Campgrounds near Comanche, Oklahoma
Comanche sits in Stephens County in south-central Oklahoma, roughly midway between the Red River and the Wichita Mountains. RV travelers use the town as a base for reaching several U.S. Army Corps of Engineers recreation areas and small-town RV parks along the U.S. 81 and State Highway 53 corridors. Waurika Lake, about a half-hour south, covers roughly 10,100 acres of water and 12,000 acres of land across Jefferson, Cotton, and Stephens Counties, giving the area its largest concentration of campsites.
Close-in options include Chisolm Trail RV Park and Duncan Mobile Village in nearby Duncan, plus Town and Country RV Park of Marlow to the north and Southern Plains RV Park within easy driving range. These privately operated parks tend to focus on full-hookup pull-through sites suitable for larger rigs, while the Corps campgrounds around Waurika Lake add waterfront and shaded options accessible through Waurika Lake Marina & Campgrounds.
Several recreation areas ring the lake, with boat ramps, campgrounds, sanitary facilities, and picnic shelters, so the mix of private and federal sites covers most RV needs within a short drive of Comanche.
Things to do around Comanche
Water recreation anchors most trips. Waurika Lake is known for fishing, with channel and flathead catfish, largemouth and white bass, hybrid striper, crappie, walleye, and sunfish in the waters, and the large areas of open water, four large embayments, and numerous smaller coves make boating and skiing straightforward. Swimming beaches sit at both the Kiowa Park I and Chisholm Trail campgrounds, and shower facilities are provided at both swimming areas.
Beyond the lake, day trips reach the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge west of Lawton for bison viewing and hiking, and Chickasaw National Recreation Area near Sulphur for spring-fed swimming and shaded trails. Duncan hosts the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center for a rainy-day option, and small-town parks in Marlow and Comanche work well for shorter walks with kids.

The region has a humid subtropical climate with strong seasonal swings. Summers peak in August, with average highs near 95°F and lows near 71°F, while January is the coldest month, with average highs near 53°F and lows near 33°F. May is typically the wettest month, and July can feel uncomfortably humid. Spring storms can be strong, and severe weather and tornadoes are most common from April through June across southern Oklahoma.
Corps of Engineers campgrounds around Waurika Lake follow a seasonal pattern. Kiowa Park I is open between March and September, and reservations are accepted in peak season only, from May through September. Chisholm Trail Ridge operates on a similar May-through-September peak schedule. Weekends around Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day fill first.
Fall brings the most comfortable RV weather, with mild days, cooler nights, and lower humidity. Snowfall in the area is light, so winter camping is possible at private parks that stay open year-round, though water hookups can be affected during hard freezes.
How to book campgrounds near Comanche
Federal sites at Waurika Lake are booked through Recreation.gov. The Corps of Engineers uses that portal for Kiowa Park I and Chisholm Trail Ridge, and popular holiday weekends can sell out well in advance, though last-minute cancellations do occur. Recreation.gov typically opens a six-month booking window, so Memorial Day through Labor Day sites are best secured early.
Private parks such as Chisolm Trail RV Park, Duncan Mobile Village, Town and Country RV Park of Marlow, and Southern Plains RV Park handle bookings directly by phone or website. Monthly stays are common at these locations, so short-stay availability can be tighter than site counts suggest. Waurika Lake Marina & Campgrounds accepts inquiries through its own channel for sites tied to the marina.
Callers should confirm rig length limits and 30/50-amp availability before arrival, especially for larger fifth wheels and Class A motorhomes.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Comanche is rolling prairie with mesquite, oak, and post-oak cover. Sites at Waurika Lake range from open, sun-exposed pads to shaded pull-ins near the shoreline, with large shade trees and gently sloping lakefront views common at the Corps parks. Corps sites generally offer 30-amp electric and water hookups rather than full hookups, so travelers needing sewer service often rely on private parks in Duncan or Marlow.
Cell coverage is generally reliable in Comanche, Duncan, and Marlow, but can drop in coves on the far side of Waurika Lake. Grocery, fuel, and propane are easiest in Duncan. Summer afternoons are hot, so shaded sites and a functional AC matter, and wind is a constant on the open prairie, which affects awnings and slide toppers. Wildlife is common at dawn and dusk, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, rabbits, and waterfowl near the lake.
