Campgrounds near Elgin, South Carolina
Elgin sits in Kershaw County in the South Carolina Sandhills, roughly 20 miles northeast of downtown Columbia and about 10 miles west of Camden. The location gives RV travelers quick access to Interstate 20 and U.S. 1, plus a mix of state park campgrounds and full-hookup private RV parks within a short drive.
Columbia / Camden RV Park is the closest developed RV option, useful as a base for exploring both cities. Sesquicentennial State Park, on the Columbia side, holds 1,400 acres of pine forest with 84 sites arranged in two loops and a 30-acre lake. Lake Wateree State Park sits on Desportes Island about a half-hour north and offers 99 single-family sites near the lake, several waterfront, with water and electric on the original 72 sites and full hookups on the Taylor Creek loop.
Big Rig Friendly RV Resort and Barnyard RV Park round out the private options in the area, generally geared toward larger rigs and longer stays. Together these properties cover most trip styles, from an overnight stopover off I-20 to a week-long fishing base on Lake Wateree.
Things to do near Elgin
Fishing and boating dominate the outdoor calendar. Lake Wateree State Park has a tackle shop and park store with refueling dock and public boat ramp, and the lake holds significant populations of crappie, bream, largemouth bass, catfish and striped bass. The park offers the free Tackle Loaner Program coordinated by SCDNR, plus kayak rentals, a playground, a swing set, disc golf goals, a soccer field, and lake-front swings.
Closer to Elgin, Sesquicentennial State Park works well for day trips with kids. The park features a scenic 30-acre lake for fishing and non-motorized boating, miles of hiking trails, a six-mile mountain biking loop, playgrounds, and a two-acre fenced dog park.
Historic downtown Camden, Revolutionary War sites, and the shops and restaurants of Columbia are all within a short drive.

58° / 36°F 87 mmMild days, chilly nights; state parks stay open
Spring and fall are the strongest windows for RV travel around Elgin. Daytime highs are comfortable, humidity is lower than midsummer, and both state parks in the area stay open year-round. At Sesquicentennial, Loop 1 is closed seasonally while Loop 2 is open year round, so shoulder-season travelers should confirm which loop is active when booking.
Summer is hot and humid in the Sandhills, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Lake Wateree draws heavy weekend traffic in June, July, and August, and the lake hosts numerous fishing tournaments throughout the year, which can tighten availability on tournament weekends. Book early for holiday weekends.
Winters are mild by regional standards but can bring cold snaps and stretches of rain. State park campgrounds remain open, and demand is lowest from mid-December through February, making it a practical window for snowbirds passing through on I-20 or for longer stays at private full-hookup parks.

Hurricane season runs June through November but inland Elgin rarely sees direct impacts. Pro tip: avoid driving through downtown Columbia between 4 and 6 pm on weekdays, take the I-77 bypass or I-20 around the city to skip rush-hour congestion in a larger RV.

southcarolinaparks.com/sesquicentennialHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment for your Elgin RV rental happens securely through the RVezy platform, never in cash directly to the host. You'll pay the booking total at reservation (or a portion if a payment plan is offered), and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup. The deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is released back to you after the trip assuming the RV is returned clean, undamaged, and on time. Avoid issues by doing a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, emptying the tanks, and refueling to the level shown at pickup. Pro tip: use a credit card with a high limit so the deposit hold doesn't interfere with other trip spending.
