Campgrounds and RV parks near Mather, PA

Outdoor recreation centers on Ryerson Station State Park. The 1,164-acre park features a swimming pool, campground, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and winter activities. Three hiking trails originate directly from the campground, including one leading to the historic Chess Cemetery. The former lake no longer exists after dam damage, so activities now focus on hiking, mushroom hunting, and camping. The Greene River Trail is a popular local ride along the Monongahela River. The trail parallels the Monongahela River as it winds through the coal mining region of Greene County, with the 7.24 mile route starting in Millsboro at the Greene Cove Yacht Club trailhead in Jefferson Township. The Greene Cove Trailhead portion is currently closed, so most riders access the trail from the Rices Landing or Jessop Boat Club trailheads. Farther afield, guests at the Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey can reach Meadowcroft Rockshelter, Fallingwater, and downtown Pittsburgh attractions within about an hour.

Waynesburg experiences a humid continental climate, marked by very strong seasonal contrasts. Summers are warm, while winters are cold and bring regular snowfall. Precipitation is fairly wet overall and spread relatively evenly throughout the year, with winter moisture often arriving as snow. Late spring through early fall is the primary RV season. Summer draws the most campers, with warm days ideal for hiking and swimming. The wettest month, July, sees around 129 mm of rainfall, so afternoon thunderstorms are common. Fall brings cooler nights and strong foliage color across Greene County, and campgrounds are noticeably quieter after Labor Day. Winter camping is possible but limited. A 35-site tent and trailer campground is open year round at Ryerson Station, and modern restrooms with showers are available year round, while a smaller family-assist restroom is open from November to April. Access is not guaranteed during severe winter weather. Many private campgrounds in the region close or reduce services between late fall and early spring, so confirm operating dates before booking a cold-weather trip.

Expect narrow, hilly rural roads. Class-A motorhomes and larger-width vehicles are not advisable on McNay Ridge Road, and all drivers should use extreme caution when proceeding to the campground on this narrow road. Ryerson Station accommodates RVs up to 30 feet, and larger rigs are better suited to the KOA or private parks along the I-79 corridor. Hookups vary by site. Many sites have electric, with a select few having full-hookup service, electric-only sites are available with 50-amp hook ups, and all campsites feature a fire ring and a picnic table. A sanitary dump station and coin-operated laundry facilities are on site. Cell coverage is unreliable in the more remote areas. Cell service is unpredictable in and around many Pennsylvania State Parks, so download the park map before your visit. Bring cash for firewood and small purchases at rural stores.
