Campgrounds near McMurray
McMurray sits in Peters Township in Washington County, roughly 20 minutes south of downtown Pittsburgh along Interstate 79. The location works well as an RV base for travelers who want quick access to the city plus rural campgrounds in the rolling hills of southwestern Pennsylvania. Most nearby sites are within a 30 to 45 minute drive.
Options range from full-service private parks to a large state park campground. Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey bracket the metro area with standardized KOA amenities. Wallace Trailer Sales and Court and Firehouse RV Campgrounds offer smaller, locally run alternatives closer to McMurray itself.
For a more traditional outdoor stay, Sioux - Raccoon Creek State Park lies west of Pittsburgh, near Hookstown, about 30 miles from the city, and provides wooded sites inside one of Pennsylvania's largest and most visited state parks. Together these five properties cover the main styles of RV camping in the area: interstate-adjacent, small private, and public land.
Things to do near McMurray
Pittsburgh is the main draw. RV travelers commonly day-trip into the city for the museums on the North Shore, the Strip District, Point State Park, and Kennywood amusement park in West Mifflin. PNC Park and Acrisure Stadium are also short drives from any of the campgrounds listed above.
Closer to McMurray, Mingo Creek County Park has covered bridges and picnic areas, and the Montour Trail offers a long rail-trail for cycling. Raccoon Creek State Park offers hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, and boating on the 101-acre Raccoon Lake, along with a well-known wildflower reserve.
Families often combine one Pittsburgh day, one outdoor day, and a rest day at the campground pool or playground.

The peak RV season in the McMurray area runs from Memorial Day through mid-October. Summer weekends fill first, especially around July 4th and Labor Day, and reservations are recommended, especially for Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends when the park draws heavy crowds from the Pittsburgh area.
Spring camping is possible from April onward, but expect wet ground and variable temperatures. The spring and summer wildflower blooms are a star attraction at Raccoon Creek, with the season peaking in late April and late August. Fall is a strong shoulder season with cooler nights, fewer bugs, and colorful foliage, and fall foliage typically peaks in mid-October.
Winter operations are limited. Most private parks reduce services or close from late fall until spring, and at Raccoon Creek the E and F loops open in early April and close in mid-October. Travelers planning a November through March trip should confirm hookups, water availability, and gate hours directly with the campground before booking.

Dan’s camper was perfect for our weekend camping trip. It was clean, organized, and fit our family of 4 with plenty of room. Dan was very helpful at pick up and drop off getting everything hooked up and offloaded.

How to book
Sioux - Raccoon Creek State Park is reserved through the Pennsylvania state park reservation system. Campsite reservations open 11 months in advance, and sites can be reserved up until noon on the day of arrival. Popular summer weekends are often claimed soon after the window opens, so early planning matters, and aiming to book at least three months in advance is advisable, especially for cabins.
Washington / Pittsburgh SW KOA Journey and Madison/Pittsburgh SE KOA Journey are booked through KOA's national reservation platform, either online or by phone. Wallace Trailer Sales and Court and Firehouse RV Campgrounds are smaller operations, and a direct phone call is often the fastest way to confirm an RV site, verify hookup type, and ask about length restrictions.
What to expect
Terrain around McMurray is hilly. Roads into the smaller private campgrounds and into Raccoon Creek State Park include grades and tight curves, so drivers new to RVs should allow extra time and plan daylight arrivals.
Site types vary. The KOA Journey properties generally offer pull-throughs with full hookups, cabins, and tent areas. At the state park, the 172 modern tent and trailer campsites have access to flush facilities, warm showers, and the option of electricity, and each site has a picnic table and fire ring. Smaller local parks may be primarily seasonal or long-term, with a limited number of transient RV sites.
Cell service is reliable near the interstates and thinner in the state park interior. Expect mosquitoes and ticks in wooded sites from late spring through early fall.
