Campgrounds near Howe, Oklahoma
Howe sits in LeFlore County in southeast Oklahoma, at the western edge of the Ouachita Mountains and within a short drive of Lake Wister and the Ouachita National Forest. The area draws RV travelers looking for lake access, mountain scenery, and trail networks that stretch into Arkansas.
Lake Wister State Park offers multiple camping areas around the roughly 7,300-acre Lake Wister, with activities including hiking, biking, boating, and water skiing. Wards Landing is one of those camping areas and a common pick for RV travelers who want hookup sites near the water. Talimena State Park, about 20 miles south of Wister, sits at the Oklahoma entrance to the Talimena Scenic Drive.
Smaller private options round out the mix. Long Lake Resort and RV Park | Oklahoma Cabin Rentals, Heaven's Gate RV Park & Retreat, and Big Cedar RV and Cabins provide alternatives when state park inventory is booked, with varying levels of hookups and cabin rentals on site.
Things to do near Howe
Water recreation centers on Lake Wister. Boating, fishing, and water skiing are available inside the state park, and the Poteau River and Fourche Maline feed the lake and add paddling and bank-fishing options.
Hiking and off-road trails dominate the south side of the region. Talimena State Park marks the Oklahoma entrance to the Talimena National Scenic Drive and serves as a trailhead for hikers, mountain bikers, and off-road vehicle riders, with access to trails in the surrounding Ouachita National Forest. The park is the western terminus of the Ouachita Trail, which stretches over 200 miles into Arkansas.
Nearby cultural stops include Heavener Runestone Park and the Peter Conser House, both a short drive from Howe.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel in this part of Oklahoma. Dogwoods bloom in April, and hardwoods along the Ouachita Trail turn in mid to late October, driving heavy demand for sites along the Talimena Scenic Drive.
Summer is hot and humid with afternoon thunderstorms, but lake-based sites at Wister stay busy through the school break. Book well ahead if targeting weekends or holidays. Water levels on Lake Wister can fluctuate after heavy spring rains, occasionally affecting lower-elevation loops.
Winter is mild by regional standards but wet. Some day-use and secondary areas may operate on reduced schedules, so confirm status before travel. Talimena State Park is open year round, while private parks in the area may reduce services outside the main season.
How to book a campsite
Oklahoma State Parks manage reservations through a single online system operated by ReserveAmerica. RV and tent sites at Lake Wister State Park and Talimena State Park must be reserved online. Talimena offers 10 RV sites with 30-amp electricity and water hookups, plus seven designated tent sites with pads.
Reservations at Talimena can be made up to 11 months in advance, and standard windows require booking at least one day ahead of arrival. With only 10 RV sites at Talimena, place a reservation several weeks before the trip during peak periods.
Private parks like Long Lake Resort and RV Park, Heaven's Gate RV Park & Retreat, and Big Cedar RV and Cabins handle bookings through their own websites.
What to expect
Expect a mix of hookup options at the state parks. Lake Wister offers RV sites with full hookups and water-and-electric-only sites across its camping areas, including Wards Landing. At Talimena, sites have 30-amp electric and water but no sewer, with restrooms, hot showers, a dump station, fire rings, and picnic tables.
Terrain in the Ouachita foothills can be uneven. Sloped and shelved sites are common, so larger rigs should confirm pad length and levelness before booking. Cell coverage weakens along the scenic drive.
Wildlife includes deer and wild turkey, with black bear present in the higher elevations of the Ouachitas. Store food securely and follow posted fire restrictions during dry stretches.

Cedar Lake Equestrian Camp and Winding Stair Campground both permit leashed pets at sites. Pro tip: pack a tie-out, a collapsible bowl, and tick prevention, since summer in southeast Oklahoma brings dense underbrush. Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees so there are no surprises at pickup.

Yes, and it's the easiest way to start your trip. Many hosts offer RV delivery in Howe, OK and surrounding Le Flore County, meaning your motorhome or travel trailer arrives at your campsite, driveway, or trailhead fully set up. This is perfect if you're nervous about backing a 30-foot rig into a wooded site at Cedar Lake Campground or maneuvering up Winding Stair Mountain. The host levels the RV, hooks up power and water, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees vary by distance, so popular drop spots include Heavener Runestone Park, Lake Wister State Park, and Cedar Lake. Filter by Delivery on RVezy and message hosts directly with your exact location.

You've landed in one of Oklahoma's most scenic camping corridors. The best campgrounds near Howe include Cedar Lake Campground (about 15 miles south in the Ouachita National Forest, with electric sites, swimming, and the Old Pine Interpretive Trail), Winding Stair Campground (right on the Talimena Scenic Byway with cool mountain breezes), Lake Wister State Park (about 20 miles north, full-hookup RV sites on a 4,000-acre lake), Big Cedar RV Park (a tucked-away favorite for big rigs near Highway 259), and Sallisaw/Fort Smith West KOA (about 35 miles north for full amenities). For RV camping in Howe and beyond, book Cedar Lake and Lake Wister well in advance through Recreation.gov and the Oklahoma State Parks portal.
travelok.com/state-parks/campsitesWhen is the best time of year for RV camping near Howe?
Spring and fall are the sweet spots. April through early June brings wildflowers, dogwoods, and daytime highs in the 70s and low 80s, perfect for hiking the Ouachita National Recreation Trail. Mid-September through early November is arguably even better, with crisp 60 to 75 degree days, low humidity, and stunning fall color on the Talimena Scenic Byway, peaking in late October. Summer (July and August) is hot and humid with highs near 90 to 95 degrees and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, but lake camping at Cedar Lake stays cool. Winters are mild with daytime highs in the 50s, making December RV camping in Howe genuinely doable. Pro tip: book fall foliage dates two to three months ahead.
weather.gov/oun/climate-recordsI've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Howe?
You're going to do great, and you won't be left to figure it out alone. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially around Howe where traffic is light and U.S. Highways 59 and 270 are wide, well-paved, and easy to navigate. Every RVezy host provides a thorough walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slides, water tanks, and dump valves. If mountain driving on the Talimena Scenic Byway feels intimidating, choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in Howe under 25 feet. Pro tip: practice in a quiet parking lot before heading toward Winding Stair Mountain, and stick to daylight driving your first day to enjoy the views.
fs.usda.gov/r08/ouachitaWhat if something goes wrong on the road?
Help is one tap away, day or night. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat tire on Highway 59 south of Heavener, a dead battery at Cedar Lake, or a slide-out that won't retract on the Talimena Byway, help dispatches fast. You can also message your host directly through the RVezy app, since many local Howe owners know the rig inside and out and can troubleshoot in minutes. RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's contact in your phone before leaving, since cell coverage thins out inside Ouachita National Forest.
fs.usda.gov/r08/ouachitaCan I take my Howe RV rental across state lines into Arkansas or Texas?
Yes, and an RV road trip from Howe practically begs for it. You're just about 15 miles from the Arkansas state line, making a cross-border swing into Mena, Queen Wilhelmina State Park, and Hot Springs National Park a natural extension of your itinerary. Texas is also wide open, with Dallas/Fort Worth roughly 230 miles southwest. Domestic travel across the contiguous United States is covered under RVezy's insurance and protection plans. Important note: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: the Talimena Scenic Byway crosses into Arkansas at its eastern terminus near Mena, so you can knock out two states in a single afternoon drive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my Howe RV trip?
Fuel is easier to plan than you'd think. Class C motorhomes around Howe typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans land around 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 MPG). Oklahoma gas prices tend to run below the national average, which is great news for your motorhome rental in Howe budget. A typical 300-mile loop from Howe to Talimena Byway, Lake Wister, and back will run roughly 25 to 40 gallons of fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Poteau or Heavener before heading into the Ouachita National Forest, since gas stations get sparse along the byway and mountain backroads.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campsite near Howe?
Earlier is better, but you've got flexibility. For peak fall foliage weekends in October on the Talimena Scenic Byway and summer holidays at Lake Wister State Park, book three to five months ahead through Oklahoma State Parks' online reservation system. Cedar Lake Campground in the Ouachita National Forest books through Recreation.gov and typically opens reservations six months in advance, with prime lakeside sites going fast. Mid-week and shoulder season trips often have same-week availability, perfect for spontaneous travelers. Pro tip: if your first-choice campground is full, look at Winding Stair, Billy Creek, or Lake Wister's Quarry Island loop, which often have openings even when Cedar Lake is booked solid.
recreation.gov/camping/gateways/2733What are driving conditions like in and around Howe?
You'll find some of the most enjoyable RV driving in Oklahoma right here. U.S. Highway 59 through Howe is a smooth, two-lane road with gentle terrain, and Interstate 40 runs about 25 miles north for fast travel west to Oklahoma City or east into Arkansas. The big highlight, the Talimena Scenic Byway, features 54 miles of ridge-top driving with grades up to 8 percent and tight switchbacks, so take it slow and use lower gears descending. Spring (April through June) brings severe thunderstorms and occasional tornadoes across Oklahoma, so check the National Weather Service forecast daily. Pro tip: avoid the byway in early morning fog and after heavy rain, when visibility on the ridgeline drops fast.
weather.gov/tsa/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Howe?
You've got a great mix of rustic and full-service options. Cedar Lake Campground in the Ouachita National Forest offers electric hookups, drinking water, vault and flush toilets, hot showers, and a dump station, but no sewer at individual sites. Lake Wister State Park has full-hookup RV sites with 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, plus a dump station, laundry, and Wi-Fi at the office. Private parks like Big Cedar RV Park provide full hookups and pull-through sites. For dumping and fresh water on the road, Lake Wister and the Heavener city dump station are reliable stops. Pro tip: bring a 50-foot drinking-water hose and a sewer hose extension, since Ouachita National Forest sites often place hookups farther from the pad than expected.
fs.usda.gov/recarea/ouachita/recreation/recarea/?recid=10745What features come with RV rentals in Howe?
You'll be impressed by how well-equipped these rigs are. Most RV rentals in Howe, OK include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 people, climate control with air conditioning and propane furnace, and seatbelts for safe travel. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes usually come with a generator for off-grid camping at Winding Stair, TV/DVD entertainment, and outdoor awnings perfect for Cedar Lake sunsets. Wi-Fi varies, since cell signal can be spotty in the Ouachita Mountains, so download maps and entertainment before leaving Howe. Pro tip: review each listing's amenity list and message the host to confirm essentials like bedding, a coffee maker, or outdoor chairs are included.
travelok.com/state-parks/campsitesWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Howe RV rental?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Popular add-ons for RV rental in Oklahoma include linen and kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor rugs, generators or extra propane, bike racks, kayaks, and Starlink Wi-Fi for staying connected in the Ouachita Mountains. Many Howe hosts offer delivery to Cedar Lake, Lake Wister, or Heavener Runestone State Park for a flat fee based on distance. Pickup and dropoff times are usually flexible, and mileage policies range from a set number of free miles per day to unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a stocked kitchen kit for a turn-key family RV trip Howe families love.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Howe%2C%20OklahomaHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you rent an RV in Howe through RVezy, you pay through the platform using a credit card, never in cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment; the exact amount is shown on the listing and depends on the RV's value. As long as you return the RV clean, on time, and damage-free, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: do a thorough video walkthrough at pickup and dropoff with the host present and upload it to the RVezy app, so you have clear documentation after your Ouachita Mountains adventure.
