Forest Acres camping overview
Forest Acres is a residential city surrounded by the Columbia metro area in South Carolina's Sandhills region. RV travelers use it as a base for reaching state parks, the Congaree River corridor, and Fort Jackson, all within a short drive. The area sits near the intersection of I-20, I-77, and I-26, which makes arrival and departure straightforward for larger rigs.
The closest full-service camping is Sesquicentennial State Park, set within 1,400 acres of pine forest with 84 sites arranged in two loops, managed by South Carolina State Parks. Private options in the wider Columbia area include Big Rig Friendly RV Resort, Barnyard RV Park, Woodsmoke Campground, and Broad River Campground. Together these cover state-park camping, big-rig pull-throughs, and family-oriented private parks.
The state park campground is open year-round, with one loop operating seasonally. Reservations are handled through South Carolina State Parks for Sesquicentennial and directly with each private park for the others.
Things to do around Forest Acres
Sesquicentennial State Park anchors outdoor recreation close to Forest Acres. The park features a 30-acre lake (no ramp), playground, splash pad, sand volleyball court, and a dog park, plus hiking and biking trails, fishing, and paddling with kayak and canoe rentals available. A six-mile mountain bike loop runs through the pine forest.
Congaree National Park lies roughly 20 miles south and offers boardwalk trails through old-growth bottomland hardwood forest, plus paddling on Cedar Creek. Closer to downtown, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, the South Carolina State Farmers Market, and the Three Rivers Greenway along the Congaree, Broad, and Saluda rivers give families easy half-day options. Lake Murray sits a short drive west for boating, swimming, and bass fishing.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable windows for camping around Forest Acres. Daytime highs sit in the 70s Fahrenheit, humidity is manageable, and the pine and hardwood canopy at parks like Sesquicentennial provides shade without the extremes of midsummer. Mild evenings make March through May and late September through November popular booking periods.
Summer runs hot and humid. July highs in the Columbia area average near 93 degrees Fahrenheit, and afternoon thunderstorms are frequent from June through August. Full hookups with 50-amp service, needed for continuous air conditioning, are worth prioritizing at private parks in this window. Tropical systems from the Atlantic can occasionally track inland from August through October.
Winter camping is workable but cool. Overnight lows dip into the mid-30s Fahrenheit, hard freezes occur, and one loop at Sesquicentennial operates on a seasonal schedule. Fewer crowds and easier last-minute reservations are the trade-off.

How to book campgrounds near Forest Acres
Sesquicentennial State Park reservations are made through the South Carolina State Parks reservation system online or by phone. Minimum length of stay is two nights, with a maximum 14-day consecutive stay, and campers must leave the park for seven days after reaching the maximum before returning. One-night stays typically require calling the park directly. Sites can be viewed and booked up to 12 months ahead through the state parks portal.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Big Rig Friendly RV Resort, Barnyard RV Park, Woodsmoke Campground, and Broad River Campground all accept online or phone reservations directly. Holiday weekends across the region should be booked several weeks in advance.
What to expect on the ground
Sites at Sesquicentennial State Park sit on packed sand or gravel across two loops. Sites 1-9 include full hookups with sewer, sites 1-29 have 20/30/50-amp electric, and sites 36-84 have 20/30-amp electric only, so verify power needs before booking a larger rig. Modern restroom facilities with hot showers and dump stations are on site.
Big Rig Friendly RV Resort offers long pull-through sites with full hookups aimed at travelers with larger coaches. Barnyard RV Park has level pull-throughs that accommodate long rigs, plus laundry and other amenities. Woodsmoke Campground and Broad River Campground round out the family-oriented private options.
Cell service is generally strong across the metro area. Fire ants, ticks, and mosquitoes are common in warm months, so bring repellent.

Fuel is very manageable here, South Carolina consistently has some of the lowest gas prices in the country. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A coaches 6 to 8 MPG, campervans 16 to 20 MPG, and a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer roughly 10 to 13 MPG. A 200-mile round trip from Forest Acres to Charleston in a Class C should run around $70 to $90 in gas at current SC prices. Stations along Two Notch Road and I-20 are easy to access with big rigs. Private parks like Barnyard RV Park in Lexington and Sandy Run RV Resort usually have more last-minute availability. Congaree National Park's Longleaf Campground is bookable via Recreation.gov up to 6 months ahead. Summer brings strong afternoon thunderstorms, June through August averages highs near 92°F with quick-moving storms, so it's smart to be parked by late afternoon. Hurricane season runs June through November, but Forest Acres sits well inland and rarely sees direct impacts. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a local insider tip for a Forest Acres RV trip?
Here's the move locals love: use Forest Acres as a launch pad for a 'three parks in one week' loop. Start with two nights at Sesquicentennial State Park (5 miles away) for an easy shakedown, then head 45 minutes south to Congaree National Park to camp under the tallest hardwood canopy in eastern North America and paddle Cedar Creek, then finish with two nights lakeside at Lake Wateree State Park, 40 minutes north, for sunset fishing. The whole loop is under 120 miles, perfect for first-timers and dog-friendly the entire way. Pro tip: grab takeout from Rockaway Athletic Club on Rosewood Drive (a Columbia institution) before pulling out of town, classic burgers travel beautifully.
