Camping near Mount Morris, Pennsylvania
Mount Morris sits in Greene County in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania, directly off Interstate 79 and roughly ten miles north of Morgantown, West Virginia. The location makes it a practical staging point for RV travelers heading into the Cheat River corridor, Coopers Rock State Forest, or the Laurel Highlands.
Private RV parks close to the exit include Indian Meadows Campground and Firehouse RV Campgrounds, with Oakdale Village Mobile City, LLC and Fairmont Hills RV Park offering additional options a short drive south across the state line. Sand Springs Campground rounds out the nearby list for travelers wanting a quieter rural setting.
Ryerson Station State Park, the closest Pennsylvania state park, sits in Greene County in the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania, near the West Virginia border, and the 1,164-acre park features a swimming pool, campground, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and winter activities. To the south, Coopers Rock is located 13 miles from Morgantown on Exit 15 of I-68 and features canyon overlooks, sandstone cliffs for climbing, more than fifty miles of hiking and biking trails, cross-country skiing terrain, and trout fishing.
Things to do near Mount Morris
Hiking and overlooks dominate the outdoor menu. Three hiking trails originate directly from the Ryerson Station campground, and the park's 62-acre Ronald J. Duke Lake is currently drawn down for dam safety issues, leaving hiking and the swimming pool as primary on-site recreation.
A short drive south, Coopers Rock delivers the region's marquee viewpoint over the Cheat River Gorge, plus climbing on sandstone cliffs and an extensive mountain-biking network. Cheat Lake is a 13-mile-long reservoir on the Cheat River, and the lake has three marinas: Edgewater Marina, Cheat Lake Marina, and Sunset Beach Marina, with rentals available for pontoons, kayaks, and paddleboards.
Morgantown itself adds college-town amenities, restaurants, and grocery resupply, and the Mon River Trail system offers flat rail-trail cycling suitable for families traveling with kids and bikes.

The camping window in this part of the Appalachians is longest at private parks and shortest at public forests. Coopers Rock State Forest houses two campgrounds, McCollum and Rhododendron, with the campgrounds opening by the first weekend in April; Rhododendron closes on the first Saturday in November, while McCollum remains open until the first Saturday of December, weather permitting. Ryerson Station operates a 35-site tent and trailer campground open year round, with modern restrooms and showers available year round and a smaller family-assist restroom open from November to April.
Late spring through early fall is peak season for warm-weather activities, and summer weekends fill fastest. Fall brings hardwood color across the ridges and lighter crowds mid-week.
Winter camping remains possible at private parks and at Ryerson, but expect snow, freezing overnight temperatures, and reduced services. Spring tends to be the wettest season and fall the driest, so plan for muddy trails and pack rain gear in April and May.
How to book a site
Private parks around Mount Morris typically take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites, and third-party platforms list many of them for online booking. For weekend and holiday stays in summer, contact the park several weeks in advance.
For Pennsylvania state parks including Ryerson Station, book through the state reservation system. Make online reservations for day use and overnight facilities or call toll-free 888-PA-PARKS (888-727-2757), from 7:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M., Monday to Saturday. Reservations must be made 3 days ahead of arrival and can be made up to 11 months in advance.
West Virginia state parks and forests, including Coopers Rock, use a separate system. Reservations may be made for no less than two consecutive nights on weekends (Friday and Saturday) or one night Sunday through Thursday, and each site can be reserved a year in advance.
What to expect on arrival
Terrain here is rolling to steep, and access roads into rural campgrounds can be narrow. Class-A motorhomes and larger width vehicles are not advisable on McNay Ridge Road at Ryerson Station, and all drivers should use extreme caution when proceeding to the campground on this narrow road. Check length and width limits before booking with a larger rig.
Cell coverage is inconsistent once off the interstate. Cell service remains spotty at Ryerson, with Verizon showing no coverage and AT&T providing weak signals, so download park maps and campground documents in advance.
Hookups vary by park. Full water, electric, and sewer are common at private parks near the I-79 corridor, while state and forest campgrounds more often provide electric with a shared dump station. Buy firewood locally, keep food secured for wildlife, and expect cool nights even in summer at higher elevations.
