Twelve miles of hiking and biking trails wind through the park, and boats, kayaks, and canoes are available at the camp store. Downtown Columbia offers the South Carolina State Museum, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, and the University of South Carolina's Horseshoe. The Columbia area supports year-round RV camping, though shoulder seasons are the most comfortable. Spring and fall bring mild days, lower humidity, and the busiest reservation windows at Sesquicentennial State Park. The best time to visit this camping area is during the spring and fall seasons when the weather is mild and ideal for outdoor activities. Summer stays are hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August; sites with shade and full hookups are easier to enjoy in that heat. Winter camping remains viable, since freezes are brief and snow is rare, but campers should expect cool nights and occasional rain. At Sesquicentennial, Loop 1 is closed seasonally. Loop 2 is open year round. Private parks in Lexington and Lugoff generally operate through all four seasons. Peak weekends around holidays and University of South Carolina football Saturdays fill quickly, so booking ahead during those windows is recommended.
