Clinton camping overview
Clinton sits on Interstate 40 in western Oklahoma, along historic Route 66 and roughly halfway between Oklahoma City and the Texas Panhandle. The location makes it a practical base for RV travelers crossing the Southern Plains, with a mix of highway-adjacent RV parks in town and lake-based state park camping within a short drive.
Options closest to town include Atchley's Route 66 RV Park and Water-Zoo Campground, which sits next to the Water-Zoo Clinton Indoor Water Park. Both suit overnight highway stops and family stays. The Elk City / Clinton KOA Journey provides another full-service option along the I-40 corridor.
For lake camping, Foss State Park sits on Foss Lake in western Oklahoma, where recreational activities include hiking, biking, disc golf, horseback riding, fishing, boating and camping. Sandy Beach - Foss State Park is one of the park's shoreline campgrounds. Crowder Lake University Park, owned and operated by Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Washita County about eight miles south of Weatherford, offers a quieter alternative.
Things to do around Clinton
Route 66 anchors most in-town activity. Travelers can visit the Oklahoma Route 66 Museum in Clinton, then continue west toward Elk City for additional Mother Road stops.
Water recreation centers on Foss Lake. Foss State Park supports hiking, biking, disc golf, horseback riding, fishing, boating, swimming and camping, and Sandy Beach - Foss State Park provides swim-beach access to the reservoir. Crowder Lake is designated a Trophy Bass Lake by the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation, with black and white bass, crappie, saugeye, bluegill and channel catfish, and is a no-wake lake, which makes it well suited to kayaking, paddleboarding and paddle fishing.
Families staying at Water-Zoo Campground can walk to the adjacent indoor waterpark, a useful option on hot or stormy afternoons.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel in western Oklahoma. Daytime highs sit in the pleasant range, wildflowers bloom on the prairie, and lake water warms enough for shoreline use by late spring. May is the wettest month, averaging about 100 mm of rainfall over roughly nine rainy days, and severe thunderstorms and tornadoes are most common from April through June, so RVers should monitor forecasts and know the nearest shelter at their campground.
Summer brings hot conditions with highs often in the mid-90s Fahrenheit and August the hottest month. Foss Lake sees peak use for boating and swimming, and reservations at Sandy Beach - Foss State Park and other shoreline sites fill quickly around holiday weekends. Shade is limited at most western Oklahoma sites, so full-hookup power for air conditioning matters.
Winter is mild by northern standards but windy, with occasional cold snaps and light snow. Services thin at some state park facilities, though Foss State Park is open year round.
How to book campgrounds near Clinton
State park sites at Foss are booked through the Oklahoma State Parks reservation system on the ReserveAmerica portal. RV, big rig, shaded and tent sites can all be reserved online, along with two cabins. Reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to eleven months in advance, so summer weekends and holidays should be locked in early.
Private parks in Clinton, including Atchley's Route 66 RV Park, Water-Zoo Campground, and the Elk City / Clinton KOA Journey, take direct bookings by phone or through their own websites.
Crowder Lake University Park works differently. Due to the limited number of camping sites available, reservations are not taken, and sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so arrive early on busy weekends.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is open rolling prairie and red-bed country, with little natural shade at most sites. Wind is a constant factor, especially in spring, and awnings should be retracted when leaving camp.
Hookups vary by property. At Foss State Park, facilities include RV campsites, ten of which have full hookups, and all sites offer 30-amp or 50-amp service plus water. Crowder Lake University Park has five shaded concrete RV sites with water, electric, picnic tables, cooking grills and a dump station, so full sewer hookups on site are not available. Private parks in town typically offer 20, 30 and 50-amp service with pull-thru options.
Cell coverage is generally reliable near I-40 but can weaken at Crowder Lake. Wildlife precautions include watching for snakes and ticks in warmer months.

Canada trips may be allowed with host approval, but most Clinton renters head west to chase the Mother Road. eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Clinton?
Booking ahead pays off, especially in peak season. For Foss State Park (the most popular spot near Clinton), reserve through the Oklahoma State Parks system 2 to 6 months in advance for May through August weekends. Private parks in Clinton usually have availability 2 to 4 weeks out, but holiday weekends (Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day) sell out faster. Shoulder seasons (April, September, October) are much more relaxed, often you can book a few days ahead. Tip: stack one night at a Route 66 themed park in Clinton with two nights lakeside at Foss for the perfect mix of culture and nature on your Oklahoma RV trip.
travelok.com/state-parks/foss-state-parkWhat are driving conditions like around Clinton, OK?
Driving an RV around Clinton is refreshingly easy. I-40 runs right through town with wide lanes, gentle grades, and plenty of truck stops, ideal for first-time RV drivers. Local roads are flat to gently rolling prairie with light traffic. Two things to watch: spring can bring strong crosswinds across the open plains (slow down in a tall rig when gusts kick up), and severe thunderstorm season runs March through June, occasionally with hail. Check OK511 before you roll. Winter ice events are rare but possible January through February. Tip: stick to I-40 after dark since old US-66 sections are scenic but often unlit and narrow.

The security deposit is separate from your booking payment. To avoid issues: do a thorough walkaround at pickup with the host (take photos), follow the mileage and generator-hour policies in your agreement, and return the RV clean with tanks dumped. Tip: keep all receipts for fuel and propane top-offs so the post-trip checkout goes smoothly.
