RV camping near Hiller, Pennsylvania
Hiller is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Luzerne Township, Fayette County, in southwestern Pennsylvania. It sits in the northeast corner of Luzerne Township, bordered by Dunlap Creek to the east and the Monongahela River to the northwest, with Pennsylvania Route 43 (the Mon-Fayette Expressway) passing just south and providing access to Uniontown, about 16 miles southeast, and downtown Pittsburgh, roughly 41 miles to the north. This location puts RV travelers within an easy drive of both a major metro and the Laurel Highlands recreation corridor.
Campground options close to Hiller include Firehouse RV Campgrounds and The Blue Canoe RV Resort along the Monongahela River corridor. To the north and west, Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey serve travelers routing through the Pittsburgh suburbs, while Sand Springs Campground gives access to more rural Fayette County terrain.
Most trips from Hiller pair a base campground with day trips into the Laurel Highlands, anchored by Ohiopyle State Park and its roughly 20,500 acres of rugged terrain along the Youghiogheny River Gorge.
Things to do near Hiller
The headline draw for families is Ohiopyle State Park, roughly an hour southeast, which attracts millions of visitors annually with Class I-IV whitewater on the Youghiogheny, waterfalls, natural waterslides, and access to the Great Allegheny Passage rail-trail. Nearby stops include Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and Kentuck Knob, plus Laurel Caverns to the south.
History stops sit closer to Hiller itself. Fayette County is home to Fort Necessity National Battlefield, site of George Washington's first military engagement, and Friendship Hill National Historic Site, the country estate of Albert Gallatin. Nemacolin Castle, also known as Bowman's Castle, is a historic mansion perched on a bluff overlooking the Monongahela River in nearby Brownsville.
Pittsburgh museums, sports venues, and the three rivers are within a straightforward drive north via PA 43.

The RV season in this part of Pennsylvania runs roughly from April through mid-December, matching state park operating windows. Kentuck Campground at Ohiopyle is open from April to mid-December, and the main whitewater rafting season on the Youghiogheny runs April through October, with falls areas only open when staffed.
Summer is peak. Weekends at Ohiopyle-area campgrounds fill months out, and popular trailheads and river-access points see heavy use. Crowds are inevitable at popular trails and viewpoints, so visitors who want quieter conditions typically avoid summer and holiday weekends. Booking well in advance is the difference between a confirmed site and a wait list.
Spring and fall bring lighter crowds and cooler nights, with strong foliage across the Laurel Highlands ridges in October. Winter camping is limited, since most private and state park sites close by mid-December, though the 70-mile Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail stays open year round for backpackers with proper gear.

Dan’s camper was perfect for our weekend camping trip. It was clean, organized, and fit our family of 4 with plenty of room. Dan was very helpful at pick up and drop off getting everything hooked up and offloaded.

How to book campsites near Hiller
Private parks in the Hiller area, including Firehouse RV Campgrounds, The Blue Canoe RV Resort, Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey, Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey, and Sand Springs Campground, take reservations directly through their own websites, with the two KOA locations bookable through the KOA reservation platform. For summer weekends, book two to three months out at minimum.
For Pennsylvania state parks such as Ohiopyle, use the Pennsylvania State Parks and Forests reservation website. Most campsites can be reserved up to 11 months in advance to noon of the day of arrival, and Pennsylvania releases new inventory at 12:00 PM (noon) Eastern Time, which is unusual among state park systems. Advance reservations are available for almost all campsites, and unreserved sites are offered first-come, first-served.
Reservations can also be made by calling 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), Monday through Saturday, 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., except on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year's Day.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain around Hiller is rolling river-valley country along the Monongahela, with steeper ridges climbing east into the Laurel Highlands. Roads are generally well-graded for towed rigs, but some approaches to Ohiopyle involve grades and switchbacks. Large RVs heading to Kentuck Campground are directed to avoid SR 2019 and instead route via PA 40 and SR 2010 (Chalk Hill-Ohiopyle Road).
At Kentuck Campground, sites include picnic tables, fire rings, and many with electric hookups, plus a sanitary dump station and shower houses; full hookups are not offered there. There are no entrance fees or day-use fees at Pennsylvania state parks, though campsite fees apply. Alcohol is prohibited, and pets are restricted to designated sites. Private campgrounds around Hiller typically offer full hookups, showers, and family amenities that state parks do not.
