Campgrounds and RV parks near Lake Murray of Richland, SC

Lake Murray is the main attraction. Visitors launch boats, tow tubes, fish for striped and largemouth bass, and swim from shoreline coves. Dreher Island State Park has hiking trails, fishing access, and a boat ramp along more than 12 miles of shoreline, and boat-based tours run to Bomb Island each summer to view the Purple Martin roost, which peaks from late June through early August. The Lower Saluda River tailrace below the dam offers cool-water paddling and a stocked trout fishery, while Riverbanks Zoo and Garden, the South Carolina State Museum, and the University of South Carolina campus are roughly a 30-minute drive east in Columbia. River-oriented stays near Broad River Campground put paddlers close to gentler moving water, and families often combine a lake day with a downtown Columbia trip for restaurants and museums.

The RV season runs essentially year-round in the South Carolina Midlands, but demand and conditions shift sharply by month. Spring, from March through May, brings mild days, blooming dogwoods, and strong bass fishing. It is also the shoulder season when campgrounds are easiest to book on short notice. Summer is peak season. June through August is hot and humid with frequent afternoon thunderstorms, and lake-adjacent sites at Dreher Island State Park and marina parks like Siesta Cove Marina- RV Park fill months ahead of holiday weekends. Independence Day and Labor Day are the busiest windows, and the Purple Martin roost at Bomb Island draws additional visitors in July. Fall offers a good balance of warm lake temperatures and lower crowds, with pleasant weather stretching into November. Winter is quiet and mild by North American standards, though overnight lows can dip below freezing and some seasonal amenities such as swim areas and rental concessions close between late fall and early spring.

Sites near the lake are generally wooded and level, with a mix of paved and compacted-gravel pads and both full and partial hookups. State park sites at Dreher Island tend to be spacious and shaded compared with typical private-park layouts. Cell service is reliable across most of the shoreline thanks to proximity to Columbia. Summer humidity is significant, so awnings, screen rooms, and ample fresh-water capacity make a difference. Biting insects peak from late spring through early fall, so bring repellent and consider sites with breeze off the water. Venomous snakes including copperheads live in the wooded areas around the lake, and alligators have been documented in the broader Midlands, though they are uncommon at Lake Murray. Keep pets leashed and food stored. Thunderstorms can arrive quickly on summer afternoons, so monitor forecasts before extended time on the water.
