Southern Oklahoma has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, so most private RV parks around Healdton operate year-round. Spring and fall are the practical sweet spots for RV travel: temperatures are comfortable, and lakes are still busy but not saturated. Spring also brings the region's wettest stretch, with severe thunderstorms most frequent from April into June across central and southern Oklahoma. Summer is peak season at Lake Murray and Chickasaw. Campsites can book up on weekends and around holidays, so booking well in advance is recommended. Expect daytime highs in the 90s and warm, humid nights; shaded lakeside sites with hookups go first. Winter is the quietest window. Camping is still possible, but some public campgrounds reduce operations. At Lake Murray, Duke's Forest is one of the smaller, less trafficked campgrounds where both tent and RV camping are available, and due to low traffic this campground is often closed during the winter season. Freezing nights are common in December and January, so travellers should winterize water hookups accordingly.

Terrain around Healdton is mostly gentle, with scattered oak groves and open ranchland; the Arbuckle Mountains rise to the northeast, where the western plains meet the eastern forests in the Crosstimbers region. Cell coverage is generally reliable near town and along I-35 but can drop inside wooded state-park loops and in the Lake of the Arbuckles area. Hookup levels differ by site. At The Point Campground on Lake of the Arbuckles, the Upper and Lower Loops have a mixture of electric and non-electric campsites, water hookups are available at the electric sites, and there are no sewer hookups but a dump station is located less than a mile from the campgrounds. Private parks around Healdton typically offer full hookups and paved or gravel pads. Campers should also be prepared for severe thunderstorms in spring and watch for wildlife, including snakes, when hiking and setting up sites.
