Campgrounds near Chester, South Carolina
Chester sits in the Piedmont region of South Carolina, roughly midway between Charlotte and Columbia along the I-77 corridor. RV travelers use it as a base for lake fishing, disc golf, and short drives to state historic sites. The closest full-service option is Chester State Park, with additional lake and county parks within a 30 to 45 minute drive north toward Lake Wylie and Rock Hill.
Chester State Park occupies a forested setting around a 160-acre lake, and the 523-acre park was developed by the Civilian Conservation Corps on land purchased in 1935, with a 450-foot fishing pier and walking bridge connecting the two sides of the lake. North of Chester, York County operates Ebenezer Park, a 26-acre park on the shores of Lake Wylie with 79 RV campsites and 5 tent campsites. Allison Creek Park sits on the Catawba/Lake Wylie shoreline, Andrew Jackson State Park is northeast near Lancaster, and Charlotte / Fort Mill KOA Journey rounds out the options closer to the North Carolina line.
Things to do around Chester
Water activities anchor most trips. Chester State Park offers fishing from a 450-foot pier or rented jon boats from the historic CCC-built boathouse, and the park rents kayaks, canoes, and pedal boats at the boat dock. On land, the 1.3-mile Caney Fork Creek Nature Trail winds through the surrounding pine forest, and a 27-hole championship disc golf course provides additional recreation.
At Ebenezer Park on Lake Wylie, families get swimming, boating, and courts in one stop. The park features three boat ramps, a semicircular fishing pier, a designated swimming area, and a kayak/canoe launch, plus a beach volleyball court, pickleball court, walking trails, and a playground, with a seasonal concession stand open from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Andrew Jackson State Park adds a museum, small fishing lake, and living-history programs a short drive northeast.

Spring and fall are the sweet spots. From late March through May, daytime highs sit in the comfortable 70s Fahrenheit, wildflowers bloom along Piedmont trails, and lake water is still cool but usable. September through early November brings drier air, fewer bugs, and hardwood color mixing with the pine canopy. Weekends in these shoulder months book heaviest, especially at lake-facing sites.
Summer is peak family season. Expect hot, humid afternoons with pop-up thunderstorms and full campgrounds on holiday weekends. The seasonal concession stand at Ebenezer Park runs from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and lake swimming areas are staffed during this window.
Winter is the quietest season. Chester State Park stays open year-round, and Ebenezer Park is open year-round with camping reservations available up to 13 months in advance. Freezing nights are possible in January, and some day-use amenities scale back.

This was our second time renting from Matt and Shannon, and once again everything was smooth from start to finish. Their RV made our weekend at the Ebony Horsemen Rodeo comfortable and stress-free. Can't wait to book with them again for next year's event!
Maisha P. - Aug 2026
Here’s a polished rewrite of your review: --- Matt was an outstanding host. He was flexible when I needed to adjust both the drop-off location and the rental dates for the RV. He personally met me to hand over the RV, walked me through how to use the equipment, and made sure I felt comfortable. Throughout the process, he was attentive and responsive to my concerns, which made the experience smooth and enjoyable.
