Campgrounds near Kershaw, South Carolina
Kershaw sits in the South Carolina Midlands, roughly halfway between Columbia and Charlotte, with RV-friendly campgrounds clustered around Lake Wateree to the west and Lancaster County to the north. The area falls under the South Carolina State Park Service, which operates several nearby campgrounds through a single online reservation system.
Lake Wateree State Park is the closest state park option, located on Desportes Island. The original Riverside loop offers 72 paved sites with 20- and 30-amp electrical service and water, and the newer Taylor Creek loop, opened in 2020, adds 28 sites with 50-amp service, water, and sewer. Andrew Jackson State Park sits north of Kershaw near Lancaster, offering a compact 25-site campground beside an 18-acre fishing lake. Lee State Park lies east near Bishopville along the Lynches River, with family and equestrian loops built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.
Private options round out the mix. Columbia / Camden RV Park in Lugoff sits near I-20 with full hookups and pull-through sites suited to big rigs, and The Farm Campground offers another private alternative in the region.
Things to do around Kershaw
Lake Wateree anchors most water-based trips. The reservoir spans roughly 13,700 acres and is known for crappie, bream, largemouth bass, catfish, and striped bass, and Lake Wateree State Park runs a tackle shop, refueling dock, and public boat ramp on Desportes Island. A two-mile nature trail loops through the woods for families staying at the campground.
History is a strong secondary draw. Andrew Jackson State Park houses a museum on the seventh president's boyhood in the Waxhaws backcountry, plus an 18th-century replica schoolhouse and an equestrian statue of Jackson sculpted by Anna Hyatt Huntington. Lee State Park adds functioning artesian wells, a summer swimming area at Artesian Lake, and seven miles of equestrian trails, with riders also permitted on the CCC-era Loop Road.

55° / 34°F 85 mmCool and quiet; state parks stay open year-round
Spring and fall are the strongest windows. March through May brings mild highs, wildflower bloom, and lower humidity, and Andrew Jackson State Park runs its annual birthday celebration for the seventh president each March. October and November stay warm enough for shorts by day and cool enough for campfires at night, and Lake Wateree hosts its Creepy Campout event the last Saturday of October.
Summer is peak booking season. June through August is hot and muggy, with average highs around 90 F and frequent afternoon thunderstorms. Lake Wateree sites go quickly in the summer months, and shaded sites are particularly valuable when temperatures push into the mid-90s. Lee campers report seasonal gnats, deer flies, and horse-related flies during the warm months.
Winter is quiet but usable. Lake Wateree, Andrew Jackson, and Lee State Park campgrounds all stay open year-round, freezing weather is intermittent rather than sustained, and weekday sites at Andrew Jackson are often available on short notice.

Super easy booking and Jeremy was very responsive to all my questions as a first time rv renter. It was all very smooth and super convenient with the delivery option. They were there and set up before we even arrived. The camper was also super nice with a lot of upgraded features. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to others!!

How to book a site
South Carolina State Parks use a single reservation platform for Lake Wateree, Andrew Jackson, and Lee. Campsite reservations may be made up to 13 months in advance, camping requires a minimum two-night stay, and reservations requested less than one day before check-in must be made directly through the park. The toll-free reservation line is 1-866-345-PARK.
Check-in for camping is 2:00 p.m. and check-out is 12:00 p.m. Cancellations made 60 or more days out incur no charge, cancellations 15 to 59 days out incur a per-unit administration charge, cancellations 4 to 14 days out forfeit the first night's fee, and cancellations three days or less out forfeit all funds. Private parks including Columbia / Camden RV Park and The Farm Campground are booked directly with the operator.
What to expect on arrival
Lake Wateree sites are paved and level, each with a water and electric hookup, picnic table, and fire ring. Fifty of the sites can handle RVs up to 40 feet, and the Taylor Creek loop adds 50-amp service and sewer at 28 sites. Andrew Jackson has five paved pull-through sites for RVs up to 36 feet and 20 gravel sites suitable up to 30 feet, with a single tight loop that can be a squeeze for larger rigs.
At Lee State Park the wooded canopy blocks satellite internet and Verizon cellular runs around three bars per camper reports. All South Carolina State Parks require firewood to be sourced from within the state and from less than 50 miles away to prevent pest spread, and pets are allowed on a leash no longer than six feet.
