Campgrounds and RV parks near Cheraw, SC

Cheraw State Park anchors most trip plans. The park offers an 18-hole championship golf course designed by Tom Jackson, hiking and equestrian trails, kayak and canoe rentals, fishing from a lakeside boardwalk, and access to cypress wetlands around Lake Juniper. Note that the state park golf course is scheduled for an extended renovation closure, so travelers should confirm tee-time availability with the pro shop before booking. H Cooper Black Jr Memorial Recreational Area draws horse owners and dog handlers, with more than 20 miles of trails and sand roads plus stables, kennels, corrals, and arenas. In town, historic downtown Cheraw offers walking tours, a riverwalk along the Pee Dee River, and the Cheraw Fish Hatchery. Sycamore Lodge Resort places golfers within a short drive of the Pinehurst area.

The Cheraw area camps year-round, but conditions vary sharply by season. Summers are hot and humid, winters are short and cool, and precipitation is spread through the year. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with mild days, lower humidity, and active wildlife around the lakes and pine forests. Summer brings the highest demand at lakeside sites, along with afternoon thunderstorms and heavy humidity. The best time to visit H Cooper Black is during the cooler months, from late fall to early spring, when the weather is more comfortable for riding, hiking, and dog training. Summer heat and humidity make the open sandy trails less pleasant. Fall coincides with hunting seasons on Wildlife Management Area lands surrounding H Cooper Black. On WMA lands during any gun and muzzleloader hunting season for deer, bear, and hogs, all users except migratory-bird hunters must wear a hat, coat, or vest of solid international orange. Non-hunting visitors should wear blaze orange outside the campground during those seasons.

At Cheraw State Park, each campsite is packed gravel and has individual water and electrical hookups. Pull-through sites accommodate RVs up to 40 feet, and back-in sites up to 34 feet. The campground is convenient to restrooms with hot showers, six sites are waterfront on Lake Juniper, and a dump station is available. Sites 4 and 5 offer full hookups including sewer. H Cooper Black has 27 campsites with electricity and water, plus additional primitive sites, two comfort stations with hot showers, and an RV dump station. Sites are sized to handle horse trailers and larger rigs, with pads long enough for big-rig combinations. Sycamore Lodge Resort sits on wooded acreage in the North Carolina Sandhills and is open year-round with shaded sites, a swimming pool and hot tub, a stocked lake, paddle and fishing boats, mini-golf, nature trails, a playground, and an air-conditioned bathhouse.
