Campgrounds and RV parks near Coward, SC

Fishing and paddling drive most trips. Little Pee Dee State Park sits on the still waters of 54-acre Lake Norton, stocked with bream, bass, and catfish, and Lee State Park offers fishing, boating, and swimming along the Lynches River. Non-motorized boats work well on both waters, and kayaks and jon boats can often be rented at Little Pee Dee. Hiking is low-mileage and flat. Little Pee Dee has two official trails, the Beaver Pond Nature Trail and the Longleaf Pine Trail, both easy and short. Lee State Park caters to equestrians, with designated campsites, hitching rails, stables, and a show ring. For family day trips, Lynches River County Park in Coward itself has an archery range, splash pad, nature center, and boardwalk. Florence, about twenty minutes north, adds groceries, restaurants, and museums.

Spring and fall are the strongest windows. March through May brings mild days, lower humidity, and blooming longleaf pine understory. Weekends at the state parks fill quickly during this period, so booking several months out is wise. Fall from mid-September through November delivers cooler nights and reduced bug pressure, and it aligns with the tail end of Atlantic hurricane season, when storm systems occasionally reach the Pee Dee. Summer is hot and humid. Temperatures regularly exceed 90°F from June through August, with July highs averaging near 92°F. Afternoon thunderstorms are common and biting insects are active near swampy areas. RVs with strong air conditioning fare best, and August is typically the wettest month. Winter camping is workable. Both Lee and Little Pee Dee campgrounds operate year round, and daytime highs sit in the upper 50s, though overnight lows can drop into the mid 30s. Freezing snaps are short but real, so water hoses and tanks need protection.

Expect sandy, pine-shaded sites at most locations. Sand-based pads are characteristic of the Sandhills terrain, drain well, and can rut after heavy rain, so leveling blocks are useful. Hookups vary. At Lee State Park, every family and equestrian site has water and 20/30/50-amp electric, and sites 15, 17, 19, 21, 23, and 25 plus equestrian sites 44-48 add sewer; some pads fit RVs up to 36 feet and others up to 30 feet. At Little Pee Dee, 11 sites are full-hookup with water, electric, and septic, 18 have water and electric only, and 18 tent sites have central water. Lake-side sites at Little Pee Dee are not on the septic loop, so confirm before booking a large rig. South Carolina state parks generally do not provide laundry facilities, so plan grocery and laundry stops in Florence or Lake City. Cell service is usable but not always strong under dense pine cover.
