Campgrounds and RV parks near Gaston, SC

Congaree National Park is the region's headline attraction. Visitors come for hiking on the elevated boardwalk through the old-growth floodplain forest, birdwatching, and paddling Cedar Creek and the Congaree River by canoe or kayak. RVers stay in Gaston-area parks because RV and car camping are not permitted within the park. Lake Murray, roughly a half-hour north, draws families for boating, fishing, and swimming, with public ramps and shoreline parks. In Columbia, Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, the South Carolina State Museum, and the Congaree River blueway are all within a short drive. Closer to camp, River Bottom Farms offers fishing in stocked ponds and Sleepy Creek, nature trails leading to the North Edisto River, a swimming pool, and volleyball and horseshoes in a recreation field. Day trips to Poinsett and Sesquicentennial state parks add hiking and freshwater swimming.

Spring and fall are the sweet spot for RV travel in the Midlands: comfortable driving temperatures, lower humidity, and fewer bugs on the trails at Congaree and along the Edisto and Congaree rivers. April highs near 74°F and May highs in the low 80s make the shoulder seasons ideal for extended stays. July sets the stage for the hottest month in Columbia with an average high of 91.6°F, and humidity stays high from June through August. Afternoon thunderstorms are common, and low-lying trails inside Congaree can flood after heavy rain. Mosquitoes and other insects are horrendous in the warmer months at Congaree, which sits in swampy terrain. Atlantic hurricane season, which peaks from August into October, occasionally sends tropical remnants inland to central South Carolina, so watch the forecast when booking late-summer trips. Winters are mild by regional standards. Average high temperatures remain near 52.9°F in January, and snowfall is relatively rare. Most private RV parks near Gaston operate year-round, making winter a reasonable option for snowbirds routing through the Southeast.

Expect classic Midlands terrain: pine flatwoods, sandy soils, and slow-moving blackwater rivers. Sites at the larger private parks near Gaston tend to be level with full hookups, and River Bottom Farms offers 70 large sites with pull-through, full hook-up, 20-amp, 30-amp, and 50-amp options. Cell service is generally reliable across the Columbia metro. Bring insect repellent from spring through fall. Ticks, chiggers, and mosquitoes are active whenever nighttime temperatures stay warm, and they are especially noticeable near Congaree's floodplain. Firewood rules apply on public land: all firewood brought into South Carolina State Parks must be from within the state and from less than 50 miles away. Cedar Creek Resort Clothing Optional is an adult, clothing-optional property; families planning to visit with children should choose one of the other campgrounds listed above.
