Campgrounds and RV parks near Hopkins, SC

Congaree National Park is the headline attraction, with a boardwalk loop through old-growth cypress and tupelo, ranger-led programs, and paddling on Cedar Creek. The park is free to enter and works well as a half-day trip from any nearby campground. Sesquicentennial State Park has hiking and biking trails, a lake for fishing and small paddlecraft, and a splash area that families use in warm months. Downtown Columbia adds the Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, the South Carolina State Museum, and the Three Rivers Greenway along the Congaree, Saluda, and Broad rivers. Lake Murray, west of Columbia, offers boat ramps and swimming beaches within about a 45-minute drive from Hopkins.

Spring and fall are the most comfortable seasons for RV camping around Hopkins. March through May brings warming days, blooming dogwoods, and lower humidity, and October and November deliver crisp mornings and thinner mosquito pressure inside Congaree National Park. Summer is hot and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common from June through August. Campgrounds stay open, but shaded sites and full hookups with air conditioning become important. Congaree's mosquito meter, which the park posts at the visitor center, frequently reads high during this window, so travelers should plan early-morning hikes and pack repellent. Winters are mild by North American standards. Daytime highs typically reach the mid to upper 50s Fahrenheit, hard freezes are brief, and most private RV parks near Hopkins remain open year-round. Snow is rare, but occasional ice events can affect travel on secondary roads. Reservation demand drops sharply between mid-November and February, which makes off-season trips easier to plan on short notice.

Terrain around Hopkins is flat to gently rolling, with sandy soils typical of the Sandhills. Access roads to the main campgrounds are paved and manageable for Class A and larger fifth wheels, though some interior loops at state parks include tight tree canopies that reward slower maneuvering. Cell coverage from major carriers is generally strong across Hopkins, Columbia, and the I-20 corridor, but drops inside portions of Congaree National Park. Groceries, propane, RV supplies, and dump stations are easy to find in Columbia and along US-378 and I-77. Wildlife encounters near Congaree can include deer, wild turkey, feral hogs, and, in warm months, snakes and heavy mosquito activity. Standard bear precautions are not required, but food should still be stored securely at wooded state park sites.
