrounds are rural and often narrow, with grades and sharp curves as you approach Shawnee State Forest. Larger Class A rigs and long fifth wheels should plan routes carefully and avoid shortcuts through the forest interior, where some roads are gravel and steep. Hookups vary. The Ohio River Campground at Shawnee offers electric sites with level gravel pads, while parts of the Turkey Creek campground include non-electric sites. Private parks near West Union commonly offer full hookups, but amenities like laundry, camp stores, and reliable Wi-Fi are inconsistent, so plan for basic services. Wildlife is active in the region, including deer, black vultures, and copperheads in warmer months. Store food securely, watch where you step on trails, and bring insect repellent for late spring and summer. Firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving pests.
