Camping near Dalzell, South Carolina
Dalzell sits in Sumter County in the South Carolina Midlands, adjacent to Shaw Air Force Base and roughly 40 miles east of Columbia. The area is a practical base for RV travelers exploring the High Hills of Santee, Lake Marion, and the Sandhills region, with several state park campgrounds within a short drive.
The closest option is Poinsett State Park, located in the High Hills of Santee where the Sandhills meet the coastal plain. The park covers about 1,000 acres and offers 24 sites with water and electrical hookups plus 26 tent sites, with some pads able to accommodate RVs up to 40 feet. Rustic cabins and other structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps beginning in 1934 remain on site.
Additional nearby options include Lee State Park along the Lynches River off Interstate 20, Columbia / Camden RV Park to the west, Cypress View - Santee State Park on Lake Marion, and Sesquicentennial State Park just outside Columbia. Together they cover lake, river, and forest settings within about an hour of Dalzell.
Things to do near Dalzell
Water recreation is a defining feature of the region. Poinsett State Park has a 10-acre lake with kayak, canoe, paddleboard, jon boat, and pedal boat rentals, plus fishing and swimming in the warmer months. Cypress View - Santee State Park sits directly on Lake Marion, which is known for catfish and striped bass, with pontoon boat tours running into the flooded cypress forest at the lake's upper end.
Hikers and cyclists can access the Palmetto Trail from Poinsett State Park, which winds through the surrounding Manchester State Forest. Lee State Park maintains about 12 miles of equestrian trails plus nature trails through a hardwood forest floodplain, and the Lynches River is suitable for kayaking and canoeing. The Sumter area has a humid subtropical climate with hot summers, short mild winters, and precipitation spread across the year. Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for RV travel, with daytime highs generally in the 60s to low 80s Fahrenheit and lower humidity than midsummer. Wildflowers and dogwoods peak in the High Hills of Santee in early to mid spring.
Summer brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms and daytime highs near or above 90 F, with July and August recording some of the year's heaviest rainfall. Biting insects, mosquitoes, and chiggers are common at Lee State Park and other wooded sites during warmer months, so repellent is useful.
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November and can bring heavy rain and wind inland to the Midlands, so RV travelers should track NOAA advisories in late summer and early fall. Winter camping is viable; the state park campgrounds near Dalzell operate year round, though some facilities and swimming areas close seasonally.

What to expect on arrival

Dense tree canopy can limit satellite reception, and cellular coverage varies by carrier.
RV length limits vary site by site. Poinsett accommodates rigs up to 40 feet on some sites, Lee State Park up to 36 feet, and a few sites at Lee include sewer hookups. Pets are allowed in most outdoor areas on a leash no longer than six feet, but are not permitted in cabins or cabin areas unless the cabin is designated pet-friendly.
