Campgrounds and RV parks near Gadsden, SC

Gadsden sits in the Congaree River floodplain of central South Carolina, about a half-hour southeast of downtown Columbia. The town is the closest community to Congaree National Park, which protects the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest remaining in the southeastern United States. RV travelers use Gadsden as a base for the national park, the Wateree and Congaree rivers, and the state park system in the surrounding Midlands and Sandhills. RV-friendly options in the area lean heavily on the South Carolina State Parks system, since Congaree's own campgrounds are walk-in and tent-only. Poinsett State Park lies in the High Hills of Santee to the southeast, and Sesquicentennial State Park sits on the north side of Columbia. Private parks fill in the gaps: Sweetwater Lake Campground offers waterfront sites off I-26, while Big Rig Friendly RV Resort and Columbia / Camden RV Park serve travelers who need pull-throughs, full hookups, or larger rigs. Most sites within an hour of Gadsden are wooded, level, and geared to Class A, Class C, and travel-trailer setups.

South Carolina State Parks, including Poinsett and Sesquicentennial, use a single reservation system at reserve.southcarolinaparks.com. Sites and cabins can be booked up to 13 months in advance, and reservations requested less than one day out for camping (or three days for cabins) must be made by calling the park directly. The central reservations line is 866-345-7275. Congaree National Park's Longleaf and Bluff campgrounds are tent-only walk-in sites and are reserved through Recreation.gov. Backcountry permits are free but must be requested at least 72 hours before arrival by emailing the park. Private parks such as Sweetwater Lake Campground, Big Rig Friendly RV Resort, and Columbia / Camden RV Park book directly through the property, by phone or website. For firefly-season weekends in May and any fall-color weekend, reserve as far in advance as the system allows.
