Campgrounds and RV parks near East Camden, SC

Fishing and boating drive most trips in the area. Lake Wateree, a large reservoir on the Wateree River, holds crappie, bream, largemouth bass, striped bass, and catfish, and Lake Wateree State Park provides a public boat ramp, tackle shop, and refueling dock. Kayak rentals and a free tackle loaner program run through SCDNR are also available at the park store. On land, the region offers hiking, biking, and equestrian trails. Sesquicentennial State Park has hiking and biking trails, a small lake with kayak and paddle boat rentals, a splash pad, playgrounds, and a fenced off-leash dog park. Lee State Park draws horse campers with roughly 12 miles of equestrian trails along the Lynches River, artesian wells, and swimming in a spring-fed pond. Historic downtown Camden and Fort Jackson in Columbia are both within easy driving range.

The Midlands has a humid subtropical climate with hot, muggy summers and mild winters. Summer highs commonly reach the upper 80s to low 90s Fahrenheit, with afternoon thunderstorms building on most days from June through August. Shaded state park loops, like the original Riverside loop at Lake Wateree, are noticeably more comfortable than open, sun-exposed sites during this stretch. Spring and fall are the prime RV windows. Temperatures are moderate, insect pressure is lower than midsummer, and reservations are easier to land outside holiday weekends. Fall trends drier by October and November and is generally the most reliable stretch for outdoor time. Winter is mild but variable. Camden sees occasional freezes and rare snowfall, and most public campgrounds in the area, including Lake Wateree, Sesquicentennial, and Lee State Park, remain open year round. Sesquicentennial's Loop 1 closes seasonally while Loop 2 stays open year round, so shoulder-season travelers should check which loops are available before booking.

Lake Wateree State Park has 100 sites on Desportes Island. The original Riverside loop offers 72 shaded sites with water and 20/30-amp electric, while the newer Taylor Creek loop adds 28 sites with full hookups and 20/30/50-amp service but little tree cover. Many sites accommodate rigs up to 40 feet, and hot showers, a dump station, and a tackle shop or camp store are on site. Sesquicentennial State Park sits inside the Columbia metro area and has 84 wooded sites with water and 30-amp electric, a small number of full-hookup sites, and packed-sand pads. Some sites are tight or uneven for larger rigs. Lee State Park, near Bishopville off I-20, is oriented around equestrian camping with family and horse loops; expect mosquitoes, deer flies, and gnats in warmer months. Cell coverage varies, and dense tree cover blocks satellite internet at several sites.
